Identity Theft, Teens risking it for Beer

Fourteen teens arrested in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., over the past month are suspected of doing what a lot of young people have done for generations: trying to get their hands on some alcohol. But they may have bought themselves a whole lot of future trouble.

The teenagers allegedly traded their photos, Social Security numbers and $75 money orders for extremely realistic-looking driver’s licenses via a website in China, according to the Albany Times Union.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

The teens face a misdemeanor charge. Meanwhile, their personal information has been sold to identity thieves, authorities said.

Once upon a time, having a fake ID meant changing a number on your license, or maybe getting a duplicate identity card from an older sibling or friend who looked like you. But authorities say the licenses obtained by the teens could have fooled not just a bouncer or store clerk but even police, border patrol and airport security.

Police said some of the forged Florida, Maine, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania licenses had magnetic strips that could be swiped in card readers and holograms visible under a black light, The Saratogian reported

The IDs would have fooled police scanners on a traffic stop, Saratoga Springs police Lt. John Catone told The Saratogian:
“Not until two, three, four days down the road when that information downloads into the DMV database would we find out there is no such person in that particular state,” he said. “That’s how good they are.”

Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy said at a press conference that personal information sent to the overseas website has been sold, and that those who supplied their information should consider themselves a target for identity theft.

“As these kids get older and try to get jobs, try to be stockbrokers, or get a mortgage or credit cards, they will find in 90% of the cases that they have thousands in credit card debt, that they will have several mortgages they have yet to pay, holds on their licenses to states they’ve never been to, Interpol holds, because they gave their information to a foreign Web-based company,” Murphy said.

“They’re teenagers,” Catone told the Times Union. “Mortgages and loans 10, 20 years from now are not what they’re thinking about.”

Missing Persons, Kristin Jones Found

Kristin Jones, a 17-year-old girl reported missing in January, was located in Crestview on Wednesday.

Her boyfriend, Robert Ribarin, 28, was arrested and charged with kidnapping by interfering with the custody of a minor.

Jones’ mother last saw her Jan. 4 when her boyfriend, then known only as Bobby, picked her up from her house in Laurel Hill.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Walton County Sheriff’s Investigator Randy Brown said he spoke to Ribarin, who lives in Crestview, several times during the investigation. Brown said Ribarin lied to him about his relationship with Jones and was not forthcoming about her whereabouts.

“He was made aware that she was a missing person,” Brown said.

He said the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office was able to follow up on some of his leads and conduct a more in-depth investigation because Ribarin lived in Crestview.

“They were a huge help in recovering her,” Brown said.

Okaloosa County sheriff’s deputies found Jones and Ribarin together at an apartment in Crestview on Wednesday.

A deputy contacted Brown to let him know Jones was safe and had been reunited with her mother, according to a Walton County Sheriff’s Office news release issued Friday.

Although Jones was found Wednesday, that information wasn’t made public until Friday.

Asked about the delay, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Wendy Ammons said the information was forwarded to her Thursday afternoon but she did not get permission to release it until Friday afternoon.

Ribarin was being held without bond in the Okaloosa County Jail on Friday.

Drug Dog Sweep – Waitress gets to keep the $12,000

Moorhead, Minn. —

Authorities decided Thursday to return a $12,000 tip to a Minnesota waitress after concluding it wasn’t drug money after all.

Stacy Knutson of Moorhead had said that a customer told her she could keep a takeout container that she left behind at the Fryn’ Pan restaurant. When she opened the box later, according to her attorney, she found three wads of bills – $100s, $50s, $20s and $10s – wrapped in rubber bands.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

Police initially told her she could keep the money if no one claimed it, but later said it was part of a drug investigation and seized it. They said a police dog detected the odor of drugs on the cash.

On Thursday, after the case drew national attention, Assistant Clay County Attorney Michelle Lawson told reporters the money could not be tied to a criminal investigation, and that Knutson would get a check for the $12,000, The Forum of Fargo, N.D., reported (http://bit.ly/HlefWC).

Knutson sued last month to get the money back, saying she believed the money was an anonymous gift left behind a few months ago by someone who knew that she, her husband and five children were struggling with severe financial difficulties.

The lawsuit said Knutson was working when a customer left behind a takeout box from another restaurant. She followed the diner to her car and tried to return the box but the woman said, “No, I am good, you keep it,” the lawsuit said.

