Identity Theft Bladensburg, MD Man Gets 16 Years

A Bladensburg man has been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison for a bank fraud scheme.

Thirty-six-year-old Sherif Akande was also ordered to pay more than $111,000 in restitution at sentencing Monday in federal court in Greenbelt.

According to a statement of facts, Sherif Akande, his brother, 36-year-old Lateef Akande of Bladensburg, and others recruited people to provide personal information and open bank accounts.

Prosecutors say Sherif Akande would deposit third-party checks into those bank accounts and withdraw the money for his own use.

Lateef Akande earlier pleaded guilty to his role in the scheme. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison and ordered to pay $418,000 in restitution.
