Missing Person Body Recovered From Big Bear Lake Could Be Missing Irivine

Officials from San Bernardino County in California say that they have recovered the body of a woman from the Big Bear lake. While the body has not been positively identified yet, authorities suspect it could be of a missing woman from the area. In fact, the body was spotted by a helicopter search team looking for the woman as it flew over the Big Bear lake. According to OC Register, the body of the woman was located at around 10 a.m. local time.

According to a report by KTVU, the helicopter search party were looking for 35-year-old Lisa Ann Cimbaluk, who has been missing since December 29, 2014. As the helicopter flew over the South Shore area of the Big Bear lake, they spotted the body in the waters. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the person whose body was found in the waters.

Over the course of the past week, officials from the San Bernardino County had led a huge search for Lisa Ann, who was last seen by her family members on December 29. On Sunday, officials managed to recover Cimbaluk’s Toyota RAV 4 SUV from a parking lot at the Woodlands trailhead in Fawnskin, north of Big Bear Lake, completely covered in snow. There was no sign of Lisa inside the car, though. Officials, however, had intensified search, and rescue efforts in the area following the discovery of her car.

Prior to the helicopter search team recovering the body, a team of 60 San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies and search-and-rescue volunteers from five neighboring counties spent nearly eight hours looking for Lisa in a thickly forested, rocky swathe of land located near Bertha Ridge not far from the Big Bear Lake. The team included a search dog, a helicopter, and several four-wheel-drive vehicles. They were, however, not able to find anything.

At the time of filing this article, officials from the San Bernardino County are working to ascertain the identity of the body. They are also trying to determine the actual cause of death.

Missing Person Body of Missing Michigan City, Indiana Man Found

Police say the body of a 20-year-old man discovered inside a house in Michigan City is that of a person reported missing in November.

Damarius Kelly was located just before noon Wednesday in the 400 block of Holiday Street off Michigan Boulevard on the city’s north end.

Police and the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office were not disclosing the cause or manner of death, preferring to wait for the results of an autopsy before revealing further details.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

According to police, Kelly was last seen November 26 and reportedly had been staying at different locations up until his disappearance.

Investigators were told by family members Kelly was wired $200 but he never picked up the money and failed to show for a Thanksgiving dinner, something described as uncharacteristic of him, police said.

Authorities also did not provide clues on how long Kelly had been dead or confirm whether the house he was found in was vacant.

”I can’t give out any details on the condition of the deceased,” said Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek.

LaPorte County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Huffman said an autopsy is scheduled Friday afternoon in Lafayette.

He was not sure how long it will take for the forensic examination to determine how Kelly died.

”Sometimes it’s a day or two. Sometimes it’s a week. It depends on how in depth they get with the case and how easy the case is for them to find out,” said Huffman.

There is a site on Facebook entitled Find Damarius Kelly – missing from Michigan City, Indiana.

On that page, there is a message that conveys a desire by the family for patience and privacy during their time of grief.

”Much will become known about what happened to Damarius in the coming days and weeks, but today is not the day for those kinds of questions. Today is a day to provide prayers and wishes of peace and comfort for the family and friends who lost their gentle giant. As always…when we know more, you will know more,” the post states.

Michigan City police ask anyone with information to contact Cpl. Greg Jesse at 874-3221 ext 340.

Cold Case Arrest Made in 2011 San Bernardino County Homicide

In the summer of 2011, a jogger found Christine Kunstmann’s body in a shallow grave near Yucaipa.

Two months ago, the Sheriff’s Department reopened the case. And on Wednesday, detectives arrested two people, whom friends of Kunstmann had long suspected of killing her.

“You had about 10,000 people that suspected it was him,” said Sherry Thompson, who was friends with Kunstmann for 14 years, upon being told the names of those arrested. “Oh, my gosh, you gave me the best news.”

On Tuesday, San Bernardino County sheriff’s investigators brought Michael Angelo Perez, 37, and Deserae Lenore James, 24, both of Beaumont, to sheriff’s headquarters for questioning. Shortly after midnight, they formally arrested the pair.

 http://liarcatchers.com/cold_cases.html

Perez and James were booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of murder, according to booking records. Neither is being offered bail.

The District Attorney’s Office has not filed charges yet, but Perez and James are scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said Kunstmann had been friends with Perez for years, and they did not date.

After reopening the case in November, investigators interviewed “numerous witnesses which resulted in evidence identifying Michael Angelo Perez and Deserae James as suspects in this murder,” according to a Sheriff’s Department statement.

