Identity Theft GM Warns 883 Employees and Retirees

General Motors warned 883 active and retired employees that they should guard against possible identity theft after a worker downloaded some of their personal information before retiring in May.

The employee “copied two electronic spreadsheets containing names and social security numbers” shortly before quitting, GM told the affected employees in a letter.

“GM Security confirmed that the personal information was deleted on the former employee’s computer,” wrote John Quattrone, GM’s executive director for global product development human resources. “We believe that no further copies of such data were made or distributed to other persons, though we cannot be certain of this.”

The automaker recommended that affected employees guard against possible identity theft by activating a free “fraud alert” with the three major credit reporting agencies: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.

“GM has completed an investigation of this incident and is contacting the affected individuals to inform them of precautionary steps they can take to protect against possible identity fraud,” the company said in a statement. “No cases of fraud have been reported related to this incident.”

It was not clear whether the retired employee had any malicious intent. GM did not release the person’s name.

Missing Person Raymon Roth Found Vacationing in Florida

The wife of a Massapequa, N.Y., man who was reported missing in waters off a Long Island beach and turned up five days later in South Carolina, said she had reason to suspect that her husband was up to no good.

Evana Roth, whose husband, Raymond Roth, 47, was reported missing after he allegedly went swimming at Jones Beach on Saturday in unprotected waters and never returned to shore, said that she felt “anger and sadness” when she heard her husband had been vacationing in Florida and had not drowned.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“I was planning a funeral for him,” she said during a press conference at her lawyer’s office on Friday.

Evana Roth’s attorney, Leonard Leeds, spilled out a bag of Roth’s belongings that he had reportedly left at the beach on the day of his disappearance, including his shoes, cell phone, keys, and wallet, with his license noticeably absent.

According to ABC affiliate WABC, Roth allegedly took out extra life insurance, and took his wife off as the executor of his will months earlier, which led Evana Roth to believe her husband had been planning to stage his own death.

Roth’s 22-year-old son, Jonathan, called 911 at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday to tell police that his father had gone into the water at Jones Beach’s Field 6 and did not return. Roth allegedly went swimming 750 feet east of the closest lifeguard, said Det. Sgt. Thomas Duignan of the state park police, who responded to the scene.

Duignan said the Nassau County police marine/aviation bureau, the town of Hempstead Bay Constables, the Wantagh Fire Department, and the coast guard responded to the scene to search for Roth. The costly search went on for days, he said.
PHOTO: Raymond Roth, 47, was reported missing in waters off Long Island and then found alive and well in South Carolina.

Duignan said at the time of the search, Jonathan Roth seemed distraught. His wife, who was not at the beach with her husband and son at the time, was very upset, he said.

It wasn’t until Thursday morning that Roth was found in South Carolina after spending time in Florida. Duignan said Roth was stopped by an officer on I-95 for speeding.

“The officer ran his license and noticed that he was listed as a missing person and contacted us,” he said. “He told the officer he was on his way back to New York.”

Duignan said he believes Roth has now returned to New York and is staying with his brother.

Duignan said the state park police executed a warrant Thursday evening and seized two computers from Roth’s home. He said the state park police plan to take a third computer from the home sometime today.

“We’re trying to see if there’s any evidence of him planning this, to see what transpired before Saturday the 28,” Duignan said.

Duignan said Evana Roth released emails her husband had sent her step-son to the New York Post. According to the New York Post, Roth allegedly instructed his son to speak with relatives to make sure he presented them with a new copy of Roth’s will.

Roth allegedly emailed his son that he needed to check in with him on Saturday — the day of his disappearance — and told him to call him at 8 p.m. at a resort in Florida, WABC said.

Jonathan Roth was also allegedly told by his father to make sure his mother wouldn’t “give the house away,” which was for sale, the New York Post said.

“We don’t believe [Evana Roth] had anything to do with this,” Duignan said. “I can’t comment on the son’s involvement.”

Duignan said Roth lost his job as a computer manager at Level 3 Communications in New York City on July 20.

A spokesman for Level 3 Communications declined to comment on Roth.

