Identity Theft Principal of Chester County, TN Middle School Charged

The principal of Chester County Middle School was indicted Monday on three counts of identity theft related to fraudulent purchases made in January with a bank card that had been lost by a Jackson woman, Jackson police said in a news release.

Cristy Swope, 45, was notified of the indictment and surrendered at the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex on Wednesday afternoon, according to the news release. Swope was released from the Madison County Jail after posting a $1,000 bond.

The Chester County school system’s website identifies Swope as the principal of Chester County Middle School.

On the afternoon of Jan. 11, a 67-year-old Jackson woman reported that she had lost her bank card in Steinmart in Jackson. The woman later discovered that someone had made unauthorized transactions with the card at various places in Jackson totaling $138.86.

Investigators learned that on Jan. 11 Swope made a purchase with the lost card at Steinmart for $79.74, according to the release. Swope then used the card for a purchase of $37.28 at Madison South Liquor and Wine, and then made a purchase for $21.84 at Kanpai Japanese Restaurant, the release said.

Swope is scheduled to be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. on Monday in Madison County Circuit Court, Division III.
