Cold Case Reopened Possible Suspect Mix-Up

Versailles police are taking a closer look at the unsolved murder case of 22 year old Valeri Brooks. A documentary recently aired that linked serial killer Glen Rogers to Brooks’ murder in 1990. Versailles police thought DNA evidence had cleared Rogers. It had actually cleared serial killer William Glen Rogers.

Now police are revisiting the Brooks case. Brooks’ mother tells new developments–which we brought to the attention of police–has given her new hope to figuring out who killed her daughter.

There are two men named Glen Rogers who are important to this story. Two different men, same name, both serial killers.

The first Glen Rogers, who was captured in kentucky, says he murdered O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. According to the recent documentary, he’s suspected of killing several women, including Valeri Brooks.

But it’s another Glen Rogers–William Glen Rogers–who Versailles police ran DNA evidence on in 1996, after Brooks’ murder. A different man entirely. He’s on death row in Tennessee for the murder of a nine year old girl.

The same name caused a mix-up more than 20 years ago.

“I just think they’ve done a terrible job from the beginning. They could have solved this years ago if they had done their homework, which they did not,” says Caren Brooks, Valeri’s mom who now lives in New Haven, Connecticut.

For more than two decades, Caren has wondered who kidnapped then murdered her daughter. The 22 year old Thornton’s clerk was abducted New Year’s Eve in 1990, and later found stabbed to death.

To learn the wrong Glen Rogers’ DNA was tested back then, Caren Brooks is angry. But she also has hope with the investigation back in the news.

“I don’t want them to be so quick to find or say okay yeah he’s the one who did it,” Caren says. “I want them to find the right person, I don’t want them to solve it just to get it out of the way.”

Versailles police say they’ve started making phone calls to Florida, where the Glen Rogers whose DNA was never tested, is sitting on death row.

“We just have to wait and see what will come of this, if his DNA matches,” Caren says.
