A head on crash that killed two people and left two others hurt, shut down a major Lexington road for hours during rush hour on Wednesday. The wreck happened Wednesday afternoon on Versailles Road near Terrace View Drive.
Now as police are trying to figure out what caused this wreck and if alcohol was involved, thoughts are with the many victims.
“They had to use the jaws of life, it’s destroyed beyond recognition,” said Aaron Sutherland when looking at the cars left at the scene.

“The front tire and the back tire were about two feet apart, so it was pretty disturbing,” added Kevin Dunaway. He lives nearby and heard the wreck. Both the terrible sight, and even worse sound are what witnesses of this crash can’t shake.
“I heard the screeching of the brakes. I heard them try to brake, but then I heard the impact,” said Ashley Jones. She was walking down the sidewalk with her kids when suddenly she heard, “metal, like an explosion, it was really loud.”
The coroner said the two cars were heading in opposite directions at around 3:15 p.m. when somehow the two hit head on. As quick as the cars collided and crumbled, rescue crews were cutting metal to get to the victims.
“You could tell it was a pretty tragic accident,” said Dunaway.
A woman was the only person in the gray car. She was cut from the wreck and taken to University of Kentucky Hospital. The coroner said three men were in the dark blue car, but only one lived. That man was also taken to UK Hospital. As of Wednesday night, both the man and the woman’s conditions were unknown, however friends of the woman said she would be alright.
Investigators spent about three hours on scene and diverted traffic away from the area. The coroner said alcohol may be a factor in the cause of the crash.
“The part that’s upsetting, is when we find alcohol containers in the vehicle where the death has occurred,” said Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn.
The coroner said toxicology tests will be performed, however whatever the outcome, hearts go out to these families.
“You’re in my thoughts and prayers,” said Dunaway.
The coroner has not released the names of the two men who passed away, but said both were young.
