Wrongful Death Body Identified as Colorado Man’s Mom

A Colorado man thought to missing earlier in the week is facing a first degree murder charge after the dismembered body found in his vehicle was positively identified as his mother.

Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson told ABCNews.com that the Arapahoe County coroner confirmed on Thursday that the dismembered body found in the back of 24-year-old Ari Misha Liggett’s gold Honda CR-V was his mother, Beverly Liggett, 56, of Centennial, Colo.

The mother and son had been reported missing from their home in Centennial on Monday night. While credit card records led authorities to believe the two had traveled to the western slope of Colorado Tuesday morning, sheriff’s deputies observed Liggett’s SUV driving near the family’s home early Wednesday morning.

While being pursued by police, Ari Liggett was arrested after he crashed his car at around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, Robinson said. Authorities found a deceased woman’s body in his vehicle, which has since been identified as his mother, Beverly.

Liggett is currently being held in Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility without bond.

To complicate the investigation, Robinson said the family’s relatives called the sheriff’s office to notify them about the presence of a suspicious liquid found in the home on Tuesday.

“A preliminary test of that liquid showed a positive for potassium cyanide,” said Robinson. “It changed our perspective dramatically.”

Robinson said that the chemical was lethal when ingested in solid or liquid form, and that vapors could be harmful in a closed environment.

“A detailed missing person’s investigation became a complex hazardous material investigation combined with a very complex homicide,” Robinson said.

According to ABC affiliate KMGH, Liggett was involved with the March 2010 evacuation of a Boulder, Colo. homeless shelter after he told police he had stored hazardous chemicals a suitcase in the facility.

Robinson said a hazmat team went to the Liggett home on Thursday to render the toxic materials safe so that investigators could enter. The chemicals were not a threat to other homes in the neighborhood, he said.

Robinson said he could not discuss what authorities found inside the home, as the details were part of an ongoing investigation.

Liggett is due back in court on October 23.

Fraud Investigation Johnson City, TN Woman Charged with Theft

Police have charged a Johnson City woman with theft related to training people to serve alcoholic beverages, and are asking anyone who may have been victimized to call them.

Johnson City police charged Maria R. Tressler, 34, 111 Arrowhead Drive, with one count of theft of property over $500 after a joint investigation with Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission into fraud.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

According to a news release, Tressler provided server training classes at restaurants in Johnson City. These classes were supposed to meet the minimum training requirements for servers to be certified to serve liquor by the drink.

“The investigation showed that Tressler failed to submit training records, license applications, and application fees to the State of Tennessee. As a result, victims were unable to work and had to incur additional training and certification costs,” according to the news release.

Police said so far 10 people have reported paying Tressler for training but were unable to obtain a server permit.

Tressler was being held on $5,000 bond in the Washington County Detention Center.

She was scheduled to appear in Sessions Court Monday.

Police have asked anyone who thinks they also may be a victim to contact the Johnson City Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 423-434-6166.

Fraud Investigation St. Louis Attorney Indicted

ST. LOUIS • A local attorney was charged in federal court here Thursday with mail fraud for allegedly keeping insurance money that was owed to his clients.

According to the three-count indictment, Stephen B. Evans, 45, of St. Louis, illegally collected between $70,000 and $120,000 from 2007 to 2012 that had been awarded by insurance companies to his clients on lawsuits, instead of just taking the contingent fee he was owed.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

At least two of the charges appear to stem from an investigation by the Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel, which this year recommended Evans license be suspended based on fraud complaints involving six clients. The state Supreme Court ordered the suspension March 9 and it remains in effect.

Evans was also admonished by the OCDC for failing to comply with its requests for information related to the investigation.

Evans has been licensed in Missouri since 1993, according to court records.

Each count of mail fraud carries up to a 20 year prison sentence.

Missing Person Sharon Sons’ Family Seeking Answers for 19 yrs

Nineteen years ago, a Lexington woman disappeared. A missing persons report for Sharon Sons was filed, police investigated, but the case went cold.

