Private Detective Robber Strikes Again In Thornton

Police say a man was caught on camera robbing a Thornton’s gas station, but now they believe the same thief has struck again, for the second day in a row.

It happened at the Thornton’s on Versailles Road near Red Mile at about 4:20 Saturday morning. Police say a man came into the store, threatened the clerk with a knife and got away with cash.

Sources say it looks to be the same man who did the exact same thing just the day before, and also the same man who robbed a Speedway gas station on Friday as well.

Police are asking the public to take a look at the picture taken from surveillance video to help identify the person.

Police say these robberies are especially concerning because of the brazen, casual way the robber uses his knife.

Shoppers at the Thornton’s who come by at night are taking notice. “It’s scary. Because I work night shifts up at Homestead Nursing Center, so we come out and do our coffee run at 1:00 or 2:00 o’clock in the morning,” says Jocelyn Ross, a customer. “So yeah it’s scary. I’ll be more watchful when I do come out and I guess come out in groups instead of just one person going out for coffee, maybe two or three of us will come out.”

Police also say the suspect has been using a get-away car.

Private Detective Looking into Rape Claims

HAVERHILL — A 51-year-old man has been charged with raping a 10-year-old girl when he lived with her and her mother.

Police said Richard Marini, 51, of Haverhill raped the girl in 2010, when she was 10.

The girl recently revealed the rape to a doctor during a visit to a medical center, police said.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

Police said Marini was the boyfriend of the girl’s mother and was living with them when the crime occurred.

Marini was arraigned Wednesday in Haverhill District Court on charges of rape of a child with force and assault and battery on a child under 14. During the hearing, his lawyer described him as indigent, but someone posted the $7,500 cash bail that was imposed by Judge Stephen Abany.

State law calls for a maximum sentence of life in prison for someone convicted of raping a child with force. It calls for up to 10 years in state prison for assault and battery on a child under 14.

The judge approved $1,000 from the court for Marini’s court-appointed lawyer to hire a private investigator. The lawyer said that was essential for Marini’s defense.

Marini, of 1 Driscoll St., must return to court May 7 for a probable cause hearing. The judge also ordered Marini to stay out of trouble or risk being held without bail for up to 60 days, and to have no contact with the victim.

Police said the documents provided by the medical center did not identify the girl’s attacker by name, and that a full investigation was launched after the girl and her father reported the incident to police in February.

According to a police report on file in Haverhill District Court, detectives interviewed the girl in March, in the presence of an assistant district attorney and a victim witness advocate.

Police said the girl told them she was in the fourth grade when Marini came to live with her and her mother in their Haverhill apartment. She told police she had her own bedroom and that in the summer of 2010, Marini woke her and then raped her.

The girl said she did not tell her mother about the rape because Marini had hit her before, though she had not told her mother about those assaults, according to a police report. She said her mother would not have believed her. The report said the girl told police the night of the rape wasn’t the first time Marini had entered her room and touched her in sexual ways, including trying to kiss her.

Police said they interviewed Marini on Wednesday, after he agreed to come to the police station. Police said Marini told them he has been in an “on-and-off” relationship with the girl’s mother for the last four years. He said he did not have much of relationship with the girl and “does not discipline her when she acts up.”

Marini said the girl is depressed, that she does not have many friends and that her mother did much of the disciplining, according to police. He said he tried to help the girl, who he said is not a bad girl, by having his daughter talk to her and that his son gave the girl a skateboard to play with, according to police.

Police said Marini denied touching the girl, said he never entered her bedroom and that the accusations against him were being made in order to keep him and the girl’s mother apart. Police said Marini told them the girl’s father and daughter have been manipulating the girl because they want her mother to lose custody of her.

Marini said he has not seen the girl’s mother in four months but that the woman occasionally spends the night at his sister’s house, according to a police report. Marini told police he is disabled and does not work, and that the girl’s mother was also on disability at the time he lived with her.

Wrongful Death 2 month Old Killed by Dog

RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (AP) – Authorities say a 2-month-old child has been killed and dismembered by a dog in his family’s South Carolina home.
Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nesbitt says Aiden McGrew’s father was asleep and his mother wasn’t home when he was attacked around 11 a.m. Friday.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

In a news release, Nesbitt says McGrew was bitten numerous times and dismembered. He refused to answer additional questions. Deputies said earlier in the day that the baby’s leg was severed by a retriever and that his mother called 911.

Nesbitt says two other children in the home were not hurt.

The coroner says he scheduled an autopsy for Saturday to determine if the boy was dead before the dog dismembered him.

Nesbitt called it one of the worst deaths he has handled in 20 years with the coroner’s office.

Insurance Fraud Man Cuts His Hand off

One evening in May of 2008, Gerald B. Hardin and two of his friends came up with a scheme that would potentially make all three of them rich. Their idea involved defrauding multiple insurance companies with false claims, which by itself isn’t terribly original and doesn’t have a very high probability of success.

