Pedophile Tracking Suspected Predator Arrested in Lexington

Lexington police say they arrested a suspected child predator who is now facing sex crime charges connected to a Florida case.

Chris Cathers tells WKYT in the eight years he’s lived on Scottish Trace in the Gleneagles subdivision he’s never had any reason to worry about his 10-year-old daughter’s safety until this week.

“Every day when you’re out watching your kids, you feel like you can’t do enough,” said Cathers.

Lexington police say they arrested Grant Bertram two doors down from Cathers’ home Friday afternoon.

According to an arrest warrant, at some point in the past 16 months, Bertram traveled from Kentucky to Saint John’s County in Florida where he had sex with a girl between 12 and 16 years old.

The Florida detective on the case says 39-year-old Bertram met the teen in an online game called World of Warcraft.

He’s now charged lewd or lascivious battery and traveling to meet a minor.

“We live 15 feet away from this gentleman. You never want to live next to a criminal no matter what the crime is but that is just sickening,” said neighbor Sandra Stokely.

In a message, the Saint John’s Sheriff’s Office said Bertram may have watched child pornography on his computer and he prefers children between the ages of 5 and 8.

Cathers said, “It really pulls the carpet out from under you. It makes us rethink our strategies for protecting our children and what we need to do for our neighborhood.”

Bertram is scheduled to appear in court Monday for an arraignment. He’s being held on a $200,000 bond. We expect to learn if he will be extradited to Florida Monday.
