Arson Investigation San Jose Woman Arrested Setting Fire

SAN JOSE, Calif. —

San Jose firefighters arrested a woman Saturday night who was caught setting a fire in the same area where more than 10 fires have been deliberately set over the last three weeks.

The fires were all set on Delna Manor Lane and most occurred in dumpsters, or to shrubs and trees.

Firefighters were very concerned they could catch a home on fire because the fires were within feet of houses.

Fire investigators said they spotted a 56-year-old woman lighting a fire in a garbage can while they were staking out the area,

The woman was arrested.

Investigators were looking into whether she was responsible for all the fires in the Delna Manor area that have been reported since Sept. 26.

One of the most recent fires was a one-alarm that burned outside 834 Delna Manor Lane, a residential street near South Bascom Avenue and Downing Avenue, on Oct. 8, San Jose Fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez said.

“The majority seem to be happening after dark,” Gutierrez said.

She said the fires have burned in back or side alleys of large, multi-tenant residential buildings, some near Dumpsters, brush or trees.

So far, Gutierrez said, none of the fires have spread to the buildings, but fire investigators were still concerned.

“We are taking this seriously because there is a high potential for property loss and loss of life,” Gutierrez said.

Anyone with information about the fires was asked to call the San Jose Fire Department’s arson tip hotline at (408) 272-7766.

Drug Dog Sweep Centennial Lakes, Minn

During traffic stops police often find things hidden in the glove compartment or under the seats, but don’t usually come across a woman who hides drugs in her privates.

Nicole Lynn Denzer, 23, of Circle Pines, Minn., was pulled over for driving erratically on Oct. 2 in Centennial Lakes, Minn., and arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

But after Denzer was already booked and placed in a cell she attracted the attention of the canine detection unit during a routine cell inspection, according to KSTP.com

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

“The dog began sniffing Denzer’s crotch, after which Denzer admitted she had drugs in her vagina,” according to WND.com.

After a strip search authorities found a “clear plastic bag with 17 grams of meth and a clear pipe,” according to the criminal complaint.

Denzer was charged with second-degree controlled substance possession and an additional charge of introducing drug contraband into jail. She faces up to 25 years and a $500K fine.

Wrongful Death Man Charged with 2nd Degree Murder in Dover, NH

A Dover, N.H., martial arts instructor has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the disappearance of missing University of New Hampshire student Elizabeth Marriott, a 2011 Westboro High School graduate.

Seth Mazzaglia, 29, is scheduled to be arraigned in Dover on Monday in connection with Ms. Marriott’s death.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Authorities are still looking for Ms. Marriott’s body, according to Susan Morrell, senior assistant New Hampshire attorney general. Her car, a tan 2001 Mazda Tribute, has been found in a UNH parking lot in Durham.

A vigil for Ms. Marriott, 19, was scheduled for tonight at Bay State Commons Park Pavilion in downtown Westboro.

Authorities would not say whether Mr. Mazzaglia had confessed or reveal any other specifics of the case.

Ms. Marriott’s aunt, Rebecca L. Tyning, said this afternoon that Mr. Mazzaglia and Ms. Marriott met in July when both were working at a Target store in Greenland, N.H.

According to Seth J. Mazzaglia’s website, he lives at 1 Mill St., Dover. Authorities searched an apartment building on Mill Street overnight.

In a statement, Ms. Marriott’s family asked for privacy but thanked friends, the University of New Hampshire, local, state and national law enforcement authorities.

“This is the worst parents’ nightmare, a missing child and with an unfavorable outcome,” the family said. “Please pray for the dedicated rescue professionals who continue to look for Lizzi. We need them to find her and bring her home.”

Mr. Mazzaglia’s website says he is an experienced actor, writer and fight choreographer who has worked in professional and community theaters around southern New Hampshire for years. He had hoped to break into film.

Ms. Marriott was a musician in high school and won a music scholarship. She was majoring in marine biology.

According to Mr. Mazzaglia’s website, he most recently played Capt. Keller in Garrison Player’s “The Miracle Worker.” His Facebook page lists American sign language as well as English under languages he speaks.

The website says he is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. He has taught martial arts since 2004.

Ms. Marriott has been missing since Tuesday night, when she attended a class at the university and then made plans to visit friends in Dover.

Family members and friends blanketed the Dover area Friday with colored fliers bearing two photos of her and the statement that her cellphone was last used in Dover at 10:11 p.m. Tuesday. Her family had offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to her safe return.

This afternoon, the Marriott family was sequestered in their Westboro home. Police have blocked access to the private road where they live. An assistant N.H. attorney general was in town today.

A New Hampshire newspaper, Foster’s Daily Democrat, reported today that authorities told Ms. Marriott’s family to discontinue their search for her. The family had been working with a nonprofit group that helps the families of missing people map out potential places they could have traveled.

Last night, an island in Portsmouth was closed in search of a body, but authorities wouldn’t say whether the search was related to Ms. Marriott’s disappearance.

Yesterday, Lizzi Marriott’s grandmother Susan Marriott was tending the phone at the Chester home where her granddaughter lives while other family members were out handing out fliers and searching for her.

