Accident Reconstruction Driver of Semi Fell Asleep

Frankfort officials say the driver of a semi truck that was hauling cattle Tuesday morning when it overturned on Interstate 64 in Frankfort told them he fell asleep at the wheel.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says the driver and his wife were driving the truck from Virginia to Kansas when the man fell asleep and went off the road between mile marker 52 and exit 53, letting some cattle loose.

Both him and the woman are OK.

The semi was hauling 110 head of cattle and 15 of those got out. Three cows were killed by two separate drivers who hopped the median, hitting and killing the animals.

First responders worked to capture the loose cattle.

Officials said a state veterinarian was called to the scene and if any cattle need to be euthanized, that will be handled humanely. Local farmers were also on scene helping with equipment and loading the cattle back into the truck, officials said.

The accident happened shortly before 6:00 a.m. and both directions of I-64 were initially shut down. The eastbound lanes reopened at 8 a.m. and one of the westbound lanes had reopened by 10:30 a.m.

Franklin County Fire Department, EMA and KYTC also responded to the scene.
