Wrongful Death 2 USC Students Killed

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Two USC students were murdered Wednesday morning in what may have been an attempted carjacking in front of a home in the West Adams area.

Officials say the victims, Ying Wu and Ming Qu, were sitting in a BMW in the 2700 block of Raymond Avenue with hazard lights on when they were approached by an armed man at 1 a.m., according to KNX 1070′s John Brooks.

Qu was shot twice in the head.

“He exited the car and went up onto one of the porches of a nearby house, asking for help, and our officers arrived and found him there,” Commander Andy Smith said.

Wu was also shot.

Both victims, who have been identified as graduate students from China, were declared dead at California Hospital.

Police hope to examine nearby surveillance video to identify the suspect.

While officials say it was too dark to get a good description of the shooter, there were several witnesses who said the shooter drove away in a dark-colored vehicle. However, police have not confirmed if the gunman fled on foot or by car.

Crime has dropped in the LAPD’s Southwest Division, which includes the USC campus. Only four murders have been reported since the beginning of the year.

Fraud Investigation Vote Buying

LEXINGTON—A federal jury sitting in Lexington convicted two Eastern Kentuckians for buying votes in the May 2010 primary election in Breathitt County.

The jury convicted Naomi Johnson, 61, and Earl Young, 44, of conspiring to buy votes and one count each of vote buying. The verdict was returned following two and a half days of trial and approximately three and a half hours of deliberation.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Another co-defendant, Jackie Jennings, 61, pleaded guilty to two vote buying counts and a conspiracy charge during the first day of the trial.

Evidence at trial proved that the three defendants conspired to buy votes for Michael Salyers, a candidate for county magistrate.

Testimony proved that Salyers was provided hundreds of dollars to pay individuals to cast their votes for him by absentee ballot. Evidence showed that the defendants traveled with voters to the courthouse. Young and Jennings verified that the voters voted. Voters were paid after informing Salyers they voted for him. One witness testified that he was paid $25.

Salyers pleaded guilty to the vote buying conspiracy in February.

Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Perrye Turner, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI; and Jack Smith, Chief of the Public Integrity Division at the Department of Justice, jointly made the announcement today.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI. The U.S. Attorney’s Office was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ken Taylor and Richard B. Evans with the Public Integrity Division.

Jennings, Johnson, and Young will appear in federal court for their sentences on July 26. Salyers will be sentenced on May 23. Each defendant faces up to five years in prison.

Drug Dog Finds Marijuana in Hoskin’s Underwear

A Waldorf, Md., man is facing drug charges for allegedly selling marijuana out of an ice cream truck, the Associated Press reports.

Charles County sheriff’s deputies stopped the truck, operated by 20-year-old Alexander Hoskins, at the intersection of Bayswater Court and Sheffield Circle after receiving a tip through Crime Solvers on March 30.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

With the help of a drug-detection dog, deputies found bags of marijuana and cash hidden in Hoskins’s underwear, the AP reported.

Authorities believe Hoskins had been selling the drugs to teenagers and young adults. He was also legitimately selling ice cream out of the truck.

Hoskins was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and released on bond.

Missing Persons Amy Pilkington’s Three Kids Never Returned from Fathers

A Pulaski County mother says it’s been two weeks since she’s seen or talked to her three children. Amy Nichole Pilkington says they spent spring break with their father who, she says, has stopped answering her phone calls.

Amy Nichole and William Pilkington have been separated for a couple of years and share custody of the two teenagers and five-year-old girl. There’s no Amber Alert because Somerset Police don’t have proof the kids are in danger, but Amy Nichole worries William has no plan to come home.

Bekkah Pilkington is 14-years-old, her brother Trey is a year younger and Lily is five.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“She’s so cute and she’s ready to grow up and I’m like no, don’t grow up and she’s like, I have to, I drink my milk,” said Amy Nichole about Lily.

Amy Nichole thinks about the good times because she says what has happened to the three siblings could be anything but because, as she puts it, her ex knows to “live off the grid”.

“I think he would just be wherever he thinks he would not be noticed,” said Amy Nichole.

The four of them have been gone since March 30 when, according to the couple’s custody agreement, William picked them up, but never brought them back Sunday, April 8th, when Amy Nichole says he was supposed to.

“They said his phone had been disconnected and then I knew immediately that something was off,” said Amy Nichole.

On Facebook, the worried mother pleaded for her kid’s safe return. Then Tuesday, she filed a missing person’s report, but Police say there’s no proof these children are in danger.

“Two of the main things we need in order to issue an Amber Alert is evidence of an abduction and also some form of tangible evidence that the children are in risk of serious injury or death and that’s just not the case at this point,” said Somerset Police Lt. Shannon Smith.

State Police are also involved and have checked Adair and Metcalf counties – two places in Kentucky William had ties to. Otherwise, Amy Nichole says she fears William may have gone somewhere out west.

