Missing Persons Iowa Girls Considered Abduction

Authorities in Iowa now say they have classified the case of two young cousins, missing from their homes for a week, as an abduction. The girls, Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook, were last seen riding their bikes near a lake in this small town. A $50,000 reward is now being offered for information that would lead to their being found.

An FBI dive squad with sonar equipment today searched Meyers Lake, near where the girls’ bikes were found on a nature trail. Officials said that they only continued to search the lake to be “100 percent” certain the girls were not in it. The girls’ families have been adamant that they believe the girls are somewhere else.

“The girls aren’t in the lake. We’ve all been convinced of that basically since Friday,” Craig Ceilley, a family spokesman, told ABC News today. Lyric Cook is 10; Elizabeth Collins is 8.

As the mystery grows about the cousins’ disappearance, so does the list of questions surrounding Lyric’s parents, Misty and Dan Morrissey. Both have been convicted of felony drug offenses and spent time behind bars. Misty served four years in federal prison.

Even their relatives acknowledge that the couple’s troubled past could have played a role in the girls’ disappearance.

“I can’t rule that out, you know,” Tammy Brousseau, the girls’ aunt, told ABC News Thursday. “I want every stone unturned.”

In the past week investigators have questioned both Misty and Dan several times. Brousseau said Dan at one point left a police interview because he felt he was being treated like a suspect.

“I can see Dan becoming very defensive after he’s being told, you know, ‘You killed your daughter and niece. You know you did. We have proof. We have evidence that you did this.'”

Brousseau said the Morrisseys, who are separated, have a violent past that even involves a restraining order.

“At one point Dan had assaulted Misty and that’s where the no-contact order came into place,” she said.

On Wednesday night investigators went to a nearby hotel where Misty and Dan were staying, but Dan claimed he was tired and wanted to go to sleep. The following morning Misty took a urine analysis and a polygraph test. However, Brousseau said the pair had been advised by their attorney not to speak any further to police or the media or submit to any more polygraph tests.

Rick Abben, the spokesman for the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, said Thursday that their silence was not helpful to investigators.

“It’s a distraction for us, and why they wish to do that, I don’t know,” Abben told reporters. “We’re asking for 100 percent cooperation. Why they don’t want to do that, I have no idea.”

Late Thursday Misty and Dan were spotted leaving the authorities’ makeshift command center in Evansdale, with Misty in tears.

“They have no idea about anything,” Misty yelled as she left the building.

“Back off,” said Dan as reporters gathered around them.

With the search for the girls now a week old, family members want the focus to be on the two cousins, not Lyric’s parents.

“Let’s focus on Elizabeth and Lyric. Let’s leave the past where it belongs,” Ceilley urged Friday.

If one family member is getting roughed up, he said, “they’re all getting roughed up.”

Private Detective Knox County Daycare Owner Arrested

A Knox County daycare owner has been arrested, charged with several counts of criminal abuse, after police say five children were found blocked in the daycare’s attic, alongside some hot and dangerous conditions.

‘Great Start Educational Center’ looks just like your average daycare from the outside. Childrens toys are scattered all around the building on Allison Avenue in Barbourville. But according to police, it’s not a licensed childcare facility and it is the site of some pretty horrific child abuse.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

“We expected at some point that they would be closed down, but I never in my life dreamed they would endanger any children,” said Gera Jones, who lives right next door to the daycare.

Jones was shocked to hear the disturbing allegations against the owner and operator of the childcare center, Larinda Tuttle, 38.

Police said it was Friday afternoon, when 5 kids between the ages of 5 and 7 were found blocked inside the attic. The temperature inside was more than 102 degrees, and that was after officers opened the windows. Police also said the attic was only partially floored and had exposed nails and wires, even broken glass.

“I am thinking these people are insane and they should probably be locked up. They should not be in any way in charge of children,” said Jones.

The daycare had apparently been told to shut its doors after officers said they discovered it was operating without a license. When investigators with the Office of Inspector General showed up Friday afternoon to do a follow-up, police said, those investigators found the five kids in the attic with no way out.

“I cannot imagine what those children have been through. I don’t even want to imagine,” said Jones.

Police said all of the children appeared to be OK, but the parents were advised to have the children checked out by medical professionals.

Larinda Tuttle declined LEX 18’s request for an interview from the Knox County Jail. She faces five counts of criminal abuse and more charges are possible.

Wrongful Death Headless Bodies Identitied

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — A 39-year-old man was in custody Friday in connection with the deaths of a Detroit-area couple who were fatally shot, dismembered and discovered miles away in and near the Detroit River, police said.

