Drug Dog Sweep Teacher and Students Arrested in AR

A history teacher at Melbourne High School and two students were arrested Feb. 12 on drug charges following a week-long investigation by the Izard County Sheriff’s Office.

Terri Hatfield, 52, of Oxford, was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver near a certain facility and tampering with evidence.

Hatfield was released from the Izard County jail after posting a $10,000 bond.

A drug dog was brought into Hatfield’s classroom and alerted deputies to a locker, according to Lawrence. Upon searching a purse in the locker, authorities discovered some 27 prepackaged bags of suspected marijuana.

Investigators say they believe Hatfield knew a canine would be used in the school’s parking lot and moved the suspected marijuana from her son’s car to avoid detection during the vehicle sweep by the department’s drug dog.

The juvenile who drove the vehicle also was arrested after additional marijuana and prescription pills were reportedly found inside the car, Lawrence said.

A second student was arrested after authorities allegedly discovered a marijuana cigarette in his pocket.

School administrators reportedly gave their complete cooperation during the investigation, Lawrence noted.