“The Nassau County District Attorney’s office is collaborating with police investigating this matter. The investigation is ongoing and no decision has been made as to whether criminal charges will be filed,” said spokesman John Byrne.

Duignan said that the while charges had not been filed against Roth as of this morning, “we do believe it will culminate in his arrest.”

Drug Dog Sweep Turns up 300 lbs of Pot

KEARNEY — More than 300 pounds of marijuana were seized during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 Wednesday.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, a trooper stopped an eastbound 2012 Chevy Traverse for failure to signal near the Shelton exit on I-80 at 12:30 p.m.

A State Patrol canine indicted the odor of drugs coming from the vehicle and a search led to the seizure of 330 pounds of marijuana packaged in seven duffel bags in the cargo area of the vehicle.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

The driver, James Villa, 42, and a passenger, Brenda C. Noriega, 23, both of Tucson, Ariz., each are charged with one count of intent to deliver a controlled substance, a Class III felony with a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Villa and Noriega are being held in Buffalo County Jail on 10 percent of $100,000 bond.

Troopers take 360 pounds of pot off Nebraska streets

The Nebraska State Patrol said separate traffic stops on Wednesday took a total of 360 pounds of marijuana off the street, literally.

Troopers found 330 pounds of marijuana in the cargo area of a Chevy Traverse driven by an Arizona man passing through Buffalo County. A Michigan man in Hamilton County was traveling with 30 pounds of marijuana strapped to the luggage rack of a Cadillac Escalade, troopers said.

Both men were traveling east on Interstate 80 toward Omaha.

Troopers said four people were arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver in connection with the two drug busts.

Missing Person Jeffrey Powell Possible Dead

A case that began as a missing person report turns into a murder investigation.

Jeffrey Powell was reported as a missing person on Wednesday, August 1. According to Lt. Scott Siemsen, the investigation led detectives to believe he may have been a victim of foul play.

The Salina Police Department and the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, who have been working jointly on the case say evidence points to a possible crime scene in a rural location east of the Salina city limits on E. North St.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

As the case moved forward, evidence convinced authorities that Powell was indeed a victim of foul play and is more than likely deceased. Powell was last seen with 29 year old Kyle Andrew Nelson of Salina, who was taken into custody at 11 p.m. on Thursday, August 2 and charged with second degree murder.

Nelson had been in the Lincoln County jail for other charges unrelated to this incident. He is currently being held in the Saline County Jail.

Powell’s murder is believed to be connected with an early morning shooting on Wednesday, August 1 near Iron and Connecticut. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Salina Police Department, Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Saline County Attorney are all working on the case and say the investigation is ongoing. The authorities are actively looking for the body.

Police are asking anyone who has any information, to contact the Salina Police Department at 785-826-7210, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office at 785-826-6500, or Crimestoppers at 785-825-TIPS.

Wrongful Death Deanna Ballman in National Guard

WESTERVILLE —

Central Ohio authorities say their investigation into a pregnant woman’s death led them to a home about 3 miles from where the body was found in a car along a country road.

They didn’t indicate Thursday whether they found anything linked to the case of 23-year-old Deanna Ballman.

Her body was found Wednesday northeast of Columbus. She lived in nearby Pataskala and had been reported missing Tuesday.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Relatives said Ballman had gone to do a house-cleaning job she found through an online classified ad. Her mother said Ballman called Tuesday and said she wasn’t feeling well, and then the call was dropped.

The Colorado Army National Guard on Thursday identified Ballman as a supply specialist with the 220th Military Police and said she was transferring to an Ohio unit.

KENNESAW — Richard Masters, 56, of Kennesaw is still missing after his brother reported his disappearance on July 21, Rabun County Officer John Crane said. Private Detective Police Search for Man who Robbed Couple

Police continue to search for a man who robbed a couple at Woodland Park Thursday night.

Police say the victims were sitting on the bleachers at a softball field around 10:30 p.m. when a man on a bike rode up and pointed a small silver handgun at them. The suspect demanded their belongings and made off with a cell phone, wallet and cigarettes. The robber rode off toward Clay Avenue.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

Police say they did not try to track the suspect with a K9 due to the heavy foot-traffic through the area.