As anyone who has dealt with homeowners insurance is well aware, these guys don’t mess around. You can’t just submit a claim that says “HOLY CRAP CTHULU JUST RAN THROUGH MY HOUSE” and expect to get a payout. There needs to be physical evidence that an accident/catastrophe truly did happen (and caused you damages) that’s covered by your policy.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

But someone in this trio of masterminds (reports do not say which one) happened to have a very lucrative homeowners insurance policy. They realized that if one of them also took out multiple personal insurance policies that left him well covered in the case of accidental death or dismemberment, the payout would be enormous if one of three were to have an in home “accident.”

In what had to be the most intense game of rock/paper/scissors (or drawing straws) that has ever taken place, someone ended up losing, bought the personal insurance policy, and agreed to have their hand cut off with a pole saw.

After the screaming and massive amounts of blood subsided a bit, the man was transported to a Charlotte hospital where doctors were unsuccessful in their attempts to reattach his hand. Afterwards, the trio cashed in on the homeowners and personal insurance policies to the tune of $671,125 (most of which hopefully went to the dude that gave up an extremity).

Their insurance companies, however, were justifiably skeptical about the sequence of events and subsequent claims that were filed. Once the FBI got involved (presumably because they crossed state lines for their hospital visit), it wasn’t too long before one of the stupidest “get rich quick” schemes ever conceived was discovered and shut down.

Gerald B. Hardin was released on $100,000 bond (!) and is currently awaiting trial. His fellow conspirators have yet to be charged or identified, although one of them definitely won’t be clapping at the end of The Avengers movie when it comes out on May 4.

If convicted, Hardin faces the possibility of 20 years in jail along with a $250,000 fine.

Electronic Surveillance John Brennan Praises New Yorks Surveillance

NEW YORK — President Barack Obama’s top counterterrorism adviser praised the New York Police Department’s work Friday, saying the agency has struck an appropriate balance between keeping people safe and protecting their rights.

“It’s not a trade-off between our security and our freedoms and our rights as citizens,” John Brennan said Friday in an appearance at NYPD headquarters. “I believe that that balance that we strike has been an appropriate one. We want to make sure that we’re able to optimize our security at the same time we optimize those freedoms that we hold and cherish so deeply.”

http://liarcatchers.com/electronic_surveillance.html

The comments from the top counterterrorism official in the White House follow months of debate over an NYPD domestic intelligence operation that placed Muslim businesses, mosques and student groups under surveillance. The Associated Press revealed the details of the program in a series of articles that won the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting earlier this week.

Brennan’s comments represent a White House stamp of approval of the NYPD’s tactics. For months, the Obama administration has sidestepped questions about the NYPD surveillance programs while insisting on the importance of building partnerships with American Muslims.

Some elected officials and community advocates have accused the NYPD of infringing on Muslims’ civil rights and of illegally engaging in religious and ethnic profiling. More than 30 members of Congress demanded a federal investigation, and Attorney General Eric Holder said he was disturbed by reports about the operations. The Justice Department said Friday it was continuing to review complaints received from Muslims and their supporters.

City officials say the police department has done nothing illegal and argue the NYPD would have endangered the city it is charged with protecting if it did not take such preventative measures. Officers cannot wait to open an investigation until a crime is committed, they argue. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has said it is a mischaracterization to describe the department’s tactics as spying.

“I have full confidence that the NYPD is doing things consistent with the law, and it’s something that again has been responsible for keeping this city safe over the past decade,” Brennan said, adding that “the Muslim community here is part of the solution to the terrorist threat, and they need to be part of that effort, and that dialogue needs to continue.”

Brennan said he would be speaking with local Muslim leaders during his visit to New York and asking them to share their views.

In the speech to police department officials and representatives from private security firms, Brennan said the NYPD’s counterterrorism work was essential to the safety of the nation’s citizens.

“If we’re going to have the ability to identify and stop terrorist operatives and terrorist attacks here on our shores, the national government cannot do it alone,” he said.

He called the NYPD a “model of how a community can come together.”

“You have had a very, very difficult job. I think you’ve done it very well,” he said. “The success is in the record, in terms of keeping this city safe.”

Wrongful Death Sonsaray Warford’s Mother Speaks Out

For the first time since Sonsaray Warford and Charles Walker were found murdered in a Madison County field in an alleged murder-for-hire plot after being missing for two years, Sonsaray’s mother, Roslyn Martin, is speaking on camera about her loss.

When Martin looks at her grandsons Deshawn and Antwaun Warford she sees her daughter Sonsaray, especially in Deshawn.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“I sit back and just look at him sometimes, and he acts like her sometimes. Sonsaray was real funny; she’d joke at you, you know, keep you laughing,” says Martin.

