Fraud Investigation 3 Indicted in Lubbock Bank Fraud Charges

A Lubbock federal grand jury has indicted two men and a woman on bank fraud-related charges after authorities found more than $600,000 worth of fake money orders linked to two defendants.

The indictment, released Thursday, said Michael Glenn Hughes, Michael Isaac Garcia and Dominga Alma Hernandez passed 14 counterfeit U.S. Postal Service money orders worth about $13,200 at area banks and credit unions from September 2011 through April 2012.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Authorities seized about $687,800 in counterfeit money orders from the home where Hughes and Hernandez lived, the indictment said.

The indictment said the defendants took part in a scheme in which they deposited fake money orders into opened or newly opened bank accounts and withdrew money from the accounts before employees determined the money orders were fake.

The defendants carried out the scheme at Amarillo National Bank locations in Amarillo and Borger, a Wells Fargo bank in Borger, Pantex Federal Credit Union and the Borger Federal Credit Union, the indictment said.

The indictment lists four instances when Garcia deposited or cashed fake money orders that Hughes had given him.

In another recent case, a federal grand jury indicted a man on an aggravated robbery charge linked to a September incident when authorities said the man stole about $2,600 from the Amarillo Community Federal Credit Union’s Pampa branch.

The grand jury indicted Billy Michael Grimes on Wednesday.

Authorities said Grimes had a firearm and an object perceived to be a dangerous weapon during the robbery, documents show.

Missing Person Christopher Ryan of Redwood City, CA

Deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office are searching for a 54-year-old man from Redwood City who was last seen Tuesday morning, Oct. 9.

Christopher Ryan is considered at-risk because he needs daily medication for a medical condition.

A statement sent out by the Sheriff’s Office said that Ryan’s sister, Katie Glapzel, reported him missing after she had not heard from him in more than 24 hours. Ryan was last seen around 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday in Redwood City, where he lives.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Glapzel told deputies it is very unusual for Ryan not to keep in contact with his family. Calls to his cell phone had gone unanswered for an extended period of time. Sheriff’s deputies attempted to trace the cell phone with the assistance of AT&T, but since the phone was turned off, a location could not be pinpointed.

At that point, Ryan was immediately entered into the Missing Persons system so that other law enforcement agencies could help keep an eye out for him.

After beginning a search for Ryan, deputies found Ryan’s car on Wednesday, Oct. 10 just after 11:30 p.m. off the side of the road near the junction of highways 280 and 92 in San Mateo County. His cell phone and medication were in the vehicle.

Ryan is Caucasian, 54 years old, approximately 6 feet tall and weighs around 170 pounds. He has blond hair, blue eyes and a medium complexion.

If you have any information on Ryan or believe you have seen him, please contact Detective Armando with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office at 650-363-4911.

Wrongful Death 20 Yr Old TX Mom Confessed to Killing 2 Babies

A 20-year-old Texas mother who is now pregnant with her fourth child has confessed to killing two of her infant children, according to police, who said that she told them she thought she “had too many kids.”

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Kristi-An Walker confessed to killing her 4-month-old son in April 2011 and her 6-month-old son son in June 2012, Angleton, Texas, police said. Police told ABC affiliate KTRK that Walker, who also has a 3-year-old son, admitted to throwing her babies and banging their heads.

“She said she had too many kids,” Sgt. Kirk Coleman of the Angleton Police Department told KTRK Tuesday. “She had three kids. She didn’t want to have three. She thought she did. The kids would cry and it would frustrate her, and she would lose control, and she would bang their heads.

“She would take him from the car seat, and she would bang his head on the metal part of the bassinet,” Coleman said.

Walker was indicted last week on a murder charge and two counts of injury to a child.

Coleman told ABC News today that a judge had issued a gag order in Walker’s case as of Tuesday.

Angleton police investigating the June death of Walker’s 6-month-old soon learned that in 2011 another of her sons had died in Freeport, Texas, the Associated Press reported. Investigators in Freeport closed the case after an autopsy revealed the cause of death was undetermined.

“Hindsight was that there was more that we could have done, and from reflection and an interview we’ve done with a different detective, I think there are things we could have done differently,” Chief Tyrone Morrow of the Freeport Police Department told KTRK.

After the death of her first child, Walker moved to nearby Angelton, where police said she confessed to killing her 6-month-old, who was hooked up to a breathing monitor, the following year.

According to Coleman, it was on June 20 when Walker banged the 6-month-old’s head. She didn’t call for medical help.

