Wrongul Death Man Indicted in Brutal Attack Death of Elderly Man

A grand jury has indicted a Lexington man on murder in the beating death of an elderly man.

Cory Etherington was charged in the death of 87-year-old John Tully, who was attacked on July 11 and left outside the Old Farm Apartments with multiple injuries. Tully was found by a neighbor in a breezeway and taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital, where he later died.

Police arrested Etherington a day after Tully’s murder on an unrelated charge. He was later charged with murder but police did not say how they came to the connection.

Back in July, Etherington pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. LEX 18 reached out to Etherington in the Fayette County jail for his side of the story, but jail officials said the murder suspect “has mental health issues that prevent him from being interviewed.”

His ex-wife, Shannon Martin, said she was not surprised to learn he was accused in a brutal killing.

“I want to see him never see the light of day again. The death penalty would be fantastic, but I don’t see that happening because I’m sure he’ll plead insanity,” said Shannon Martin.

In 2013, Etherington was arrested after, police say, he punched his grandmother in the face then charged at officers. Officers say they had to use a Taser on Etherington to get him under control.

Police said then that Etherington is bipolar and hadn’t taken his medication when he attacked his grandmother. She was taken to the hospital and treated for a cut on the head.

Etherington will be arraigned on murder and tampering with physical evidence charges on Sept. 25.
