Wrongful Death Body of Missing Gulfport, MS Girl Found

The body of 5-year-old Janaya Makayia Thompson, of Gulfport, was found this morning inside the bathroom of an abandoned mobile home on Whitney Drive, authorities have confirmed.

The girl was missing for about 12 hours before her body was found with the aid of a search dog at about 8:45 a.m. today.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said an autopsy is scheduled for later today.

“I expect a result later this evening, but I won’t release anything until I’m satisfied the family is aware of what we found,” Hargrove said.

The FBI’s emergency response team crime scene unit is headed down to assist Gulfport authorities “to go over evidence and lend a hand,” Hargrove said.

At approximately 8:29 p.m. Wednesday, the Gulfport Police Department responded to The Palms Apartments located at 10471 Three Rivers Rd. in reference to a report of a missing child.

Thompson was last seen in the parking lot near her family’s first-floor apartment, the family reported to police.

Hargrove said one of the canines from Gulf Coast Search & Rescue was given the scent of the young girl’s clothing.

“They started to search near the apartments when the dog began to track, and it led up to the trailer,” he said.

The Whitney Drive mobile home is located just north of their apartment complex.

Police Chief Leonard Papania had said his department was utilizing all resources to locate the child, including the Gulfport Fire Department, Gulf Coast Search and Rescue, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department Air Unit, and neighboring residents of the apartment.

A group of volunteers gathered Wednesday night to lend a hand.

“This tragedy has rocked the foundation of our community,” Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes said. “We have confidence in the compassion and professionalism of our police officers, and will devote all resources at our disposal to the solving of this crime.

“We ask our community support the efforts of this investigation and for the continued prayers for this family,” he said.

No other details are being released at this time.

Anyone with any information on this incident is urged to contact the Gulfport Police Department at 228-868-5959.
