Pedophile Tracking Registered Sex Offender Arrested for Child Porn

A 50-year-old Southborough man was arrested on Sept. 30 for reportedly possessing images of child pornography.

Daniel Goichman, a registered sex offender, was arraigned in Westborough District Court on Oct. 1 on three counts of possession of child pornography charges. He pleaded not guilty and is due back in court on Oct. 31 for a pre-trial conference.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

In February 2012, Massachusetts State Police obtained information indicating that a registered sex offender was allegedly soliciting minors over the Internet. On Sept. 27, troopers executed a search warrant at Goichman’s Southborough residence and seized Goichman’s computer which reportedly contained files of child pornography.

The suspect was arrested without incident at his home on Sept. 30.

Being a Level 2 sex offender, Goichman was not supposed to be living within 1,000 feet of places where children gather; however, Goichman has been living for over two years at his apartment building just a few houses away from Village Preschool.

Goichman was convicted in 2002 for sexually assaulting a minor. When he first moved to the East Main Street apartment building, he registered his new address.

Police in Southborough should have checked it out, but that never happened.

The new information came to light during Goichman’s most recent arrest.

Goichman has 30 days to move out of the apartment building.

Town leaders are assuring residents that this will not happen again.

Wrongful Death Winder, GA Body Found in Concrete

Twin brothers were arrested after police in Barrow County uncovered a body Monday that was placed in a plastic container, encased in concrete and buried in the ground.

The remains had not been identified Monday night but are believed to be those of a man reported missing from Pensacola, Fla., nearly a month ago, Dennis Dorsey, Winder police chief, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Two brothers were arrested and charged with concealing a death, Dorsey said. The 31-year-old men, Christopher and William Cormier, could face additional charges pending the outcome of the investigation.

“We don’t even have a cause of death yet,” Dorsey said by phone Monday night. “If the autopsy shows what we expect it will show, the charges could be upgraded.”

Dorsey said his department received a call Monday morning from the Pensacola Police Department regarding a 30-year-old man missing since Sept. 13. The missing man, whose name was not released, was last seen with the Cormiers, according to police.

The brothers, who previously lived in Pensacola, told neighbors they were moving to Georgia, and the missing man was coming along, Dorsey said.

“They showed up at the father’s address about three weeks ago,” Dorsey said.

But the brothers’ friend was not with them, Dorsey said. The two told their father, the owner of the home, that their friend had moved somewhere else, the chief said.

The Cormiers also told their father that their friend’s dog had died, and they planned to bury it in the backyard of the family home, in the 200 block of Sixth Avenue in Winder, Dorsey said.

“They claimed they buried the dog,” Dorsey said.

Investigators arrived at the home Monday, executed a search warrant and, in the backyard, spotted an area where something had been buried, Dorsey said.

It wasn’t a dog. With heavy machinery owned by the city, investigators unearthed a large plastic container that had been encased in concrete, Dorsey said. By cutting around the bottom of the container, investigators found the human remains, he said.

The GBI and Pensacola police were alerted to the findings, and both agencies are expected to assist Winder police with the investigation, Dorsey said.

An autopsy will be conducted by the GBI to determine the person’s identity and a cause of death, and investigators from Pensacola were en route to Barrow County.

“We transported the large block of concrete with the body enclosed to the crime lab,” Dorsey said.

Investigators said they do not believe the Cormiers’ father will face charges.

Private Detective Thousands of Dollars of Donations Stolen

Two Iowa ministers were on their way to a church in Pike County, when their trailer hauling thousands of dollars in donations was stolen. In that trailer was food, clothing, furniture, even christmas presents for less fortunate kids.

The iowa missionaries stopped at a hotel outside of Indianapolis Friday night on their way to their final destination: Elkhorn City, Kentucky. In hotel surveillance video, you’re about to see someone drive off in the couple’s truck, pulling that trailer, just two and a half hours before they planned to hit the road.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Connie Mertens and her husband were pulling that U-Haul

“It makes me sad that someone would steal from families in need because they wanted a truck,” Mertens tells us.

