Pedophile Tracking Port Charlotte, FL Convicted

The former music director of a Middleton church pleaded no contest Friday to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old runaway who lived with a Mount Horeb police lieutenant who also faces sexual assault charges.

James “Alex” Gillespie, 48, of Port Charlotte, Fla., was convicted of second-degree sexual assault of a child for sex acts involving the Beloit boy, who at the time was living with Dennis Jenks in Madison.

Jenks, 44, was a Mount Horeb police lieutenant when he was charged Feb. 21 with repeated sexual assault of a child, but he has since resigned. Since his arrest prosecutors have added eight counts of sexual exploitation of a child and 24 counts of possessing child pornography. Jenks is scheduled to be back in court on Aug. 1.

Gillespie was music director of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Middleton. Police received tips about activity at his condominium and other concerns that eventually led them to the boy. Police found the boy living at Jenks’ apartment on Feb. 13.

According to a criminal complaint, Gillespie told police that he met the boy through social media and thought he was 18. The boy said that each time he was with Gillespie he felt guilty because he felt like he was cheating on another man.

Gillespie will be sentenced by Dane County Circuit Judge Stephen Ehlke in about two months after a pre-sentence investigation is finished.
