Investigators are still working to identify human remains found over the weekend in the Daniel Boone National Forest.
The Rowan County Coroner says he’s looking into the possibility the remains could be those of a missing man from Michigan whose car was found at a rest stop in the county nearly 10 years ago.
In 2005, Thomas Ray James, 54, had been missing for months when his vehicle was found abandoned at a Rowan County rest stop along the Interstate.

Fast forward to last Sunday when a hunter made a gruesome discovery about a mile from that very same rest stop. Police say a man hunting for mushrooms found a human skull and several clothing items in a wooded area.
As the remains are in the process of being identified, the Rowan County Coroner tells LEX 18 that he has been in contact with authorities in Michigan. While the Coroner doesn’t want to give the family false hope, he says the odds of this being Thomas Ray James is “at the top of their list of possibilities.”