That U-Haul was packed with everything from baby cribs to winter coats to christmas presents. The Mertens, and other families at their church in Iowa, have been collecting donations since March.

Seventy-five families at the Light House Ministry Center in Pike County would get those gifts. Saturday morning, everything was gone.

“I couldn’t hardly keep my breakfast down when I thought about all the kids that aren’t going to get these things,” Mertens says. “That someone would steal what little these kids would be given for Christmas to keep their feet warm in the winter, blankets, and food, they could steal it. And they have no concept of what they took.”

The Mertens are begging the thieves to return the truck and trailer and they won’t press charges.

“We just are praying that whoever did this will realize that it was not something valuable that you could resell, it was something for people who are really struggling to make ends meet,” Connie Mertens says.

A few personal items, such as the couple’s laptop, camera, and family bibles were also stolen. At this point, we’re told police have no leads.

The truck has an Iowa license plate. The trailer has a Colorado plate. If you have any information about what happened, call police.

Arson Investigation San Jose Trash Fires

SAN JOSE — Authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying the culprit in a string of trash bin fires set in West San Jose over the past couple of weeks, according to the San Jose Fire Department.

Reports of the arson fires, seemingly targeting Dumpsters and surrounding vegetation, first popped up Sept. 30 and have since grown to at least five incidents — some residents report as many as seven — in the area of Downing Avenue off South Bascom Avenue.

The fires, which have burned up the bins and nearby bushes have caused no serious property damage, have been spotted on weekends, but that is the only discernible pattern, fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez said.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

No witnesses come forward, which is something arson investigators hope will change, given the potential for greater damage in a future fire.

“Our concern is if these are being intentionally set, they can cause significant property damage or loss of life,” Gutierrez said. “We are taking this investigation seriously.”

Anyone with information about the fires can contact the San Jose Fire Department’s arson tip line at 408-27-ARSON (27766).

Authorities remind citizens to never provide private financial information such as account numbers, passwords or PIN numbers over the phone or by text or email. They emphasize that legitimate financial institutions will not request such information from you.

Wrongful Death Lexington Man Sentenced in 2010 Death of Father

A Lexington man who pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of his father back when he was still a teenager in 2010 was sentenced in the case Monday.

Police say Verdis Kyle Pennington III, who was 18 at the time, shot his father Verdis K. Pennington Jr., 50, on November 30, 2010. The coroner says Pennington, Jr. later died at UK Hospital from a gunshot wound to the head.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Pennington III, now 20, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday.

Police originally believed the son was handing his father a gun to clean when it went off, and initially said they thought the shooting was accidental. But after further investigation, police say the pair had an argument before the shooting and arrested the younger Pennington and charged him with murder.

The mother of the then-teen and wife of the victim, Angela Pennington, said that she believed that her son had reached a breaking point after being verbally abused by his father. “I’m more angry with my husband,” she said in 2010. “I’m not angry with my son. I seen it coming and there was nothing that I could do.”

Insurance Fraud Salisbury Husband and Wife Charged

SALISBURY — A local man will spend the next two years on probation following his guilty pleas in court last week for stashing his Mercedes at a Haverhill garage, after claiming it was stolen and collecting $17,000 from his insurance company.

Eric J. Bernardini, 39, of 78 North End Blvd., Salisbury, pleaded guilty to filing a false vehicle insurance claim, moving the vehicle with the intent to defraud and filing a false vehicle theft report with police.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

On each of the first two charges, Judge Allen Swan sentenced Bernardini to one year in the house of correction, suspending the jail time and imposing two years’ probation. On the third charge of filing a false vehicle theft report with Amesbury police, Swan sentenced Bernardini to two years’ probation.

One of the conditions of Bernardini’s probation is to make financial restitution for his crime; however, the amount has yet to be determined.

Charges of larceny of more than $250 by a single scheme and issuing a false statement under penalty of perjury were dropped.

Bernardini’s wife, Jennifer, 37, was also charged with filing a false vehicle insurance claim. She pleaded to sufficient facts, and Swan continued her case without finding, placing her on probation for one year.

