Wrongful Death Clark County Man Indicted in Fatal Crash

A Clark County man has been indicted in a fiery crash that killed two women last June.

James Pelfrey, 84,  was arrested Thursday for his role in the crash that resulted in the deaths of Sarah Helfrich and Juanetta Mitchell.

Pelfrey told police he was blinded by headlights and didn’t see the women’s car stopped in front of them. Pelfrey crashed into the car killing the two women.

A lawsuit was filed against Pelfrey by Helfrich’s husband, claiming that he acted “wantonly and negligently.”

From jail, Pelfrey told LEX 18’s Kelsey Borza that he simply didn’t see the car and calls the crash “a terrible accident.”

“I pray every night for the family and I’m sorry it happened, but I just didn’t know. I couldn’t see… couldn’t see nothing after he blinded me,” he said.

Pelfrey was indicted by a Clark County grand jury on two counts of manslaughter and one count of assault for injury to another passenger in the vehicle.
