Missing Person Deanna Brooks of Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ — Despite several searches of roadside stops on the way to San Diego, 70-year-old Deanna Brooks of Santa Cruz remained missing Thursday.

Brooks, who works at Attilia’s Antiques on Soquel Drive, planned to attend her mother’s 90th birthday party in San Diego on Aug. 25. She typically drives to San Diego three to four times a year and takes Highway 1, said Brooks’ son, Stirling Flynn.

When Brooks did not arrive and family members were unable to reach her, they reported her missing.

“She’s never disappeared before,” Flynn said. “I don’t see a good outcome in this.”

Brooks is diabetic and on medications, and Flynn said he feared she had a seizure.

Family members on Thursday said they hoped to gain access to more of Brooks’ bank records to trace potential purchases since her disappearance. She withdrew cash Aug. 23, Flynn said.

Meanwhile, her friends and co-workers at Attilia’s worried.

“It’s been so many days now that it’s scary,” said Mary Milligan, a co-worker.

“We’ve really been putting the word out, spreading it all over.”

Brooks’ youngest son, 49-year-old Taylor Flynn of Santa Cruz, apparently was the last person to see her when he visited Brooks at her Berkeley Way home the night of Aug. 23.

Police described Brooks as a white woman about 5 feet 3 inches tall. She has brown hair and green eyes and walks with a walker, friends said.

Pedophile Tracking Accused Pedophile Found Working at State Fair

MONROE, Wash. — A woman who is a co-defendant in a pornography case in Snohomish County was able to get a job as a game operator at the Evergreen State Fair. An anonymous tip alerted authorities that Caitlin Ferry was working in Kiddie Land at the fair..

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Ferry had been arrested and charged this year, accused of child molestation and sexual exploitation of a minor. She was released from jail on bond. When Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputies learned that Ferry was working at the fair, they arrested her.
“A condition of her release was she was not to be around children,” said Lt. Rodney Rochon, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

Ferry was booked into the Snohomish County Jail, and she is expected to go before a judge Thursday.

Her arrest is upsetting for some parents who were at the fair.

“I think it is horrible. I think there shouldn’t be people involved in that around my children,” said one mother.

Fair manager Hal Gausman confirmed that background checks are conducted for the hundreds hired to work at the fair. Snohomish County makes some of the hires, and private companies fill positions to operate the rides and food booths.

So how did Ferry get a job? County spokesperson Christopher Schwarzen called it, “a flaw in the background check system.”

“This would not have shown up because the background checks show convictions,” said Lt. Rochon.

Background checks noting convictions only would not have caught the charges against Ferry who is still awaiting trial.

That surprised Gausman who said, ” we really want the public to be very confident that we can close this button hole.”

A company called Bulter Amusements is handling the carnival rides and hired Ferry, according to Gausman. County officials have already had conversations on how the improve the background check system. They plan to hold what’s called an action review after the fair to take a closer look at the issue.

Ferry is a co-defendant in a case that also names Enrique Sanchez-Leon. A trial was expected to begin in October.

Drug Dog Sweep Backpack Found with Meth Making Materials

Two men were arrested Friday after an Oak Ridge police officer allegedly found a backpack in a car trunk filled with materials and equipment used to make methamphetamine.

Oak Ridge Police Officer John Thomas stopped a black Chevrolet carrying the two men—Cody Clinton Brown, 23, of Clinton, and Lonnie Ray Carroll, 43, of Briceville—after he observed an alleged hand-to-hand exchange between that car and another vehicle at Walgreen’s. Thomas said both vehicles left the parking lot rapidly as he approached.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

After he stopped the Chevrolet, his drug-detecting dog alerted to a drug odor coming from the car, Thomas wrote in a court affidavit.

The backpack he found in the trunk contained coffee filters, bottles, funnels, pliers, a bottle containing a flammable liquid, tubing, and a plastic dish with a white crystalline residue inside, Thomas said. He said those components can be used to make meth.
Thomas also alleged that there was an empty pseudoephedrine box under the passenger seat and pseudoephedrine tablets in Brown’s pants.
A check of a database that tracks the sale of meth precursors showed that the woman in the other vehicle had just purchased the same brand, count, and type of pseudoephedrine at Walgreen’s at about the same time that he observed the vehicles at the store, Thomas said.

Brown and Carroll remained jailed Thursday morning. They have been charged with initiating the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Brown also allegedly had a set of brass knuckles in his pants pocket, and he was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.

Drug Dog Sweep 2 Arrested and $30k in Cocaine Seized

Two people were arrested and $30,000 in cocaine seized Wednesday after a traffic stop resulted in the seizure of drugs and led police to another cache of dope at an apartment nearby.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

According to Wilmington Police Department spokeswoman Lucy Crockett, a WPD officer spotted Rashad Shareef Beckett, 30, speeding on Carolina Beach Road near St. Andrews Drive.

When the vehicle was stopped, another officer with a drug-sniffing dog was called out to the scene and the dog indicated drugs in the vehicle, said Crockett.

Officers allegedly recovered from the trunk a “large quantity” of power and crack cocaine, Crockett said.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office narcotics unit worked with the Wilmington Police Department narcotics unit to follow up on the seizure, and detectives executed a search warrant at an apartment in the Palms at Dunhill, 5610 Carolina Beach Road. There they arrested Beckett’s girlfriend, Crystal Denise Royal, 27, and seized another large quantity of cocaine, Crockett said. In all, officers recovered half a kilogram of rock and powder cocaine, Crockett said.

Beckett and Royal both have been charged with multiple counts of trafficking cocaine and numerous related charges.