All other charges against her related to this crime were dismissed, but she still faces two drug-related charges, according to Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokeswoman for the Essex County district attorney’s office.

Eric Bernardini’s scheme to defraud his insurance company came to the attention of the Governor’s Auto Theft Strike Force Unit of the state police after a tip was received at the Andover barracks.

According to Trooper Nicholas Baggetta, on Jan. 17 an anonymous source reported that a black Mercedes was parked at Superior Auto Detailing on Hilldale Avenue in Haverhill. According to the source, an employee of the company bragged the vehicle was “involved in an insurance scam” and “set to be chopped.”

Court documents indicate that on Jan. 20 Baggetta met with Haverhill police Detective John Moses and both visited the detail shop, finding the 2005 black Mercedes in the parking lot. Baggetta ran a check on the car’s vehicle identification number, learning it had been reported stolen to the Amesbury police in late October 2011.

Officers spoke with the garage owner, Matthew P. McAuliffe, 41, of Old Groveland Road, Haverhill, who said the Mercedes belonged to one of his friends, Eric Barnardini, and it was being stored at the shop for the winter. When told of the tip police received, according to Baggetta’s report, McAuliffe expressed anger at Bernardini.

McAuliffe provided an initial written statement concerning how the car got to his Haverhill garage, stating it was being stored while its owner was in Florida for the winter. McAuliffe said three months prior to the police visit he’d run into Bernardini, who asked if the facility could store his car. McAuliffe said he agreed storage could take place for $500, adding he’d known Bernardini for a long time.

According to one of McAuliffe’s employee, the car was dropped off in late October or early November of 2011 by a man.

Baggetta recovered the vehicle and had it towed to an impound lot, where the car was examined and items within it inventoried.

According to Amesbury police officer Jason Kooken’s report, on Oct. 28, 2011, he was sent to Planet Fitness at about 8:30 p.m. to take a report of a stolen car. Upon arrival, Jennifer Bernardini said she’d arrived at the gym around 6 p.m. to work out. When she was ready to leave, she couldn’t find her husband’s Mercedes in the parking lot where she left it. She said she had only one set of keys and the car had been freshly painted.

“Mrs. Bernardini was crying on and off the whole time she was talking to me,” according to Kooken’s report.

According to court documents, Kooken noted he found no broken glass in the parking lot where the car had been parked or drag marks to indicate the car had been towed.

Back at the Amesbury police station, Jennifer Bernardini signed the stolen car report and the police entered the vehicle into the national crime database and issued a “be on the lookout” broadcast in hopes of other agencies spotting the stolen car.

During the process, Kooken learned Eric Bernardini’s Massachusetts drivers’ license had been suspended for failure to pay child support.

“Mr. Bernardini was not as upset about the car as he was about learning his license was suspended,” Kooken wrote. “Ms. Bernardini was more upset about the car than her husband.”

As the investigation progressed, Allstate Insurance was contacted to obtain the car’s insurance theft claim file. The insurance claim affidavit was signed by Eric Bernardini for the theft of the car, citing the same scenario as that given to Amesbury police. The affidavit also included the claim that there was only one set of keys in the Bernardinis’ possession with no duplicate sets made. The couple also said they had no knowledge of the whereabouts of the car, which was purchased for $19,499 from Prestige Motor Sales of Malden in December 2010.

Allstate processed the claim, issuing two checks: one to Eric Bernardini for $2,656.96 on Dec. 23, 2011, and another to Wells Fargo Dealer Service, the loan holder, for $14,348.04 on Dec. 22.

On Jan. 25, Baggetta returned to McAuliffe, who, after signing a Miranda Rights form, issued a formal statement, repeating he’d agreed to store Bernardini’s Mercedes for the winter for $500, McAuliffe said. Bernardini dropped off the car, paid $300, saying was going to Florida and had no place to park the car. Bernardini did not leave the keys at that time, saying he was afraid McAuliffe would drive it, according to McAuliffe’s statement..