The Sheriff’s Department declined to say what evidence linked Perez and James to the crime.

“They’re not releasing that right now,” Bachman said, suggesting more information may be revealed when the suspects are charged and arraigned.

Kunstmann’s family filed a missing person’s report on June 16, 2011, after not seeing or hearing from her since the previous May 29, according to the sheriff’s statement.

Kunstmann, who moved often, had a last known address in Banning, visited friends who lived in Beaumont and regularly spoke with relatives.

“It was unlike her to go without family contact for more than a few days,” the sheriff’s statement said.

About a month after her family filed the missing person’s report, a jogger discovered a body under an oak tree off Edgar Canyon Road, about 200 yards northwest of Mile High Ranch Road.

Sheriff’s investigators opened a homicide investigation, and a month later officials identified the body as Kunstmann’s.

It’s unclear how long detectives actively worked the case.

Thompson, Kunstmann’s friend, said she was recently contacted by the sheriff’s cold case team.

She didn’t want to divulge details about the case because she may be called to testify, but described Kunstmann as a great friend who put herself before others.

“She was a great person to have as my best friend,” Thompson said. “When people needed help, she went out of her way to help them.”

Fraud Investigation Feds Say Deputy Who Stole Evidence Ran Cabin Scam

A former Franklin County Sheriff’s Office detective charged with stealing money and evidence is back behind bars a midst accusations of a cabin-building scam.

LEX 18 Investigates has also learned, after Matthew Brown resigned from the sheriff’s office, he went to work as a security team leader at the Lexington Public Library. He worked there for about a year, according to library records, including several months the U.S. Attorney’s Office says he was taking money for cabins, but not building them.

Officials from the library would not speak with LEX 18 Investigates about Brown’s employment, or the alleged activity that took place while he was working there. Other library employees were involved as well, according to court documents.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

“Because it is a personnel matter we really can’t comment on that. There are legal issues going on beyond the library,” said Doug Tattershall, spokesman for the library.

In March, LEX 18 first told you about Brown’s arrest. He pleaded guilty in November to charges he stole jewelry worth $9,900 from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, which was supposed to have been booked as evidence in a criminal case.

He was allowed out of jail on bond until his sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for March. Among his bond conditions was a requirement that he could not handle financial transactions of $5,000 or more. A motion to revoke Brown’s bond dug up by LEX 18 Investigates said he violated that condition, and committed state crimes.

According to court documents, Brown informed his probation officer in May he intended to work for a cabin building company, receiving a 10 percent commission for cabins sold through a Web site Brown created.

“The defendant did not advise the United States Probation Department that he had started his own business, Amish Cabin Creations, and that he would be handling substantial financial transactions, to wit, transactions involving $5,000 or more,” the document said.

The investigation was started in September, when an out-of-state customer told police he had paid Brown $7,120 for a cabin that was never built. Brown “refunded the money to the customer after the customer told the defendant he had talked with law enforcement,” the motion said.

Further investigation revealed that Brown’s close friend, and a security co-worker at the Lexington Public Library, Tim Hadden, had opened a bank account in Lexington listing “Amish Cabin Creations/Kountry Korner Cabins” as the sole proprietor. However, according to the records, Brown had access to the account and was the primary user, regularly depositing $5,000 or more he obtained from would-be customers.

Investigators also found Brown had spent more than $5,000 during that time period, including $7,918 for dental veneers, and $7,758 for a swimming pool.

He also allegedly took money from Mayslick Rentals, a company that provided financing for people who wanted to buy cabins. The U.S. Attorney’s motion said Brown created fake customer contracts to obtain thousands of dollars.

Many of the contracts contained fake names, phone numbers and addresses, and no cabins were found on the addresses listed on the contracts. Two of those who signed the fake contracts were also employees at the library, who told investigators Brown said he would sell their cabins on Craigslist once they were built, and pay them the profits.

The cabins were never built. Video obtained by investigators showed Brown cashing checks; in another case, a $5,000 check written to Hadden was cashed by Hadden, and the cash was given to Brown, the document said. LEX 18 Investigates could not reach Brown, who is in federal custody since a judge revoked his bond in November.

Hadden declined to comment. Neither Brown nor Hadden have been charged in connection with the alleged cabin scheme. LEX 18 Investigates obtained copies of Hadden and Brown’s personnel files from the library, as well as the contents of their user folders on their library computers.

Hadden, whose hard drive contained two pictures of the mini-cabins at issue in the federal investigation, resigned from the library Dec. 3, the same day LEX 18 Investigates filed the records request for his personnel file.
