Missing Person More Info on Man Found Safe After 18 Yrs

CLARISSA, Minn. (AP) — In 2006, an 18-year-old Minnesota man legally changed his name to Michael Jeff Landers. Six years later, authorities determined Landers was really the Indiana child who had been abducted by his paternal grandparents in 1994.

Richard Wayne Landers Jr., was reportedly abducted when he was 5 years old. The 24-year-old Michael Landers now lives in the small central Minnesota town of Browerville, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Sheriff Peter Mikkelson said the investigation is ongoing and the case will be forwarded to federal authorities for possible charges.

It’s unclear what Landers knew about his history, but authorities said he had lived with his grandparents since birth.

According to court records, Landers applied for the name change himself in November 2006, just a couple weeks after he turned 18. The application doesn’t say why he requested the change, and it wasn’t immediately clear how long he had used the name Michael.

A home phone number for Landers could not be found. Telephone and social networking messages left with him and his wife were not immediately returned.

In July 1994, after a custody dispute between Landers’ mother and the grandparents, the grandparents fled from Wolcottville, Ind., about 50 miles southeast of South Bend.

“I’m not sure that they (the grandparents) ever had legal custody,” said John R. Russell, who spent several months investigating the disappearance with the LaGrange

(Ind.) County Sheriff’s Department.

The mother and stepfather were unemployed and lived in a car, Russell recalled.

“These people (the grandparents) were nice people. It was wrong for them to do it, but I can understand why,” he said. “But I also didn’t think the child would be in any danger at all with them.”

Landers’ stepfather, Richard Harter, did not respond to phone calls Friday. A phone number for Landers’ mother, Lisa Harter, could not be located. Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Ron Galaviz said it appears Landers’ father was never in the picture.

Indiana attorney Richard Muntz has worked with Lisa Harter in her 19-year search and told the Star Tribune that child welfare services stepped in because she has some developmental disabilities and the grandparents had temporary custody.

Muntz said after a judge granted Harter custody for a trial period, the grandparents took $5,000 out of a home equity line and left town.

The grandparents were charged with misdemeanor interference with custody, which was bumped up to a felony in 1999. But the charge was dismissed in 2008 after the case went cold.

Investigators reopened the case in September when Richard Harter turned over Landers’ Social Security card to an Indiana State Police detective. That turned up a man with the same Social Security number and birthday with an address in Long Prairie, about 100 miles northwest of Minneapolis.

Indiana State Police then contacted Minnesota law enforcement agencies, which began investigating along with the FBI and the Social Security Administration.

Minnesota officials say the grandparents — now living in Browerville under the assumed names Raymond Michael Iddings and Susan Kay Iddings — verified Landers’ identity. They were known as Richard E. and Ruth A. Landers at the time of the abduction.

A woman who answered a phone number associated with the Iddingses declined a request for an interview. A couple who answered the door at their home declined to identify themselves and also refused an interview.

A spokeswoman with the U.S. Attorney’s office in Minnesota, Jeanne Cooney, said charges in such a case could be related to non-custodial kidnapping, whether the child was exploited, abused, trafficked or being used to obtain benefits.

Michael Landers and his wife, who police say are expecting a child, share a plot of land with his grandparents a few miles outside of Browerville. There are two houses and two deteriorating barns on the property, and a few toys were scattered in front of one of the houses Friday. Ten cars sat in the shared driveway.

Landers works at an auto parts store in Long Prairie, but wasn’t at the store Friday and an employee declined an interview.

Raymond Iddings has worked since 1999 as a herdsman at Twin Eagle Dairy in nearby Clarissa, where owner Patrick Lunemann described him as a “dedicated, faithful” employee. Lunemann said he was in shock when he read a story about the case.

He said Iddings plays guitar at his church, and recalled a day last summer when the couple brought their instruments to play for dairy workers. He said he knew Michael slightly, saying he stopped on occasion — perhaps to drop off Iddings’ lunch if he had forgotten it.

“(Landers) works at an auto parts place. That fits him perfectly, because Ray is kind of a motorhead and Michael is the same way,” Lunemann said.

The town buzzed with the news, though. Rich Wall, a retired jeweler, said some residents speculated that some people knew of Landers’ history but kept quiet. He said it was the most notable news since a grisly triple homicide there in 2003.

“My grandson called last night and said, ‘Long Prairie made the news again,’ ” Wall said.

Missing Person Reward in Redwine Case Increased to $30,450

The reward for information that solves the disappearance of Dylan Redwine, 13, who dropped out of sight Nov. 19 while visiting his father in Vallecito, was increased Wednesday to $30,450.

