Warm Springs police arrested two women, Tana Lawrence and Angeledith Kalama, on charges of assault and battery, kidnapping and sexual assault related to Kalama’s disappearance, according to the bureau. Both women, tribal members, are housed in the tribal detention facility. The women may face federal charges in the future, according to the FBI release.

Arson Investigation Barns and Sheds Set on Fire in Nicholas County, KY

A series of barns and sheds were destroyed by fire overnight in Nicholas County. Police believe it’s the work of an arsonist.

The Nicholas County Sheriff says it’s unlikely it’s a coincidence that 4 or 5 barns or sheds were set on fire overnight. They don’t know yet how the fires were started so an arson investigator from State Police is looking into that on Saturday.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

It happened along Johnson Road. The sheriff says it appears someone targeted property along the road.

Anita Smith says there was about $1,500 worth of hay inside. But it’s not the monetary loss or even the aggravation that has her most upset. It’s the emotions tied to the building. “Well this farm was part of my great grandmother’s farm. So it’s been here ever since I can remember,” says Smith.

Right down the road is Ronald Mynear, his shed of hay was hit, too. “We had square bales in this one, round bales stored in the barn,” says Mynear. He says he doesn’t have any enemies that he knows about. “Somebody didn’t have enough to do and wanted to have a little fun at somebody else’s expense.”

Nicholas County Sheriff adds they do have some leads to work with, but no where near having a persons of interest yet or making an arrest.

No one was injured in any of the fires.

Wrongful Death Child Body Found in Shallow Grave in Long Island

A routine visit by child welfare authorities on Long Island touched off a multi-county search for a boy who was mysteriously absent, an amber alert for one of the boy’s brothers and finally to the discovery early Saturday of a small body in a shallow grave in the backyard of the family’s home, the police said.

The chain of events that led eventually to the remains began on Wednesday, according to Major Patrick Regan of the state police. Representatives of Suffolk County Child Protective Services visited the home of Robert Rodriguez and Heather Kowalczik in Farmingdale to look into the welfare of their 6-year-old son Alex, who is autistic.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

At some point, Major Regan said, Ms. Kowalczik mentioned that she had three children, Alex, Robbie, who is 9, and Justin, who is 3. However, Major Regan said, the child welfare authorities could account for only two of the boys, Alex and Robbie.

Ms. Kowalczik told the investigators that Justin was with relatives in Orange County, where the family used to live, Major Regan said. The Suffolk child welfare authorities then contacted their counterparts in Middletown, N.Y. An agent in Middletown then called the state police there, who in turn contacted troopers on Long Island, Major Regan said.

The state police asked Ms. Kowalczik to speak with them and she made statements that prompted them to begin digging in the backyard of the two-story cream colored house on Hallock Road.

Then on Friday, the police became alarmed when Robbie did not show up for school. They circulated an amber alert and eventually found the child with his father, Mr. Rodriguez, who had left the home.

On Saturday, near a corrugated metal fence at the edge of the yard, the authorities found the remains, buried in a grave no more than 3 feet deep. The police believe that the body had been there since July 2010.

The police also said they believed that the body was Justin’s, and were investigating the case as a homicide. The medical examiner’s office was to determine the cause of death.

On Saturday neighbors gathered near the house, where a statue of the Virgin Mary stood in a front yard cordoned off by yellow police tape.

One of them, Michele Peavey, 49, said that Ms. Kowalczik came over to her house crying on Friday morning. Her husband, Jimmy Peavey, 53, said that Ms. Kowalczik seemed unusually burdened and that he thought that she was on the verge of confiding something, but then left.

“She said ‘see you later’ but she never came back to our house,” he said.

Ms. Peavey said that Alex has been in a hospital for a few weeks. The Peaveys said they had never seen a third child.

“There was never a baby here,” said Louie Lancia, who owns the house. “All of the outside of my house, I have a landscaper come every week. How could they not see anything?”

Mr. Lancia said he saw Mr. Rodriguez once a month when either he or his wife came to the house to collect the rent, $1,300 a month.

