Wrongful Death Man Accused in Carjacking Death Sentenced

The man responsible for a carjacking that resulted in the death of an elderly Lexington man was sentenced in court Friday morning.

Joel Searcy apologized for the September 2013 death of 82-year-old Donald “Leroy” Cooke.

Police say Cooke and his dog were forced out of his vehicle by Searcy. Cooke was found injured on the ground with his dog outside of the the PDQ Market.

Searcy admitted that he forced himself into Searcy’s car after he previously carjacked a woman and her two children. Witnesses to the crime grabbed Cooke and held him until police arrived.

Searcy said he was high  on methamphetamine at the time.

The judge sentenced Searcy to 25 years for his crime.

The family of the victim was not in court.