“There was a single, $10,000 private donation out of Denver,” said Denise Hess, an Ignacio resident and family friend who has led the community effort to find Dylan.

“When I deposited the money today, I learned that the bank had received $450 for the account,” Hess said.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The new contributions boost the reward from $20,000, a level reached Dec. 26.

Online auctions, donations and fundraisers swell the reward. Durango-La Plata Crime Stoppers, which administers the reward money, contributed $1,000. The rest has been raised by the committee.

A separate fund at Wells Fargo Bank contains about $2,000 from donations and the sale of bracelets and ribbons, which aim to keep Dylan’s case in the public eye.

Dylan arrived the evening of Nov. 18 in Durango from Colorado Springs on a court-ordered visit with his father, Mark Redwine. Redwine and Dylan’s mother, Elaine Redwine, divorced in 2007.

Dylan, who went to school in Bayfield until his mother moved to Colorado Springs in summer 2012, was scheduled to meet former schoolmates early the next day. He didn’t show.

Mark Redwine told investigators that Dylan was sleeping when he left the house about 7:30 a.m. Nov. 19 to run errands. Dylan was not home when he returned, Redwine said.

La Plata County Sheriff’s investigators, supported by the FBI and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, conducted land searches – including with dogs – and scanned Vallecito Reservoir with sonar looking for leads. They also went door to door looking for someone who might have a tip.

The case attracted national attention, including two segments on the Headline News show of Nancy Grace and the interview of Elaine Redwine on “Good Morning America.”

Hess organized search parties that numbered a couple of hundred at one time.

No solid leads apparently have been found. Leads have fallen from several dozen a day to an average of two to three a day, a La Plata County Sheriff’s Office news release said Saturday.

Hess said every bit of money received by the Dylan Redwine Fund has gone to increase the reward. The reward could go for a lead resulting in an arrest or information leading to Dylan’s whereabouts.

Missing Person PI Received Anonymous Letter in 2009 Case

Investigators in Pennsylvania are trying to determine whether an anonymous letter claiming to have information about a woman who disappeared three years ago is a hoax or a vital clue regarding her whereabouts.

Toni Lee Sharpless vanished around 4 a.m. on Aug. 23, 2009, after driving away from the Philadelphia home of former 76er Willie Green after a night of drinking. A friend in the car with Sharpless was kicked out along the way, and police have had almost no clues as to what happened to Sharpless, a nurse and mother, except that her license plate was last electronically recorded in nearby Camden, N.J. Her black Pontiac Grand Prix has never been seen since.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

But an anonymous letter sent to the private detective working on Sharpless’ case late last month claims the missing woman, who would now be 33, was killed after a fight with a Camden police officer, the Philadelphia Daily News reported.

“What happened to (Toni), I don’t really know. All I know is she had a run-in with the police and I was paid much-needed cash to get the car to a shop in Boston,” the letter, written on a piece of yellow legal paper, reads.

The writer claims to have helped ditch Sharpless’ car in Boston in 2009 for about $5,000 at the request of a friend.

“I came back to Camden a day later and (the friend) told me that the car was not stolen, but missing. He said a friend of his, a cop in Camden, got into a fight with a girl, she died and he needed to get the car out of Jersey,” the letter reads.

The vehicle identification number (VIN) the writer included for the Grand Prix was accurate, private detective Eileen Law told the newspaper.

Law said there are some holes in the author’s account, but admits it was the first clue in the cold case in some time.

The writer also said the friend asking for help disposing of Lawless’ car wanted to know if he or she knew anyone looking for a “paper-trip,” jargon meaning a new identity, by using Sharpless’ Social Security card.

The writer claims to have driven Sharpless’ car to an auto-body shop outside of Boston, removing the license plate and recording the VIN.

After her disappearance, Sharpless’ cell phone was never used again and her bank account never accessed.

Police in Sharpless’ hometown of Chesco have been contacted by the private detective about the letter but Camden police said they were unaware of the possible clue.

Police have maintained that Willie Green, who now plays for the Los Angeles Clippers, has always cooperated with the investigation. Crystal Johns, who was the last person to see Sharpless before the nurse kicked her out of the car, passed a polygraph.

Pedophile Tracking Trial Set for MS Child Sex Trafficking Case

JACKSON, Miss. —

A Feb. 19 trial date has been set for two men charged with sex trafficking related to a video that authorities say shows them having sex with a girl who is 3 or 4 years old.

Marco Laquin Rogers and Jeremy Atral Hodges are charged in U.S. District Court in Jackson on one count each of child sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion and one count each of selling or buying of children.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

They have pleaded not guilty.