Ms. Marriott had lived with an aunt in Chester, N.H., while commuting to the Durham campus.

Her grandmother said the FBI and other investigators had been at the house for much of the day yesterday interviewing family members.

“She is a good student, and she’s hard-working,” her grandmother said. “She is a person that doesn’t have a multitude of friends, but she has good friends – a small group of good friends.”

Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young asked that anyone who has information that could help in the case to call state police at (603) 271-3636.

A family friend, Dawn Downey of Westboro, described Marriott as an attractive young woman who was active in chorus in high school and was prom queen during her junior year. Marriott was helping to put herself through college by working at Target.

“She was just a good girl. That’s probably what got her in trouble. She was too trusting and she was beautiful. Those two things will kill you,” Mrs. Downey said.

Downey’s daughter Nicole, who was Ms. Marriott’s best friend, described Ms. Marriott as a “fun-loving and goofy” young woman who got along easily with others and had a wide circle of friends. She also was a good student who loved animals and science and volunteered at the New England Aquarium in Boston, Nicole Downey said.

“It was a shock to me when I found out she was missing. That was not like her at all,” she said. “She was just all around a great person. I don’t know why anyone would want to hurt her.”

The search is getting much attention on Twitter, where people are using the hashtag #FindLizzi. Earlier, they were using the hashtag of #FindLizzie. A Facebook page has also been set up.

UNH statement on death of Elizabeth ‘Lizzi’ Marriott

University officials were deeply saddened to learn of the murder of 19-year-old Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott, a sophomore in the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire, who had been missing since Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012. Marriott, who was residing with family in Chester while commuting to UNH, was studying marine biology. She was in her first semester at UNH.

“We were greatly saddened to learn of Lizzi’s death and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends,” said UNH President Mark W. Huddleston. “Lizzi was a new member of the university community and will be missed in our classrooms. Our focus now will be on supporting our campus community during this difficult time.”

A moment of silence in Lizzi’s honor will be observed at the beginning of tonight’s men’s hockey game.
University officials were also shocked to learn a UNH alum has been charged in connection with Marriott’s death. Seth Mazzaglia graduated in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in theater.

The UNH counseling staff will be available to students who want to speak with someone. The UNH Counseling Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week, and 24-hour help is available to anyone by calling 603-862-2090.

Fraud Investigation Irvine, CA Woman Arrested in Mail-Fraud Scheme

IRVINE – A former insurance saleswoman with the American Family Life Assurance Company has been indicted by a federal grand jury on mail-fraud charges stemming from an alleged scheme involving $4 million in disability benefits.

Patricia Diane Smith Sledge, 56, of Irvine was arrested Thursday and is facing four counts of mail fraud for her part in a scheme to submit fraudulent disability insurance claims to AFLAC for fake businesses with fake injured employees, according to federal prosecutors.
http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Sledge sold disability policies to others involved in the alleged scheme and then the others claimed fake injuries and AFLAC sent them disability benefit checks, the indictment alleges.

Sledge allegedly received part of the money. AFLAC fired sledge in October 2011 after conducting an internal investigation.

“Unscrupulous Life Agents who allegedly commit crimes by creating ghost businesses and non-existent employees to game the system will be apprehended and prosecuted,” California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said in a statement. “A disability insurance fraud scheme such as this drives up the cost of coverage and premiums for both consumers and providers and the Department is committed to rooting it out.”

Each count of mail fraud carries a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.

Sledge’s indictment is related to two other cases involving the same fictitious employer scheme, according to federal prosecutors

Identity Theft 8 Indicted in Detroit After Scam Busted

DETROIT (WWJ) – Eight individuals were indicted by a federal grand jury in Detroit on charges relating to identity theft, United States Attorney Barbara L. McQuade announced Friday.

Charges in the indictment include use of counterfeit access devices, aggravated identity theft, theft of government money, and conspiracy to commit those offenses.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Indicted were: 24-year-old Kenneth Dixon, 24-year-old Carl Lesely, 27-year-old Shalace Washington, 24-year-old Rufus Washington, and 23-year-old Charles Durr, all from Detroit; as well as 24-year-old Nakita Washington, 27-year-old Darius Washington, and 22-year-old Jamela Washington, all from Warren.

The four count indictment charges that between October 2009 through April 2012, the defendants systematically engaged in a conspiracy to obtain the personal identification information of unsuspecting victims, and then used that information to submit fraudulent on-line claims for unemployment compensation benefits.

McQuade said over 100 individuals were victimized and over $400,000 was stolen.

“Technology makes it easier than ever to commit fraud, but technology also enables investigators to detect these schemes. Perpetrators of identity fraud should take note that they will be caught and prosecuted,” McQuade said in a release.

Unemployment Insurance Agency Director Steve Arwood said people who willfully commit unemployment insurance fraud should know that “the state of Michigan and the UIA are serious about detecting and preventing fraud.”

“Unemployment insurance fraud is a crime that affects everyone, by driving up taxes for businesses and threatening the integrity of the unemployment insurance system for those who really need it. We appreciate the great work of the U.S. Department Of Labor Inspector General in working with us to investigate and bring these cases to justice,” Arwood said in a statement.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendants are entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