Police refused to say if the suspect was the same man who recently moved in with the victims, 42-year-old Chris Hall and fiancee Danielle Greenway, 32. That man was picked up at the house by police Thursday, neighbors said.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Charges likely are the next step, said Allen Park Police Chief James Wilkewitz, who called the deaths “heinous” and not a random act. The suspect’s name was not released.

Two bodies with no feet, heads or hands were found Tuesday in the Detroit River and a canal that feeds the river, a mile-wide body of water that separates Detroit from Windsor, Ontario. A circular saw and a suitcase were also discovered. Relatives of the victims reported them missing Wednesday after having no contact for at least five days.

“It makes my heart drop,” neighbor Samantha Dolliver said. “They were the sweetest people. It hasn’t hit me yet. But when it does, I’m going to barricade myself in a room with a pillow and cry. … They were human beings, not a piece of scrap metal.”

Police released few details at a news conference Friday but asked for the public’s help in locating Greenway’s van, a tan 2005 GMC Safari with Michigan license plate 7JCM9.

“We still have a lot of work left to do,” Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee said.

Meanwhile, yellow police tape was stretched around the home while a state police evidence technician, wearing gloves and foot protection, went in and out. A car and a boat were parked in the driveway.

A Greenway family friend, April Purdin, told The Associated Press that the man who was living in the home was Greenway’s ex-boyfriend. Dolliver said she knew him only as “Roger” and that he arrived about three weeks ago.

Dolliver said Hall’s sister was searching for the couple Wednesday and pounded on the couple’s door. She had no luck.

“She said she had a feeling in the pit of her stomach that something was wrong,” Dolliver said.

Dolliver’s father, Richard, also a neighbor, said Hall was an electrician and Greenway worked for a cleaning service. He last saw them about a week ago.

“She made us cookies and banana-nut bread all the time,” he said of Greenway.

Richard Dolliver said he asked Greenway about the man who moved in.

“She said he was a friend who needed help,” he recalled.

Insurance Fraud Nabeel Shaikh of Wixom, Michigan

WASHINGTON—A Michigan resident pleaded guilty today for his role in a $13.8 million Detroit-area home health care fraud scheme, announced the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services (HHS).

Nabeel Shaikh, 30, of Wixom, Michigan, pleaded guilty today to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud before U.S. District Judge Gerald E. Rosen of the Eastern District of Michigan. At sentencing, Shaikh faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

According to information contained in plea documents, Shaikh purported to be a physical therapy assistant with a limited license who provided physical therapy services to homebound Medicare beneficiaries. In fact, Shaikh had a forged physical therapy assistant’s degree and no medical license. Beginning in approximately January 2009, Shaikh was paid to falsify medical documentation for two home health agencies, known as Physicians Choice Home Health Care LLC and Quantum Home Care Inc., each of which billed and received payments from Medicare for home health care services that were never rendered.

According to court documents, Shaikh paid kickbacks and bribes to Medicare beneficiaries in order to obtain the beneficiaries’ Medicare information, which was then used to bill Medicare for home health services that were never provided. Shaikh created evaluations, therapy revisit notes, and other medical documentation memorializing purported physical therapy for patients he did not see or treat. Shaikh and his co-conspirators had Medicare beneficiaries pre-sign forms and visit sheets that were later falsified to make it appear that the beneficiaries had received home health services when, in fact, they had not. Shaikh knew that the documents that he signed would be used to support false claims to Medicare for home health services.

From approximately January 2009 through September 2011, Medicare paid approximately $900,430 to Physicians Choice and Quantum for fraudulent physical therapy claims based on falsified files and notes signed by Shaikh.

Overall, between approximately July 2008 and September 2011, Physicians Choice, Quantum, and two other fraudulent home health care agencies involved in the conspiracy, known as First Care Home Health Care LLC and Moonlite Home Care Inc., were paid approximately $13.8 million in fraudulent home health claims by the Medicare program for services that were medically unnecessary and/or never rendered.

Today’s guilty plea was announced by Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan Barbara L. McQuade, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Detroit Field Office Edward J. Hanko, and Special Agent in Charge Lamont Pugh, III of the HHS Office of Inspector General, Chicago Regional Office.

This case was prosecuted by Trial Attorney Catherine K. Dick of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section with assistance from Trial Attorney Niall M. O’Donnell. It was investigated by the FBI and HHS-OIG and was brought as part of the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, supervised by the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Since its inception in March 2007, the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, now operating in nine cities across the country, has charged more than 1,330 defendants who have collectively billed the Medicare program for more than $4 billion. In addition, HHS’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, working in conjunction with HHS-OIG, is taking steps to increase accountability and decrease the presence of fraudulent providers.

Wrongful Death Mass Shooting at Colorado Movie Theater

A lone gunman dressed in riot gear burst into a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., at a midnight showing of the Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises” and methodically began shooting patrons, killing at least 12 people and injuring at least 50.