Court records say both men are from Mississippi, but Rogers was living in Atlanta and Hodges in Cambridge, Mass.

Court records say the investigation began Sept. 6 in Cambridge, Mass., after Hodges asked another man there if he liked young girls and showed him explicit images of children on his cellphone.

Identity Theft Victims’ Tax Refund May Take Longer

This does not automatically apply to South Carolina Residents impacted by the Cyber Hacking, but If you’re a proven victim of identity theft, expect a long wait for your tax refund.

ID theft victims were told to wait 180 days — or nearly six months — for their returns to be processed last year.

An IRS watchdog group says there could be similar or even longer delays this year.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

According to the Taxpayer Advocate Service, the IRS waits to give refunds until it conducts a load of internal paperwork, even if it has already determined that the identify theft victim is owed a refund.

In an annual report to Congress, the TAS recommends faster refund access and setting up a single point of contact for victims.

The IRS says its current setup is effective and it has improved procedures for stopping identity theft.

Wrongful Death Lexington Man Shot, High School Class Raises Money

It’s been nearly a week since Joe Randolph was shot and killed at his Lexington home, and police are still looking for the shooter. Meanwhile, Randolph’s classmates from 30 years ago are doing their part to help investigators. They’ve raised money for a reward.

In 1983, Joe Randolph was known in high school as “the rebel.”

“What we remember of Joe is just a happy go lucky person,” says Toni Spivey, his classmate.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Thirty years later, those same classmates from the black and white yearbook photos are wondering: who killed their dear friend?

“I was very privileged to have ever known him. And I loved him. And I miss him,” says another classmate.

January 7, the 48 year-old was shot in the head at his Lexington home on Simpson avenue. He died at UK Hospital. Police haven’t arrested anyone. Randolph’s Nicholas County High School class wanted to do something, so they started a fund, hoping reward money will convince someone to tell police what they know, and help solve the case.

“We all agree, we couldn’t think of any better way than to put our money into that, and our efforts as well,” Spivey says.

When Randolph’s family heard about the plan, to say they were appreciative is an understatement.

“I just… I just hope somebody is out there listening, who knows something, because man, this is rough,” says Joe’s brother, Jeff Randolph, through tears.

They pray they don’t have to go another week not knowing what happened to Joe.

“I just want it to be over with,” he says.

So far, the class has raised 500 dollars. You can donate to the Joe Randolph memorial fund at any Whittaker Bank. If you have any information about his murder, call Lexington Police.

Pedophile Tracking Child Sex Offender Arrested for Child Porn in NM

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A convicted child molester from Massachusetts has now been arrested for child porn in New Mexico but that may not be the end of the case after he told detectives he’s committed more crimes and has been hanging around local theaters.

John Vandermeer is a registered sex offender in New Mexico for a sex crime he committed against a young boy in Massachusetts in the late 1980s. In December, state police arrested him again for child porn.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

However, in a criminal complaint it appears Vandermeer may have been trying to hide. His internet service was listed under a John Vanderneer, with a “N” instead of “M”. KRQE News 13 learned it’s not the first time he’s made slight changes to his name.

In a criminal complaint, Vandermeer told detectives who questioned him arrested for child porn arrest that “there were crimes in New Mexico that he hasn’t been charged for.” He also said, “he had a preference for pre-pubescent boys and girls” and “he participated in productions in which children were present.”

KRQE learned Vandermeer has been active in amateur theater groups across Albuquerque to include, Albuquerque Little Theater, The Adobe Theater and The Vortex Theatre. Vandermeer even joined the Albuquerque Theatre Guild, an organization of about 150 people.

Only Albuquerque Little Theater confirmed to us that it knew Vandermeer was a convicted child rapist. The Adobe Theater and Albuquerque Theatre Guild said they had no idea until we told them.

Vandermeer may have made it hard for them to find out.

Albuquerque Little Theater sent us a statement and listed his name as “Van der Meer.” On the Albuquerque Theatre Guild website his last name is again split into three.

He may have been doing that because if you search the state sex offender registry, there’s no offender listed under those slightly changed names.

However, if you search the correct last name you will find Vandermeer.

Both the Albuquerque Little Theater and Adobe Theater put on shows that attract young actors and young audiences.

The Albuquerque Little Theater sent a statement saying: “John Van der Meer was carefully scheduled to work only with adult staff and volunteers, during hours when there were no children on the premises.”

A board member with the Adobe Theater said he did participate in productions but she did not know if children were involved. She also said she didn’t know about Vandermeer’s past until now.

Vandermeer will be held in federal custody until his trial which hasn’t been scheduled yet.
