As a grieving widow opens up about the loss of her husband, Bardstown Police have an update about the search for the person who gunned down Officer Jason Ellis.

With friends, family, and the brotherhood of Bardstown police by her side, Amy Ellis broke her silence as she continues to grieve her husband, slain Officer Jason Ellis.

“Words cannot express how proud I am. He is forever our hero,” says Amy.

Just days away from celebrating his 7th year on the force, Kentucky State Police say Officer Ellis was ambushed on his way home Saturday morning. Investigators say he was attacked when he pulled over to clear debris from the road, which his widow says was his nature, always looking to lend a hand.

“He loved helping people. He loved his job. He just wanted to do his job to do it right,” says Amy.

But it’s that work investigators now say made him a target. In the early stages of the investigation police couldn’t say whether the ambush was random or not. But now police say they believe the slain officer was targeted.

“We believe if it was random there could have been another one. You see what I mean? It’s almost like the job was done sort of thing,” says Bardstown Chief of Police, Rick McCubbin. The chief also said investigators are looking into all of Officer Ellis’ past arrests as they search for leads.

Police are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of officers and the public sending two cops on every call. But one officer will no longer be on the job. At Tuesday’s news conference the mayor announced Officer Ellis’ K-9 will be retiring and will go to live with the Ellis family.

Also at Tuesday’s news conference, Bardstown Mayor Bill Sheckles thanked the people of his community for their outpouring of support, which he attributes to the increase in reward money to find Officer Ellis’ killer. The reward started at $1,000 and grew to $22,000 in a matter of days. It currently stands at $32,000 after the mayor announced he’s adding an additional $10-thousand dollars on behalf of the city.
