Missing Person Body of Missing Man Found Near Fort Bragg

The body of a Fort Bragg man reported missing last week was found Sunday down a cliff along with a gun, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the MCSO, Patrick Guzman, 70, of Fort Bragg, was reported missing Sept. 3 after his vehicle, a white 1999 Cadillac Deville, was found unoccupied the day before with the engine running in a pullout along Highway 1 in Westport, several miles north of Fort Bragg.

Guzman was identified as the registered owner of the vehicle, and after unsuccessfully trying to contact him and his family members, the MCSO declared him a missing person.

At around 5 p.m. Sept. 8, Tony Reed, a reporter with the Fort Bragg Advocate-News, was examining the area where Guzman’s vehicle was located.

Using the telephoto lens on his camera, Reed reportedly saw a handgun on the steep bluff down to the ocean, and later located a white shoe in the rocks, approximately 150 feet below.

Reed then flagged down a passing California Department of Fish and Wildlife warden who called MCSO deputies. The deputies found Guzman’s body, requesting the aid of the Westport Volunteer Fire Department to retrieve it.

The handgun, which belonged to Guzman, was also recovered. According to the MCSO, the cause of Guzman’s death is still under investigation.