Her attorney, Craig Richie, said Wednesday that she didn’t know the box contained money until she went back to the kitchen and opened it. Even though Knutson really needed the money, she decided to call police, he said. After no one claimed the money, that confirmed for her that the money was truly a gift, Richie said. Her lawsuit said she believed the windfall was God’s way of answering her family’s prayers.

Process Server Attacked with Airsoft Rifle

An Auburn man allegedly shot, threw rocks and smeared a female process server’s face with mud Wednesday when she tried to serve eviction notice papers to his girlfriend.

Nicolas Mark Stenberg, 30, was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism. He has since posted bond for his $25,000 bail.

At 9:26 a.m. Wednesday, Stenberg’s girlfriend called 911 to report that a woman had come to their Mount Vernon Road home and allegedly “maced her boyfriend.” Responding deputies found Stenberg there with red, watery eyes, consistent with exposure to pepper spray. Firefighters responded to the home and treated him.

http://liarcatchers.com/process_service.html

Stenberg told deputies that an unknown female came to the house asking where his girlfriend was and he confronted her for trespassing. He said she “maced” him in the face “for unknown reasons” and he went berserk, throwing mud and rocks at her car. He said he may also have broken her car window when he threw an airsoft gun, which he had retrieved from his garage, at her car. He never mentioned firing the gun at the woman.

Around that same time, sheriff’s dispatch received a call from a woman who stated she had been involved in an incident at that address and would return there to speak with deputies.

As soon as deputies saw the woman, they called for an ambulance as the woman had multiple lacerations to her face and body. She told deputies that she had served eviction papers to Stenberg the night before, at a different location, without incident. When she showed up at his house to serve papers to Stenberg’s girlfriend, he told her to leave. She drove off, parked down the street and waited for Stenberg to leave his property. He did so a short time later, so the process server returned to the house, hoping to serve papers to the girlfriend.

The girlfriend had apparently called Stenberg to tell him the woman had returned, so he immediately returned home. When the woman saw him, she started walking toward her car. She told deputies that she heard a garage door open and that Stenberg allegedly emerged from the garage holding what appeared to be a rifle, which was actually an AK-47-style airsoft rifle. As she headed to her car, and while she sat in the car, she was shot approximately 20 times, including shots around her eye, face and chest.

As she sat in her car, she sprayed him with her pepper spray through her open window. The suspect used the butt of the gun to smash the driver’s side window. Stenberg then threw rocks and mud at, and into the car, then reached inside the car and smeared mud all over the woman’s face.

The woman was able to put the car in reverse and backed into the man’s trailer. She drove off and contacted the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Stenberg was arrested and booked at the Placer County Jail. Before deputies left the scene, they served Stenberg’s girlfriend with the eviction papers. The process server was treated at a local hospital and released.

Missing Persons, Reported Hoax

Collinsville Police have determined that a report of a missing Caseyville man was a hoax, Lt. Eric Zaber said.

Theodore “Terell” Spencer, 20, had been reported missing and in possible danger Monday but was found safe Tuesday in Festus, Mo. He had last been seen leaving Little Caesars Pizza in Collinsville Crossing the night of April Fools’ Day, according to the initial report.

Zaber said police cannot release details of the hoax at this point. They plan to present their case to prosecutors next week.
http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Spencer has not been arrested but is the focus of the investigation, Zaber said. The person who made the report acted in good faith, he said.

Spencer could not be reached for comment.

The five members of Collinsville Police’s detective division spent a day and a half trying to find Spencer and subpoena records, Zaber said.

“Yeah, there was a lot of resources invested in this,” Zaber said.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Nine-month-old Jack Stark died at Vanderbilt Children’s Medical Hospital. Police say he was found earlier this week with injuries that were consistent with abuse.

Wrongful Death Charity Romo

Twenty-nine-year old Charity Romo (aka Charity Cody, aka Charity Villalpando-Romo) was found slashed in her San Antonio home this morning with her throat slit. Police on the scene said there was “blood everywhere,” indicating that this was indeed a brutal slaying. This is a tragic case that may involve the woman’s former boyfriend, who had just moved from the home the two shared. The woman’s Facebook page doesn’t let-on as though they are broken up, so this must have been a very recent ending of their relationship. Would that be motive enough to suspect the young man?

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

To clarify, it’s not necessarily written that the young woman had split from her boyfriend, but sources report that he had just moved out and she was intending on moving from the apartment the following day, to move in with her family and her 12-year-old daughter. Homicide detectives already have a suspect, though they aren’t releasing a name, nor are they releasing the name of the slain woman’s boyfriend.