Angleton police arrested Walker on a charge of injury to a child on July 26. Calls made today to the Arlington district attorney by ABC News were unreturned.

Despite her daughter’s confession to police, Walker’s mother, Carol Shelton, maintains her daughter is innocent.

“She wouldn’t hurt those boys in any way,” Shelton said. “She loved those boys more than anything.”

Police said that Walker is now four weeks pregnant. She is currently being held in Brazoria County Jail on a murder charge stemming from the death of her 6-month-old son, and charges of injury to a child in both deaths.

Walker’s 3-year-old son is currently in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Drug Dog Sweep Found $1.5M In Drugs This Week on Border Checks

The U.S. Border Patrol has nabbed $1.5 million in meth, cocaine and marijuana since Saturday.

The seizures resulted from five different stops at checkpoints on the I-8, the I-15 and the I-5 near San Clemente, according to a release from the patrol.

At noon Saturday agents at the I-8 checkpoint encountered a 20 year-old male U.S. citizen driving a 2002 Suzuki XL7. Agents were suspicious when they stopped him and brought in a drug dog, which indicated there were drugs in the rear of the car. A subsequent look using technical equipment showed a hollow above the gas tanks, which was filled with 14.47 pounds of meth worth an estimated $289,400.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

At about 1 p.m. Monday, agents stopped a 21-year-old man who is a U.S. citizen at the I-8 checkpoint. A drug dog sniffed out 58 packages of marijuana in various locations, including the engine air filter, the doors, and the rear quarter panels. The weed weighed a total of 99.35 pounds and had an estimated street value of $149,010.

Forty minutes later that same day, agents nabbed a 43-year-old male U.S. citizen at the I-5 checkpoint south of San Clemente. The dogs sniffed around the man’s 2003 Ford Expedition and turned up 22 bundles of cocaine hidden inside the seats. The cocaine weighed 53.68 pounds and was worth an estimated $590,480.

At 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, agents at the I-15 checkpoint near Murrieta stopped a 43-year-old woman, a Mexican national, driving a 1997 Accura Integra. The dogs sniffed out a two fire extinguishers, each stuffed with three pounds of meth worth about $120,000 total.

Later that same day, I-15 agents stopped a 19-year-old female U.S. citizen and her passenger in a ’97 Ford Escort. The drug dog led agents to 12 bundles of methamphetamine inside the spare tire. The narcotics weighed 15.32 pounds and had an estimated street value of $306,400.

The U.S. Border Patrol seized all the vehicles, arrested the suspects and turned the dope over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Fraud Investigation Rockville, NY Women Pleaded Guilty Craigslist Scam

A Rockville Centre woman pleaded guilty Wednesday after using fake Craigslist ads for nonexistent jobs and apartments to steal steal hundreds of identities nationwide and filing hundreds of fraudulent tax returns, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

Susan Pemberton, 43, of Rockville Centre, pleaded guilty to grand larceny in the third degree, scheme to defraud in the first degree, offering a false instrument for filing, and identity theft in the second degree. She faces two to four years in prison at her Jan. 23 sentencing.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

According to the Nassau County DA’s office, Pemberton, along with Cynthia Sibert, 23, of Roslyn, requested more than $500,000 in state income tax refunds, which raised flags at the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. They also used the stolen identities to apply for bank loans and credit cards and stole a total of more than $75,000.

Throughout the nearly two-year long scam, the women placed ads on Craigslist for employment opportunities and apartment rentals that didn’t exist, Rice said. They sent their victims employment and rental applications that sought personal information and used that data to file more than 250 fraudulent tax returns, and to obtain bank loans and credit cards in their victims’ names.

Search warrants executed at the defendants’ homes and rental mailboxes uncovered several computers, hundreds of documents, and notebooks with detailed records of the victims’ personal information and tax refund amounts, with several entries marked “BIG FAT REFUND,” Rice said.

Credit cards and checkbooks in names other than the defendants, as well as credit card purchases of luxury goods, like Gucci baby shoes, were found at the defendants’ homes, Rice said. Printouts of the Craigslist rental and job ads and applications were also found.

“These women were nothing more than two small-time scam artists who preyed on hard-working people looking for a job,” Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said. “My office will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute those who steal the identities of others for their own criminal gain. I want to thank the State Department of Taxation and Finance for their invaluable contributions to this investigation.”

Sibert also used her job as a home health care aide to steal the identities of elderly people in her care and opened credit cards in their names, Rice said.

Pemberton was arrested Nov. 16, 2011.

