Fraud Investigation Indy Officials Warn of Fraudulent Tickets

Tickets for the UK versus Louisville Sweet 16 game Friday are expected to cost more than the actual championship game itself.

They’re already listed online for upwards of 500% more than face value. So, if you’re spending the big bucks – how can you be sure your ticket is legit?

Face value tickets for this weekend’s games range from $50 to about $200. But diehard fans will likely be paying much more, whether it’s online or on the streets. Ticket brokers in Indy are required to carry a yellow card that indicates a legal license to sell tickets within a mile of the stadium.

“We’re telling people to ask for that, and they can trust that their tickets will be real,’ said Adam Baker with Indianapolis Code Enforcement.

Anyone caught selling tickets illegally can be fined up to $2,500, which is why code enforcement will be out in full. The team, which operates both in uniform and undercover, typically busts about one illegal vendor every 20 minutes on game days.

“People are getting smarter day by day, and sometimes it’s hard to tell which tickets will be fake until the day of the event,” Baker said.

But it’s a risk many diehard fans are willing to take.

“It’s going to cost a lot to get in here, but it’s worth it because it’s gonna be fun,” said True Blue fan Kyle Stidom said.

Tickets are sold out for Friday’s game, but are still available for Sunday’s match up for as low as $50 each.