If you know anything, call your local police agency. Tips can remain anonymous.

Wrongful Death George Zimmerman Arrested

George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain who admits he shot unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, was charged with murder today and has been taken into custody.

The charge of second degree murder was announced by Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey at a news conference this evening.

If convicted of the charges Zimmerman could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“We have to have a reasonable certainty of conviction before filing charges,” the prosecutor said. A bond hearing will be held Thursday when Zimmerman can apply for bail, she said.

Zimmerman arrived at the Seminole County Jail in a motorcade of black SUVs, armed agents with automatic weapons guarding him at about 8:24 p.m.

Zimmerman went into the jail wearing what appeared to be a windbreaker or jacket over his head.

He will undergo a medical screening process and then county officials will evaluate whether or not he will go into general population.

Mark O’Mara, Zimmerman’s new lawyer, said this evening that he intended to seek his release at Thursday’s hearing and said that he spoke briefly with Zimmerman.

“He’s troubled by the fact that the state decided to charge him,” O’Mara said.

The lawyer also said Zimmerman is scared.

“I think anyone who is charged with second degree murder would be scared. Yes, he’s frightened,” O’Mara said.

Zimmerman, 28, a white Hispanic neighborhood watch captain, shot and killed Martin, who was 17 and black, on Feb. 26 after following the teenager for several minutes.

Corey opened her news conference by saying that she had spoken with Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, when she took over the case last month and “we told those sweet parents” that they would get answers.

She also worried that the “overwhelming amount of publicity in this case” could complicate efforts to get an impartial jury, adding that there was “so much information on this case that was released that shouldn’t have been released.”

Martin’s parents said at a news conference this evening that were grateful that Zimmerman has been arrested.

“We simply wanted an arrest,” Sybrina Fulton said. “We got it and we say thank you, Lord. Thank you, Jesus.”

Tracy Martin said, however, “This is just the beginning. We have a long way to go.. and we will march and march and march until the right thing is done.”

O’Mara said that the case has become emotionally charged and that his client “is concerned about getting a fair trial. We need to calm this down and it needs to be tried in a courtroom.”

He also said he is worried about Zimmerman’s safety.

“If he was walking down the street right now he would be at risk,” O’Mara said. “I’m hoping we can keep him safe.”

He added, “He is a client who has a lot of hatred focused on him.”

The charges are certain to provoke controversy in Sanford, Fla., where the shooting took place, and across the country.

Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett held a news conference this evening to ask for “continued calm in the city of Sanford, surrounding areas and across the nation.”

Earlier this week, Tripllett said his city has become a “kindling box” due to the high emotions surrounding the case, and that he would “plan for the worst and hope for the best.”

He also said that he had faith in the Sanford police department although it had declined to arrest Zimmerman after the shooting.

The case gained national prominence with rallies across the country demanding that Zimmerman be arrested and charged with murder. Zimmerman and his supporters say that the shooting had nothing to do with race and that he shot Martin in self-defense.

The U.S. Justice Department is also carrying out an investigation into the shooting.

Attorney General Eric Holder indicate today that the feds will have a higher bar to establish that the shooting was a hate crime.

“For a federal hate crime we have to prove the highest standard in the law it is something that was reckless, that was negligent… We have to show that there was a specific intent to do the crime with the requisite state of mind,” Holder said.

The city of Sanford has been getting increasingly tense as the decision neared. Six shots were fired into an empty police cruiser earlier this week in the neighborhood where Martin was killed.

The New Black Panther Party offered a $10,000 bounty for Zimmerman and his lawyers said Zimmerman had received death threats.

The New Socialist Movement, a white supremacy group, said they were patrol Sanford to protect whites and racists comments about the shooting have sprung up on social media sites.

Debate over the shooting became so widespread that even President Obama commented, saying if he had a son he would have looked like Trayvon Martin.

On his website, Zimmerman released a statement about the shooting this week, calling the incident a “life-altering event.”

“As a result of the incident and subsequent media coverage, I have been forced to leave my home, my school, my employer, my family and ultimately my entire life,” he wrote.

In a written statement to police on the night of the shooting, Zimmerman said that he’d called 911 to report a suspicious man and that as he returned to his car, Martin attacked him. Zimmerman said that Martin punched him in the nose and knocked him down, slammed his head on the ground and tried to take his gun.

The police report noted that Zimmerman was bleeding from the back of the head and nose. His lawyer said later that Zimmerman suffered a broken nose.

After Zimmerman received medical attention, it was decided that he was in good enough condition to travel in a police cruiser to the Sanford police station for questioning. He was not arrested.

Drug Dog Sweep Dawn Miller

RUMFORD, Maine — During an ongoing investigation into the illegal sale of Oxycodone in the area, Maine Drug Enforcement agents on Friday afternoon arrested a Rumford woman on cocaine trafficking.