Investigators did not get a good description of the robber other than he was a black male.

Wrongful Death Georgia Businessman’s Widow Charged

DECATUR, Ga. – The widow of a businessman gunned down outside a suburban Atlanta preschool was charged in the slaying Thursday, accused of conspiring with the gunman who was convicted four months ago.

Andrea Sneiderman, 36, was charged with malice murder, criminal attempt to commit murder, racketeering, perjury and insurance fraud, DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The prosecutor declined to answer questions about the evidence, but the 19-page indictment alleged Sneiderman conspired with the gunman, Hemy Neuman, who was her boss at the time of the slaying. The indictment alleged Sneiderman and Neuman were having an affair and conspired to kill her husband, Russell Sneiderman.

“Neuman and Andrea Sneiderman conspired together to murder Rusty Sneiderman so that they could enjoy a life together, eliminate Neuman’s debt problems and fully benefit from the assets the Sneidermans had acquired as well as the proceeds of Rusty Sneiderman’s life insurance policies,” the indictment said.

The indictment also alleged Andrea Sneiderman gave Neuman her husband’s schedule “so that Neuman could kill Rusty Sneiderman.”

Sneiderman’s attorneys issued a statement reiterating her innocence and promising a vigorous defense “to ensure that Andrea is fully exonerated of these false accusations.” Her attorneys include J. Tom Morgan, who spent 12 years as the DeKalb County district attorney.

The Sneiderman family said in a statement that Thursday’s arrest brought no joy but called it “another important step in pursuit of justice for Rusty.”

Prosecutors said they presented a case to a grand jury at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, and jurors returned the indictment less than two hours later.

When asked why prosecutors were pursuing the case now, the district attorney said: “Now is because we are ready now. If we were ready three months ago, it would have been three months ago. If it was last year when we charged Mr. Neuman, it would have been then.”

Sneiderman was arrested at a home in Putnam County and was being held without bond. Details of an initial court appearance were not immediately available.

Earlier, WSB-TV aired footage of Sneiderman dressed in khaki shorts and a long-sleeve shirt surrounded by law enforcement officials as she left the house, was handcuffed and placed in a patrol car.

During Neuman’s trial, prosecutors suggested Andrea Sneiderman was a “co-conspirator” in the slaying, goading a love-struck Neuman into killing her husband, perhaps for a $2 million life insurance policy. Andrea Sneiderman repeatedly denied an affair and denied knowing anything about the shooting.

After the trial, Neuman’s defense attorneys and Russell Sneiderman’s family said they hoped that prosecutors would investigate Andrea Sneiderman in the killing.

At the time, Russell Sneiderman’s brother, Steve, said the family long suspected Andrea was involved in his death, and the trial only confirmed their suspicions.

Accident Reconstruction Woman Killed as Double-Decker Bus

A passenger bus traveling from Chicago to St. Louis plowed into a bridge support Thursday on a southern Illinois interstate, killing one person and injuring 33 others, several of them critically, police said.

Thirty ambulances and five emergency helicopters responded to the scene on Interstate 55 a few miles north of Litchfield, in Montgomery County south of the capital, Springfield, said Illinois State Trooper Doug Francis.

http://liarcatchers.com/accident_reconstruction.html

Illinois State Police told NBC station KSDK-TV of St. Louis that a woman seated above the driver on the second floor of the bus was killed. KSDK identified her as 25-year-old Aditi Avhad of India. She was on her way to Columbia, Missouri, the station reported. State police weren’t able to provide precise information of the seriousness of people’s injuries, saying in a statement only that “several” were critically injured.

The driver of the bus was taken to a hospital for surgery, but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, a statement from the Illinois State Police said.

The bus, a double-decker express operated by the budget intercity service Megabus, was running from Chicago to St. Louis, the company told NBC News. It said 81 tickets had been sold for the trip, but police said the bus’ manifest showed only 64 passengers. The discrepancy couldn’t immediately be explained.

Police said they believed a tire blew out before the bus rammed into the concrete pillar. Video from KSDK showed that it sustained extensive damage.