The state police said that Mr. Rodriquez was a salesman for a PC Richard store in Greenvale. Ms.Kowalczik worked at a pizzeria in Farmingdale, neighbors said.

On Friday night, Major Regan said, Mr. Rodriguez was brought to a state police station in Farmingdale for questioning. He was accompanied by a lawyer, Major Regan added and declined to answer questions. Investigators planned to speak further with Mr. Rodriguez and Ms. Kowalczik.

“We believe that both of them have a lot of information,” he said on Saturday. “We’re treating this as a suspicious death.”

Fraud Investigation 3 Suspected of Real Estate Fraud

Detectives arrested three people Friday in connection with a complex real estate fraud scheme centering around a multi-million dollar La Canada Flintridge home, authorities said.

Saliya “Sal” DeSilva, 49, of Northridge, Nora Yefima, 50, of Santa Clarita and Vahe Hayrapetian, 45, of Burbank were each arrested at their homes Friday after being indicted by a federal grand jury Tuesday on charges of wire and bank fraud, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said in a written statement.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

The alleged scheme began in July of 2009 after the owner of a $3.5 million home on Gould Avenue in La Canada Flintridge defaulted on the mortgage, officials said. Bank of America then foreclosed and the property and took possession of it.

Posing as the home’s previous owner and presenting counterfeit documents, DeSilva contacted Bank of America and persuaded officials there that the foreclosure was improper, sheriff’s officials said.

The bank rescinded the foreclosure and DeSilva, who is a licensed real estate salesperson, “listed the property for sale without the consent or knowledge of the prior owner,” according to the sheriff’s department statement.

DeSilva sold the house in 2011 through a fraudulent short sale for a fraction of it’s market value, officials said. Fraudulent documents were used to move the transaction forward.

The buyer obtained $1.5 million in loans for the purchase, which were wire transferred to Oshana Escrow in Encino, owned by Yefima.

Yefima is

accused of sending false documents to a title insurance company, Fidelity National Title Company, as well as wiring a small portion of the $1.5 million loan to the title insurance company while dispersing more than $1 million to “several other parties who had nothing to do with the transaction,” according to the statement.

In order to secure the fraudulent $1.5 million loan, authorities allege loan broker Vahe Hayrapetian provided falsified documents to the lender.

The new buyer of the Gould Avenue home defaulted on the allegedly fraudulent loan, officials said. But since Bank of America never approved the short sale and is still owed $3.5 million, there is not enough equity in the home to reimburse the subsequent lender for the $1.5 million lost in the defaulted loan.

The title insurance company may end up having to pay for the discrepancy, officials added.

The investigation was carried out by detectives from the sheriff’s Real Estate Fraud Team, in partnership with the FBI.

Wrongful Death Tenn. Man Arrested in KY After Running Over Woman

Deputies with the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office arrested James Paul Cook, 55, of McLemoresville, Tenn., Thursday night following the death of a Puryear, Tenn., woman in the Wildcat Beach area of the county.

Major Clayton Hendricks said Cook faces charges of murder, operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and leaving the scene of an accident.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Hendricks said Cook was located inside a blue van near the beach at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday. He said the van matched the description of a vehicle that was reported to have struck Desiree Moore, 37, near a driveway at 1029 Wildcat Drive about an hour earlier. Moore was taken to Murray-Calloway County Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Following an investigation, Hendricks said police allege Moore and Cook were in the van together when an argument developed between them, resulting in Moore leaving the vehicle and being ran over by the van at least two times.

“We received a call of a lady being hit by a vehicle and, once on the scene, we found the victim laying partially in the roadway and partially in the driveway. That’s when we were told that a blue van might be the vehicle involved and we began a search,” Hendricks said.

“Deputy Corey Keene then made a search of the area and discovered a blue van with the man we later found to be Cook inside.”

Moore was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. at MCCH by Coroner Rick Harris. Her body will be taken to Louisville today for an autopsy at the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office.

Harris said an exact cause will be determined at that time.

Hendricks said Deputy Gene Johnson and Sgt. Charles Tidwell were also involved in the case. Cook was lodged in the Calloway County Jail in Murray.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Calloway County Commonwealth Attorney’s and the Calloway County Coroner’s Office.