Dawn M. Miller, 36, of 818 Hillside Ave. in Rumford’s Virginia neighborhood, was charged with aggravated trafficking in cocaine and violating conditions of release, Matt Cashman, MDEA supervisor special agent, said Tuesday afternoon in Lewiston. Rumford police were assisted by a Maine State Police drug-detection dog, he said.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

Unable to post $2,500 cash bail, Miller was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris. She will be arraigned on the Class A felony on July 3 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.

Cashman said the aggravating factor stems from Miller’s home being within 1,000 feet of the Pennacook Learning Center at Virginia Elementary School.

Armed with a search warrant, agents found and seized a quantity of drugs, including prepackaged cocaine and prescription medications, Cashman said.

Bulk currency and other items consistent with drug trafficking were also found and seized, he said. Additionally, agents located the remnants of a marijuana cultivation operation, he said.

Miller had been free on bail and awaiting trial on June 5 in 11th District Court in Rumford. On Feb. 26 in Roxbury, Trooper Paul Casey arrested Miller on a charge of criminal speed, a court clerk said Tuesday.

Cashman said one of the conditions of release was that Miller commit no further crime.

Additional arrests related to the MDEA investigation into the trafficking of Oxycodone, a narcotic painkiller, are expected, he said.

Wrongful Death Mike Cavanaugh

A Detroit man is brutally killed at the park he loved and cared for. His heartbroken family wants justice for this callous crime.

Mike Cavanaugh loved Stoepel Park. There was a weeping willow tree he would sit under to take a nap. He would also listen to gospel music on his portable radio under the same tree. Sadly, that is also the place where he was brutally murdered in broad daylight.

“Just how much I really loved him, appreciated him,” said Kathy Johnson.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

That is what the victim’s sister would say if she could talk to her brother one more time. He left their house Monday after lunch to clean up Stoepel Park and take a nap. However, less than an hour after lunch Cavanaugh was dead.

“There’s nothing he could’ve done to somebody that could’ve made someone that angry, and I would like to know why,” Johnson said.

Cavanaugh was shot three times at the park, once in the head and again in the stomach.

Cavanaugh did not work, but his sister said he still had a very important job.

“He loved going to the park. He looked at it as being his home. He very much so cleaned it up all the time and was very angry with people that didn’t clean things up,” Johnson explained.

This is not the first time Cavanaugh was attacked by complete strangers. Ten years ago, he was jumped at a bus stop. He was in a coma for weeks and had permanent, severe brain damage.

Right now, police have few leads, but Johnson said she knows someone knows something.

“Please, we all have family members. We all have people that we love,” she said. “Please, please say something. Don’t just put a blind eye to it. Please speak up.”

Most people thought Cavanaugh was homeless because he slept in the park for hours and his brain injuries made him hard to understand, but Johnson said her brother had a heart of gold.

“He cared about Detroit and the neighborhood. He loved the Detroit Tigers, the Red Wings. He was a sports fan. He cared about people. He was a God loving person. He looked out for a lot of people. Loved animals. That’s who Mike was,” she told us. “I really would like to see the person that did this get caught and take responsibility, for it’s not going to bring my brother back, but it sure would help.”

Identity Theft Julia Herzog

CENTERVILLE — A woman who is wanted by multiple jurisdictions along the Wasatch Front is now behind bars.

Julia Herzog, 41, also known as Julia Amelia Higbee, was arrested by Unified Police on Saturday and booked in Salt Lake County Jail for driving under the influence, Centerville Police Lt. Paul Child said.

Herzog was placed on Centerville’s most-wanted list in February after she failed to show up for a sentencing hearing in 2nd District Court, Centerville Detective Jake Alexander said.

Alexander is the lead investigator on the Herzog case.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

According to the court website, under the names of Herzog and Higbee, there are 34 felony cases, in several counties, filed against her in 1st, 2nd and 3rd district courts since 1999.

Alexander said Herzog steals credit cards, driver’s licenses, checks and anything else that may have personal information on it out of cars.

“A lot of cars have been broken into, or forced into, while some were unlocked,” Alexander said.

If Herzog gets a credit card, she takes it to a store and “uses it as fast as she can before it gets declined,” Alexander said. “With checks, she writes out as many checks as she can and then uses the checks to create checks, using the account number and routing number.”

Herzog is also proficient at making fake IDs, using her own photograph and other people’s information.

“Her case is unique because it is only her,” Alexander said, referring to the majority of cases in which several people usually are involved in identity theft and fraud.

“We really don’t know if someone else is helping her, but in every video surveillance I’ve seen, it only shows her,” Alexander said. “She is always by herself.”

Alexander said he is aware of multiple victims and believes “this is just the tip of the iceberg.”