The suspect, James Holmes, 24, of Aurora, was caught by police in the parking lot of the Century 16 Movie Theaters, nine miles outside Denver, after police began receiving dozens of 911 calls at 12:39 a.m. MT. Police said the man appeared to have acted alone.

Witnesses in the movie theater said Holmes crashed into the auditorium through an emergency exit about 30 minutes into the film, set off a smoke bomb, and began shooting. Holmes stalked the aisles of the theater, shooting people at random, as panicked movie-watchers in the packed auditorium tried to escape, witnesses said.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“You just smelled smoke and you just kept hearing it, you just heard bam bam bam, non-stop. The gunman never had to reload. Shots just kept going, kept going, kept going,” one witness told ABC News.

“I’m with coworkers and we’re on the floor praying to God we don’t get shot, and the gunshots continue on and on, and when the sound finally stopped, we started to get up and people were just bleeding,” another theatergoer said.

Photos: Shooting at ‘Dark Knight’ Screening at Colorado Movie Theater

Police said 10 victims died inside the theater, while dozens of others were taken to local hospitals, including a child as young as 6 years old.

A San Diego woman identifying herself as James Holmes’s mother spoke briefly with ABC News this morning.

She had awoken unaware of the news of the shooting and had not been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

“You have the right person,” she said.

“I need to call the police,” she added. “I need to fly out to Colorado.”

Holmes was wearing a bullet-proof vest and riot helmet and carrying a gas mask, rifle, and handgun, when he was apprehended, according to police. Holmes mentioned having explosives stored, leading police to evacuate his entire North Aurora apartment complex and search the buildings early this morning.

The highly-anticipated third installment of the Batman triology opened to packed auditoriums around the country at midnight showings on Friday morning, and features a villain named Bane who wears a bulletproof vest and gas mask. Trailers for the movie show explosions at public events including a football game. Though many moviegoers dressed in costume to attend the opening night screening, police have made no statements about any connection between the gunman’s motives and the movie.

Police in New York have intensified security around showings of the film throughout the five boroughs today, with police commissioner Ray Kelley saying that “as a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is playing.”

The Paris premiere of the movie has been cancelled in the wake of the shootings. “Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time,” the movie’s producers, said in a statement.

Witnesses watching movies in theaters next to the one where the shooting took place said bullets tore through the theater walls and they heard screaming.

“The suspect throws tear gas in the air, and as the tear gas appears he started shooting,” said Lamar Lane, who was watching the midnight showing of the movie with his brother. “It was very hard to breathe. I told my brother to take cover. It took awhile. I started seeing flashes and screaming, I just saw blood and people yelling and a quick glimpse of the guy who had a gas mask on. I was pushed out. There was chaos, we started running.”

One witness said she saw people dropping to the ground after the gunshots began.

“We were maybe 20 or 30 minutes into the movie and all you hear, first you smell smoke, everybody thought it was fireworks or something like that, and then you just see people dropping and the gunshots are constant,” witness Christ Jones told ABC’s Denver affiliate KMGH. “I heard at least 20 to 30 rounds within that minute or two.”

A man who talked to a couple who was inside the theater told ABC News, “They got up and they started to run through the emergency exit, and that when she turned around, she said all she saw was the guy slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing at people, just picking random people,” he said. “The gunshots continued to go on and on and then after we didn’t hear anything…we finally got up and there was people bleeding, there was people obviously may have been actually dead or anything, and we just ran up out of there, there was chaos everywhere.”

Witnesses and victims were taken to Gateway High School for questioning.

Hundreds of police and FBI agents are involved in the investigation. A senior official who is monitoring the situation in Washington said that early guidance based on the early snapshot of this man’s background indicated that this act does not appear to be linked to radical terrorism or anything related to Islamic terrorism.

Though police have said that they believe the shooter was acting alone, they checked all cars in the parking lot and cleared the area near the theater.

Dr. Comilla Sasson, at the University of Colorado Hospital where many of the victims were taken, said they are currently operating on nine critical patients and have treated 22 in all. She called the hospital “an absolutely terrifying scene all night.”

“The good news is that the 3-month-old has actually been discharged home and is in the care of their parents

In a statement, President Obama said, “Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded.”

A man who was in the adjacent theater with his son, said that the commotion began as one of the action scenes was starting up.

“These guys came through, and they say someone’s shooting,” he said. “I thought, ‘Oh, they must have heard the fireworks, you know … I had no idea. And then the alarms started to go off in the theater.'”

An explosive device was also found inside the movie house. Police are not sure whether the device, which investigators are calling a bomb, was already in place or whether it was thrown into the crowd.

Ambulances rushed to the scene as audience members fled the theater.

Investigators are now interviewing friends and associates of the suspect to get a sense of the man’s background.
