Accident Reconstruction 2 Killed in Multi-Vehicle Collision in Shelby County

Two people were killed Monday in an accident involving six vehicles that shut down Interstate 64 for several hours.

The two men killed had apparently stopped to check on the drivers of the vehicles involved in an accident when they were hit.

The accident happened near mile marker 38 heading west in I-64 around 11:30 Monday. The initial accident happened when a semi side swiped a box truck, then went in the median with a third vehicle. The second accident happened when a second semi hit two other vehicles, a van and a company van, that had stopped on the left shoulder.

The victims have been identified as 71-year-old Charles Burtt of Broad Run, Virginia, and 33-year-old Jamaal Wood of Louisville.

Police say both Burtt and Wood were outside their vehicles at the time of impact.

The Shelby County coroner said their deaths will be ruled blunt force injuries sustained after being struck in a motor vehicle accident.

Police say Burtt’s wife witnessed him being struck. She was calling 911 when he was hit to tell them about the first accident they saw.

The coroner said the family planned to claim the body and go back to Virginia. Police say Wood was a brand new father and worked at SCM Life Oxygen in Louisville. Funeral arrangements for Burtt and Wood are pending.

Officials say that Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies will be doing more investigation on Tuesday. It is unclear if any charges will be filed.

I-64 was reopened Monday around 10:00 p.m.