Beckett is being held at the New Hanover County Detention Facility under $750,000 secure bond. Royal also remains in custody. Her bond was set at $500,000.

Wrongful Death Arrest Made in Connetion with Human Remains Found in Fleming County

Mason County Jail officials say a man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of skeletal remains found in Fleming County.

An arrest warrant says that Mariano Arias committed two acts of murder on Sept. 1, 2010 in Fleming County.

A human skull was discovered in an an area off Delaney Road back on April 27. A few days later, officials found more bones in the area and said they were the remains of two different people.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Police said back in May that state medical examiners determined one set of bones belonged to a Hispanic female, age 17 to 25. She was approximately 5-feet tall. The second set of bones belonged to a male standing about 5-foot-5, also 17-25 years old. The second person was either white or Hispanic, and investigators say they lean toward Hispanic.

Police say both bodies had been in the area from four to 36 months.

Private Investigator Hired to Look into Newton Police Chief

Newton Police Chief Matthew Cummings was stripped of his badge and gun Wednesday morning.

Newton Mayor Setti Warren says he is moving to fire Cummings after an investigation concluded the chief acted inappropriately. The city hired a private investigator to look into claims by Cummings’ former secretary, Jeanne Sweeney Mooney. Mooney claims the chief verbally abused her two years ago, embarrassed her, and even kicked her in the ankle one time.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

Cummings admits he kicked Mooney, but says it was an innocent act.

“I kicked the shoe off of her foot and I didn’t do it violently, I didn’t do it hard,” Cummings said, saying Mooney’s shoe was hanging off.

But the city’s investigator concluded there was sufficient evidence to support Mooney’s claims, noting Cummings’ kick left a “bloody cut” and “sent the shoe flying, breaking its heel.” According to a summary of the investigation, Cummings’ actions did not seem to be angry or malicious in nature, but a failed attempt to be funny.

“I didn’t run a hostile work environment,” Cummings said. “I didn’t go around calling people names.”

Mooney also says the chief framed her for a crime in September of last year, accusing her of stealing $660 from an office envelope.

“We caught her in the act of doing something. We acted on it properly and this is just a result, it’s happened as a result of that,” said Cummings.

Mooney has been on paid leave from her job as the chief’s secretary for nearly a year now and was charged earlier this month with larceny over $250, charges she now hopes will be dropped.

As for Cummings, he plans to fight to get his job back.

“I’m not going to leave after 32 years of good service with this type of thing over my head,” he said.

Mooney says she took her complaints about the chief to a captain within the department, but they weren’t addressed. She is suing the city for her alleged treatment while working for the department.

Pedophile Tracking More Arrests Made in Connection with Puppeteer

TAMPA —

The international child pornography investigation that led to the arrest of a Largo puppeteer last month has netted two more suspects accused of being part of a network of sadistic pedophiles.

Ronald William Brown, 57, had entertained Tampa-area children with his puppets for years by the time he was arrested on federal charges of conspiring to kidnap a child and possession of child pornography. Authorities said Brown collected pornographic images of children and fantasized about strangling, dismembering, cooking and cannibalizing children.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

About a week after Brown’s arrest, federal Homeland Security Investigations agents arrested Geoffrey Portway, a Massachusetts man they say communicated with Brown over the Internet. Last week, they arrested Richard Dates of Grant, N.M, who is accused of communicating with Portway.

Altogether, authorities have arrested 46 suspects worldwide, including 15 in the United States, as part of Operation Holitna, named for an Alaskan river with tendrils that curl off in numerous directions. Authorities say they have rescued more than 150 children victimized by the network.

“This operation just keeps branching off in so many different areas,” said Bruce Foucart, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston, where the operation began.

Brown is actually the second Tampa-area man arrested in the operation. In May, Joshua Taylor, 29, of St. Petersburg, pleaded guilty to distribution of child pornography. Officials said Taylor told an undercover investigator in an online chat that he abused a 4-year-old child.

Agents searching Taylor’s belongings found thousands of child pornography images, including many depicting sadistic and masochistic conduct and many involving infants and toddlers, according to Taylor’s plea agreement. Taylor is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

Foucart said the investigation continues to grow.

“I wouldn’t say infancy,” he said. “We’re just starting to chug along. We anticipate this to go on for several years. It may never end. … Every time we make an arrest, every time we conduct a search warrant, we find new leads. I liken it to peeling back an onion, only the onion keeps getting bigger.”

Investigators who searched Brown’s home found images of child pornography, children in bondage and children who appear deceased, according to a complaint affidavit. The images were on his computer and on a CD in his sock drawer. He told agents he talks with people online about strangling children and is part of a “strangle group” on Yahoo.

“Brown stated that these are his fantasies and told agents he would never really do this,” the complaint states.

So far, investigators have not been able to say whether they have evidence showing Brown actually abused children.

Brown’s proximity to children in the community created a heightened sense of urgency for investigators, said Sue McCormick, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations Tampa.

“It is especially disconcerting when we find child predators who are child care providers, teachers, and in this case, a puppeteer at the local church,” she said. “Children look up to them. They trust them.”

Although it’s still unknown whether Brown molested any children, Foucart said a majority of suspects arrested in this operation have been involved in not only viewing child pornography, but producing it.

Foucart said he’s never before seen child pornographers who were also cannibalistic.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “I’ve been in law enforcement for 27 years, and you think you’ve seen it all, and then something surprises you.”

A 2008 study of federal inmates jailed on child pornography charges found the overwhelming majority of those who volunteered for sex offender treatment eventually admitted having sexual contact with children. When including those who failed lie detector tests, about 98 percent of the study subjects were found to have a history of sexual contact with children. When they were sentenced, though, most of them denied physically abusing children.
