The Georgetown man accused of killing a cyclist in this weekend’s Horsey Hundred Race had his first court appearance.
Tuesday, Odilon Paz-Salvador was arraigned on charges of murder, DUI, wanton endangerment and fleeing after police say his actions killed attorney Mark Hinkel. It was the last mile of a 100 mile ride when the Lexington Attorney was struck and killed. Police say Paz Salvador lost control, hitting Hinkel head on.

Paz-Salvador was charged with DUI after police found beer inside the vehicle. They say that he also confessed to smoking marijuana.
Family members told LEX 18 that the crash was a complete accident.
“I don’t want him to be viewed as a criminal I want him to be viewed as someone who did something on accident he didn’t have no intentions to do this at all,” says Alejandroy Wray, Paz-Salvador’s nephew.
Those closest to Hinkel say that even if that’s the case, it was an accident that could have been avoided.
“All of us are still in a state of shock about that. That it was just senseless. It just doesn’t make any sense and that’s what everyone is having a hard time coping with right now,” says William Shouse, a co-worker of Hinkel’s.
Hinkel will be laid to rest Thursday. Visitation will be held at Milwards Funeral Home on Man o’War, Wednesday 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. His funeral mass will be held at Christ the King on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
