A Laurel County man has been charged with murder after deputies say he admitted to killing his girlfriend. It happened Saturday night on Hickory Road in London.
Deputies say when they arrived to the home around 11:30 p.m., they found 22-year-old Shannon Engle dead on the bedroom floor with a single gunshot wound to the head. Her boyfriend, 29-year-old Christopher Byrd, was arrested several hours later.
Friends of Engle say she was a fun-loving woman who would be there at a moments notice if they needed her. When one friend found out about her death, she says it took a while to actually sink in.

“At first I didn’t believe it. I was kind of in disbelief. But when I realized that it really did happen, I was bawling,” said friend Cassie Ludwig.
According to deputies, Byrd admitted to shooting and killing Engle after some kind of domestic dispute earlier in the night. A situation Engle’s friends say was a familiar one.
“She was always strong and she was always really against that, especially when it was someone else and she was trying to help them in their situations. But I guess when you are the victim sometimes it’s harder to do things than it is to tell someone else,” said Ludwig.
Deputies recovered a gun from the scene and Byrd was charged with murder-domestic violence. He is currently in the Laurel County Detention Center.
An autopsy will be conducted Monday.