So who murdered Charity Romo? Was it the tattooed man seen with her in many of her Facebook photos?  Or could it have been someone else entirely? There is also an ex-husband in the picture, who is currently caring for the 12-year-old daughter she left behind. What about any other ex-boyfriends or former husbands?

It appears that this case may end up solved quickly if detectives already have their eyes on someone. If it’s the young woman’s boyfriend (or recent ex?) then this wasn’t the brightest crime for him to commit. Still, it would be hard to believe that someone could commit such a crime knowing that he’d be suspected immediately. He is, after all, the one who discovered the horrific crime scene and reported it to police.

Hopefully more details come to the surface as this case progresses. Meanwhile, the family of this young woman are in deep mourning and shock over what has happened. They deserve to be left in peace to deal with this terrible tragedy and they truly deserve to see justice for what has been done.

Identity Theft Troy Brower and Cathy Thompson

EL RENO – A Yukon man and woman who said they ran out of gas on Interstate 40 have been arrested on complaints of identity theft, forgery and possession of methamphetamine, the Canadian County Sheriff reports.

About 6:43 a.m. Tuesday deputies stopped to assist Troy Brower, 26, and Cathy Thompson, 35, on I-40 in El Reno.

Brower and Thompson said they were out of gas.

Brower did not have a driver’s license. The license plate on the vehicle had an expiration tab that had been pulled off of a stolen license plate, Sheriff Randall Edwards reports in a news release.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

A dog detected the odor of illegal drugs. While searching the vehicle, counterfeit checks, check writing programs and check paper stock were found in the trunk of the vehicle.

Bower and Thompson were both taken to the Canadian County Sheriff’s office for questioning. When Thompson was searched at the Canadian County jail by a female corrections officer, methamphetamine, counterfeit checks and stolen credit cards were recovered from her bra.

Another woman’s identification card was also recovered from Thompson.

Investigators learned Thompson and Bower were also wanted in other cases involving counterfeit checks, fraud and identity theft at Remington Park and in Midwest City.

Canadian County Sheriff’s investigators, United States Secrete Service and Midwest City detectives interviewed Bower and Thompson.

The release claims Bowers and Thompson “admitted they had been producing and cashing counterfeit checks for years.”

A search warrant was obtained for their vehicle and a residence in Yukon. Counterfeit checks, counterfeit Social Security cards and other documents were recovered from the residence and vehicle, a news release states.

Thompson was jailed on complaints of possession of a illegal drugs, identity theft and forgery. Bower was charged with identity theft and forgery. Thompson is currently in the Canadian County jail being held on $20,000 bail. Bower is being held on $5,000 bail, the release states.

Insurance Fraud by Arson Antoine Costello

TRENTON – A Ewing man has been found guilty of insurance fraud and arson after reporting his car stolen and setting it on fire in an effort to collect on his insurance.

Antoine Costello, 31, of Scenic Drive, was convicted of second-degree insurance fraud, second-degree aggravated arson and third-degree attempted theft by deception, Casey DeBlasio, spokeswoman for Mercer County Prosecutor Joseph L. Bocchini Jr., said Thursday.
He was convicted after a three-day jury trial with Assistant Prosecutor Heather Hadley representing the state. The jury deliberated for about four hours in finding Costello guilty on all counts.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html
An investigation revealed that on April 9, 2008, at 1 a.m., Costello called the Hamilton Township police and reported he was hijacked in his 2002 Mercury Mountaineer.
He said he had gone to see a girl for a date when he was approached by five black males brandishing a gun and demanding his car. Costello said the men got in his car and drove away.
He didn’t immediately call police but, he contended, he did call a friend, Anthony Govan, to get him. Costello called police when Govan arrived.
The Mountaineer was found burning in Ewing Township.
Costello filed a claim for the damages with his insurance company.
The investigation found the fire was set intentionally and that both Costello and Govan made up the story and both were involved in torching the car.
Govan pleaded guilty to second-degree insurance fraud in January and testified against his friend. He will be sentenced later this month, DeBlasio said.
Costello faces a maximum sentence of five years in state prison and a fine of $150,000 for each of the second-degree convictions. The third-degree crime has a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $15,000.
Mercer County Superior Court Judge Andrew Smithson set sentencing for June 5.
