A fraudulent Craigslist check scam has been popping up in Madison County.
A complainant reported that she responded to a Craigslist advertisement for a job opportunity in which she would be paid every week by a company to have an advertisement place on her vehicle. After contacting the person in reference to the ad, he told the victim that she would be sent a check in the amount of $2500 with the instruction to cash the check, keep $500 and then send the remaining $2000 to an address in Texas.

The check was drawn on the Maryland Institute College of Art and immediately made the woman suspicious. She contacted police.
Richmond Police encourage people to exercise vigilance and remain skeptical of check cashing scams and say if you are in doubt, to contact law enforcement.