Cibert pleaded guilty to her involvement in the scam last June and was sentenced to time served and five years probation. A third co-defendant, Keith Campbell, 52, of Brooklyn, also pleaded guilty to his involvement last July and received a conditional discharge.

The arrests were the result of a joint investigation between the DA’s Office and the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance’s Criminal Investigation Division – Buffalo Office. The investigation was assisted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Missing Person Colorado Girl UPDATE

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (AP) Colorado police looking for a 10-year-old girl who disappeared on her walk to school have found a body in a park, but are not saying whether it is linked to the case and noted Thursday that officers are still searching for her.

The discovery of the body is the latest turn in the disappearance of Jessica Ridgeway that has seen police look for clues in a reported sighting in a car with Colorado plates in Maine and a Wyoming abduction. The FBI said Thursday that abduction was unrelated.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Police spokesman Trevor Materasso said the body “is not intact,” and that has slowed the work of identification. Materasso said no other information would be released until Friday, and he left a brief midday news conference without answering any questions.

Police earlier declined to say whether the body was that of a child.

The body was found late Wednesday at Pattridge Park in park in the Denver suburb of Arvada, about seven miles from where Jessica disappeared in the nearby suburb of Westminster on Oct. 5.

Materasso said investigators were processing evidence from the park and that no additional information was available. He left without answering questions.

In tweets, Westminster police said investigators had worked overnight to identify the body. Officers searched more of the park Thursday as well as areas closer to Jessica’s home. Police said photo radar vans normally used to detect and photograph speeding vehicles were being used to monitor some streets around the girl’s house.

Police have ruled out her parents Sarah Ridgeway, who lives Colorado, and Jeremiah Bryant, who lives in Missouri. Authorities believe Jessica was kidnapped by an “unknown suspect.”

Jessica’s mother last saw her daughter walking to school. The girl never arrived, setting off a frantic search by hundreds of law enforcement officials and residents.

Aurelio Florez, who has lived in Jessica’s neighborhood for six years, said it was shocking that Jessica could have vanished during a two-block walk to a park where she usually met friends before continuing on to school.

“You can see the park from her front door,” he said.

Fliers about the fifth-grader were posted on nearly every house in her neighborhood of modest, two-story homes with single-car garages. Purple ribbons, a symbol of hope for her return, were tied around trees.

It was a lively area where children played outdoors, said another neighbor, Luis Pena, but since Jessica disappeared, parents are keeping their children inside and people look at each other with suspicion.

“Nobody trusts anybody anymore,” he said.

The only real clue police have revealed in Jessica’s disappearance is the discovery over the weekend of a backpack and water bottle that she had with her when she disappeared. Police won’t discuss what was found in the bag or test results on it.

The items were found in the town of Superior, some six miles from her home. The spot where the possessions were found is about 7 miles from the park.

Police initially said the public didn’t need to fear a kidnapper, then that they were investigating whether the case might be related to that of another girl who was abducted for several hours Monday in Wyoming.

In that case, a man lured the girl into a sport utility vehicle, saying he needed help finding his puppy. The girl was discovered by hunters. The FBI said it does not believe the cases are related. Police are searching for a suspect.

Adding to the mystery was a reported sighting more than 2,000 miles away in Maine one of hundreds of leads being investigating from at least five states.

Westminster police repeatedly have urged the public to study the details of Jessica’s face in a photo a small, gap-toothed grin, a slight bruise on her nose and a short home video, hoping someone may have seen something.

Additional police were sent to Jessica’s school, said Lynn Setzer, spokeswoman for Jeffco Public Schools. The district has its own security officers at other middle schools and high schools.

Steve Saunders, a spokesman for nearby Adams County schools, said the district is trying to strike a balance between reassuring students and their parents that they are safe, while encouraging them to be vigilant.

Saunders said the district has security officers at all middle schools, but not elementary or high schools. He said the district will seek more help if authorities believe it is warranted.

BOISE — A southeastern Idaho man is going to prison for 10 years after he was convicted of defrauding the Idaho State Insurance Fund.

Thirty-nine-year-old Terry Melvin of Montpelier was sentenced Wednesday in 4th District Court in Boise.

He’ll also have to pay a $10,000 fine plus court costs and another $591 in restitution.

In court, Melvin acknowledged that he made false statements to the insurance fund, claiming he was injured in order to get extended workman’s compensation benefits.

As he accepted the benefits for more than one year, Melvin received income from odd jobs.

During the period, he also was filmed walking, riding a bike and climbing stairs — all with no apparent discomfort.