Sonsaray’s mom says family was most important to her daughter. She used to cook big dinners for family and friends, everything from ribs to baked lasagna.

“She cooked for groups of people and she never rejected anybody,” says Anthony Martin, Sonsaray’s uncle.

Sonsaray even worked as a cook, until she had a back injury. That’s when she decided to go to school to be a nurse. That’s what she was working towards shortly before she disappeared June 2010. Since then, Martin and her family have been living a nightmare. For two years, they didn’t know where Sonsaray was. Then in late March, Richmond Police said they found remains belonging to Sonsaray and Charles Walker in a field along Tates Creek Road in Madison County. Police then charged two army veterans from Madison County, Matthew Denholm and Daniel Keene, with the couple’s kidnapping and murder. According to a police affidavit, a hit had been put out on Charles. The affidavit said Sonsaray was kidnapped only because she happened to be with him. Martin had unknowingly passed the field numerous times with her church group.

“I was coming down there one night before they found them, and it’s like a bright light hit me, and I thought ‘what’s that'” says Martin.

Sonsaray’s mother says she’s leaning on her faith to get through.

“I know where she is today, because she knew God. And I told her if anything ever comes up against you Sonsaray you call to the name of God, and she was doing that,” says Martin. “I want justice served. Because they didn’t have to take her, but they did. They killed an honest person in this. And I pray about the matter because I am a Christian, but it’s hard when someone takes your own child.”

As Sonsaray’s children excel in football, her pit bull puppy that she loved, named Precious, stays with her mother. It’s the precious memories of her daughter, that keep Roslyn Martin strong.

Missing Persons Michael Heydary Found

NORTHBRIDGE —

A Whitinsville man who went missing on Tuesday was found today at 1:30 p.m. in Putnam, Conn. walking on Rte. 44.

At 12:41 p.m. Northbridge Police got a tip from an unidentified man in Woodstock, Conn. who said he saw a man fitting 31-year-old Michael Heydary’s description walking in the Dudley and Oxford area yesterday.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The same witness told police he saw that man, who turned out to be Heydary, walking in Putnam today.

Northbridge Police Dispatcher Lisa Gaylord contacted Connecticut State Police in Danielson. Connecticut State Trooper Melissa Brezniak made contact with Heydary, who was then transported to Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam for evaluation.

It is unclear why Heydary left his home on foot with no supplies, or where he was going, police said.

Police said they took Heydary’s parents Benjami and Suhaila Heydary to the hospital to see their son.

Police have been searching for Heydary, of 576 Samuel Drive, since 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, when his parents reported him missing from their home in the Whitinsville section of Northbridge.

After notifying the media with a press release, police said they would not answer any further questions regarding the situation.

The search included cadaver dogs and dozens of Northbridge and state police and fire officials who scoured the waters and woods around his home by foot, ATV and chopper.

Police did not say what condition Heydary was in when discovered in Putnam, or whether he had walked there from Whitinsville.
Police also did not say how the man who tipped off police knew that Heydary was missing.

Fraud Investigation Online Property Rentals

The IC3 continues to receive complaints regarding rental property scams from victims and real estate agencies. Several real estate agencies reported that their listings are being duplicated to perpetrate fraudulent online postings. These postings have been damaging to their companies reputations. These complaints make it evident that there are many who capitalize on people are looking to rent property and attempt to take advantage of those individuals, especially when they are in pressing situations in which they need to find a residence within a short amount of time.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Below are some scenarios of the scheme recently reported to the IC3:

A fraudster posted rental property online. When the prospective renter inquired about the property via e-mail, the fraudster requested detailed personal information, as well as a security deposit of $1000 to hold the home. Payment, in the form of a money order, was requested because of the “online scams.” After the deposit was received, the fraudster claimed that he mailed the keys and lease agreement for a hard copy to be signed. Later, the victim received an e-mail from an individual posing as the fraudster’s “lawyer” stating a hold had been placed on the package containing the key until the full amount of the first and last month’s rent is paid. The victim realized it was a scam after they contacted the realtor who advised the home had been foreclosed.
Another victim also responded via e-mail to an online post advertising a house for rent. The victim was asked to submit an online credit report. The fraudster then provided a link in his e-mail, allowing the victim’s credit report information to be directly accessible to him.
A complainant had inquired about a condo rental advertised online. The complainant was advised to go to the condo and call the fraudster so he could meet her with the keys. Upon placing the call, no one answered. Later, the fraudster provided the complainant an excuse for not being available and requested the deposit be made through an online payment service. After the deposit was made, the complainant realized it was a scam and contacted the online payment service. Upon an investigation, the receiver of the deposit advised they had been defrauded as well and was only acting as the “pay agent” for the true fraudster.
