Fraud Investigation Woman Claims to be With Hope Center to Defraud People

Directors at the Hope Center in Lexington said that they were upset to hear someone was going door-to-door claiming to be with their organization and soliciting money. They do not collect donations that way.

Hope Center Director of Development Carrie Thayer said that they are thankful for the community’s constant support.

“We had a couple of supporters contact us and let us know that there was a woman soliciting donations in their neighborhood for the Hope Center,” said Thayer.

The reports came out of the Gardens of Hartland neighborhood off of Tates Creek Road.

Thayer told LEX 18 that reports claim a woman knocked on doors Tuesday night saying she was raising money for the Hope Center and asked for $50 donations.

“We might show up in your mailbox, but non-profits are not going to go door-to-door asking for donations,” said Thayer.

The Better Business Bureau offers the following tips if someone comes to your door:

  • Ask for ID, organization name, and location
  • Never give cash
  • Make checks to the organization, not the seller.
  • Beware of “pitty pleas” or high pressure.
  • Don’t let strangers into your home.

“Definitely try to get what information you can, maybe a name, and contact the better business bureau and report it,” said Thayer.

The best way to donate to the Hope Center is to visit their website or look out for information in the mail. You can also go directly to the non-profit to donate.