Identity Theft Brattleboro, VT Woman Faces up to 12 Years

BRATTLEBORO — A 38-year-old Brattleboro woman faces up to 12 years behind bars after being charged with identity theft.

On Tuesday, Tanya L. Maskell pleaded not guilty to one count of felony false personation and one misdemeanor count of fraudulent communication systems.

According to the affidavit, Maskell opened an account with Comcast to receive Internet, phone and television, using someone else’s name and information.

The victim contacted Brattleboro police on July 11, after she discovered Maskell had used her name to open the account.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Maskell told police “It was just a misunderstanding” and that she would resolve the problem by closing the account the next day.

About two weeks later however, the victim received a bill for $187.83 from the account Maskell had allegedly opened using her information.

When contacted by police, Maskell said she closed the account when she was instructed to and the bill must have been from equipment she hadn’t returned. She said because she doesn’t have a car, she was unable to return the equipment.

On Aug. 23, a second bill from Comcast arrived, this time for the $556.28.

After meeting with Brattleboro Police Officer Carl Warner a second time, Maskell claimed she opened the account with the victim’s permission, but closed it immediately after her first meeting with Warner.

If convicted, Maskell is facing up to a decade in prison for the

false personation charge and possibly an additional two years for defrauding a telecommunications company. She could also be forced to pay up to $2,500 in fines.

Identity Theft 4 Arrested in Sunnyside, WA

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — Sunnyside police arrested four Lower Valley residents earlier this week and seized 2 pounds of marijuana during an investigation into robbery, drug sales and identity theft.

About 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, gang unit officers, acting on a tip that a 19-year-old Sunnyside man committed a robbery, went to a house in the 1000 block of Decatur Avenue, where they found marijuana throughout the home, said Sgt. Joey Glossen in a news release.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Officers also arrested a 27-year-old Granger woman, a 37-year-old Prosser woman and a 21-year-old Grandview man, while obtaining a search warrant for the house, Glossen said.

Some of those arrested were known to at least associate with gangs, Glossen said.

They were being held at the Sunnyside jail Thursday evening.

During the search, officers found about 2 pounds of marijuana, scales, a gun and documents from a variety of places in Yakima and Benton counties, Glossen said. Many of the documents, including credit cards and forms of identification, were taken in two separate Benton County burglaries just a few hours earlier, he said.

So far, the four people are being investigated for firearm and drug charges, possession of stolen property and conspiracy to commit identity theft, Glossen said. Authorities may find additional victims as they continue to investigate, he said.

Ventura County authorities Friday arrested a 13-year-old Thousand Oaks boy suspected of starting three small arson fires this week, all in the same area near a popular hiking trailhead.

Wrongful Death Police Search for Gunman in Estill County, KY

Authorities are looking for the gunman who killed an Estill County man inside his own home.

Investigators say the body of 50-year-old Jackie Rogers was found Thursday afternoon inside the man’s basement on Ticky Fork Road in Ravenna.

“I don’t think that you could find anybody that would say that he wasn’t a nice fella,” said Hershel Clay Hatton, the uncle of Jackie Rogers. “He was more like a son than a nephew

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Hatton was the one who found Rogers dead Thursday in the home’s basement, when he went to check on his nephew who hadn’t shown up to work in several days.

“I don’t see why anybody would have a reason to just up and kill him,” Hatton said.

“It’s something that you don’t never expect. Especially not up here on the creek. And especially to happen to someone like Jackie,” said Roger’s cousin, Matthew Watson, who lives just down the street. “For someone to come in and do such an awful thing to someone that would have no harsh words to say to anybody, it’s just outrage.”

Investigators said Rogers was shot several times and his body had likely been in the home for days.

“I’m interested in the law finding out who done it, really,” Hatton said. “I know one thing. I’m gonna miss him.”

According to State Police, no arrests have been made in this homicide investigation. Investigators do say they are in the process of questioning people.

Rogers’ body has been taken to Frankfort for an autopsy. Funeral arrangements are pending.