Now her family is speaking to LEX 18, and despite the passage of nearly 20 years, they still hope someone who knows something will call police.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Sharon’s sister tells us Sharon would never just up and leave. She was 28 at the time, had an 11 year old son, and was close with her family. Sharon’s mother thinks her daughter was murdered, and she says detectives think so too. Now they just need help solving the case.

Sharon was last seen October 20,1993.

“Someone has just ripped her away from us, and it’s just not fair,” says her older sister, Debbie Collins.

Sharon’s boyfriend at the time, Willie King, told her family Sharon decided to go for a walk to a nearby laundromat. She was never heard from again.

“Well, that’s what he told us,” says Sarah Sons, Sharon’s mom. She says she always wondered if King was involved in her daughter’s disappearance.

“When Willie King called me and told me he had filed a missing persons report, I knew right then… no this is not like her,” Collins says. She tells LEX 18 when it happened, police questioned, then cleared King.

Fall turned to winter, and detectives followed more leads. Nothing panned out. Nineteen Octobers have passed. Still no answers.

“We have missed 20 years of her life. Holidays, birthdays, special occasions, weddings, babies being born. They just took it right away from us,” says Collins.

Sharon’s mom holds onto her daughter’s “missing” poster. It’s the same poster she hung on trees nearly two decades ago. She’s hoping maybe this time someone will see it and call police.

“We want closure. Somebody thinks they’re getting away with something here. But the day will come when there’s a higher power they’re going to have to answer to. And they’re not going to get by with lying to them,” she says.

Sharon Sons would be 47 today. If you have any information about her, call Lexington police.

Identity Theft Attempt Fails at Seattle Area Bank

DES MOINES, Wash. — A man is in hot water for allegedly dressing up in a ridiculous costume in an attempt to impersonate another man and steal his debit card.

According to court documents, Joshua K. Pinney, 30, walked into the Bank of America branch in Des Moines, Wash. on June 26 dressed in the outfit pictured here. The bank’s branch manager immediately determined the costume was fake and called police.

Prosecutors say Pinney presented the identification of an Oregon man to the bank manager and asked for a new debit card. The actual man on the ID was a client at the bank whose car had recently been stolen and his identification was missing. The victim had flagged his account to prevent anyone from using it.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Pinney told the branch manager that he was on a business trip in Washington and needed a new debit card, according to the police report. He also asked the branch manager if he could sit down and requested a glass of water, claiming he was in pain from a recent accident.

Police arrived at the bank 12 minutes later and immediately identified Pinney by his obviously fake bandages and facial hair.

When confronted by police, Pinney remained serious and said he was at the bank to replace his debit card, documents said.

The police officer looked at the Oregon ID that Pinney had given the bank manager and asked the man if he was seriously trying to pass as the man in the picture. Court documents report Pinney hung his head and said “I know.”

The officer arrested Pinney and found his own ID card as well as the identity theft victim’s Social Security card in his wallet.

Pinney admitted to police that his bandages were not real and that he had not been in an accident. He said the entire scheme was his girlfriend’s idea and that she had been waiting outside for him when he entered the bank. Pinney claimed he met his girlfriend while on work release from prison last year and told police she was a “computer whiz” and could open bank accounts online.

Pinney also said he obtained the fake ID and Social Security card from his brother’s friend, who had stolen them from a car in Tacoma, according to police.

Pinney has been charged with identity theft in the second degree. He was scheduled to make a court appearance Thursday but failed to appear.

Missing Person Viola Reynolds of Putnam County, GA

Viola Reynolds is looking for her son, Jason Paul Lowrey, 31, who has been missing from the Madison area since Sunday, Oct. 7.

According to Reynolds, he was last seen at a residence on Copelan Road that same night.

“He was riding with someone who had picked him up, and I am hoping that whoever that person is, or someone who saw them, will speak up,” Reynolds said Tuesday when she came into The Messenger office.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

With Lowrey missing for more than a week, Reynolds is worried that something is going to – or has – happened.

“This is not like him, to go this long without contacting me,” she said. “He is out there wandering around, lost, and I need all the help I can get.”

