Wrongful Death Additional Info on Mother Who Left Baby in Trashcan

A Louisville woman is out of jail on her own recognizance after pleading not guilty to charges she left her baby girl in a department store trashcan to die.

Jessica Price says she learned she was pregnant only one month before giving birth and that when she delivered her daughter, she thought she’d miscarried.

LEX18 News has obtained a copy of the police interrogation of Jessica Price following her arrest on August 8th.

Price admitted throwing her newborn daughter away after giving birth while at work at a Kohl’s in Louisville.

“I picked it up and it wasn’t moving, it wasn’t breathing, and the umbilical cord had already separated and I panicked, I got scared,” she said.

Price says she then tried to clean the baby off with paper towels.

“And what did you do next?” the detective asked.

“I got the trash bag and I put it in there,” Price responded.

During the nearly three-hour interview, Price admitted to knowing she was pregnant after feeling the baby kick, but that she showed similar symptoms to a miscarriage she’d experienced in the past.

“I found out about a month ago; I had my period the entire time,” she said. “I have had a miscarriage before and it did the same thing, I just was home at the time when I lost the baby last time,” she said.

Price says she could not come up with an answer as to why she did not seek medical attention.

Price says she stood there in the stall for two to four minutes holding her daughter, but that the newborn didn’t move or make a sound.

Before wrapping the interview and allowing Price to be taken to the hospital to be examined, the detective asked price two final questions: one – did she wish to name her daughter, currently being called “Baby Girl Price.”

“I don’t, I guess. Just… can I change my mind later? Or does it have to have a name now?” Price said.

And two – did Price think she’d done anything wrong.

“I have to have done something wrong to lose the baby, didn’t I? Why did I put it…”

Price stopped short of completing that sentence and saying… in the trash.

Right now, Price is out of jail on her own recognizance until her trial.