Reynolds said her son is off his medications for schizophrenia, a recently diagnosed mental disorder that has plagued him since 2005. The condition he suffers from sometimes makes him believe he can live without the medications, she said.

When he left his residence at 2750 Eatonton Road in Madison Oct. 7, Lowrey was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans and carrying a red, white and black backpack. He has short hair and a full beard he has been keeping cropped short to his face, Reynolds said. Lowrey is more than 6 feet tall and weighs around 190 pounds.

Lowrey can be identified by three tattoos on his arms. The word “Kylah” is tattooed on his right hand; “Paxton” is tattooed on his left hand; and “WWJD” is tattooed on his right forearm.

Reynolds said her son was spotted by law enforcement that night, walking along state Route 83 and was taken to a relative’s house in Social Circle when Lowrey told officials it was his father’s house.

The woman there told the law enforcement officer Lowrey’s mother was staying at a campground, and he took Lowrey to the campground, dropping him off at the front.

“But, instead of coming inside to look for me, he started walking down Highway 441 again,” she said.

That is when Reynolds believes someone picked him up, stopping by her friend’s house on Copelan Road.

Reynolds said her friend said Lowrey was in a vehicle with someone, but could not make out whether the vehicle was a car or a truck.

“They didn’t pull all the way into the driveway, so he couldn’t see what kind of vehicle it was,” she said. “I just am hoping whoever was driving will call and let me know where they dropped him off or where they took him.”

Reynolds has talked to the Putnam and Baldwin sheriffs’ offices about Lowrey’s disappearance and posted flyers in the community.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Morgan County criminal investigation division at 706-342-1507 or the tip line at 706-342-1000 or send an email to morgancountyinfo@yahoo.com.

Fraud Investigation Ownner of South Seattle Construction Company

A King County jury has found the former owner of a South Seattle construction company guilty of securities fraud for deceiving investors out of their money.

Laurence Anthone, who owned MA Quik Framing, was tried in Superior Court on 15 criminal counts of theft and securities fraud. On Wednesday, the jury found him guilty of eight counts of securities fraud, according to Senior Deputy Prosecutor Scott Peterson.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Anthone, 49, has been facing criminal charges since August 2008. He was initially charged with 19 counts, a combination of theft and securities fraud, but several charges were dismissed over the years.

Prosecutors said the case took more than four years to go to trial because new lawyers for both sides were appointed and because the evidence was extremely complicated.

According to court documents, Anthone led investors in 2003 and 2005 to believe he owned or was purchasing several parcels of property in Seattle’s Central District as well as Skyway and Renton and would be building homes, commercial developments, or developed lots of land.

“No houses were ever built, no lots … nothing. He complained that the King County permitting folks were interfering,” Peterson said.

Peterson said that only a few people received a little money back from him, the rest were offered “excuses” when they asked for a refund. When victims became demanding, Anthone would avoid them, Peterson added.

Prosecutors say Anthone has long been under investigation by the Securities Division of the state’s Department of Financial Institution. Michelle Mack, an investigator for the state, told prosecutors that between January 2003 and November 2005, Anthone collected $1.1 million from investors. Mack investigated Anthone’s seven bank accounts, according to King County prosecutors.

Senior Deputy Prosecutor Scott Peterson said that of the $1.1 million, more than $400,000 was withdrawn from banks in cash. It’s unclear what that money was spent on, he added.

Several of the victims sued Anthone in civil court.

Anthone faces up to 3 1/2 years in prison, said Dan Donohoe, spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 7.

Wrongful Death Bill Cox of Corbin, KY Indicted

A grand jury has indicted a Corbin man on a murder charge in connection with the August shooting death of his daughter’s boyfriend.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Police say Bill Cox, 55, shot Ryan Abner, 21, to death in the middle of a Corbin street. The grand jury also indicted Cox on wanton endangerment charges for firing the gun into a vehicle. His daughter and her baby were passengers in the car.

A man claiming to be Cox called 911 after the shooting. During the call, he says Abner “beat on” his daughter.

“I tell you what, I’m gonna to go to prison over this, but it’s worth it.”
