Accident Reconstruction Victim Identified in Lexington Head-On Collision

A man has died after a head-on collision on Palumbo Drive that briefly shut down the road, the Fayette County Coroner’s Office confirms.

The crash happened on around 8:15 Friday morning. Officials say a flat bed truck carrying hay and an Equinox SUV collided head-on.  A witness told LEX 18 that the Equinox crossed the center line after hitting the back tire of a semi.

The SUV was fully engulfed in flames but someone managed to pull the driver out of the vehicle. Someone performed CPR on the man until rescue arrived.

The driver of the vehicle was a male, between 30-40 years old. He was transported to the hospital where he died.  The driver of the truck was not transported. Traffic  was redirected at Codell and Old Todds Rd while CRU was on scene to reconstruct the accident.

The victim’s sister contacted LEX 18 and told us that her brother, Charlie Cates, was a loving father and had just dropped his oldest son off at school when the accident happened.

The family says they will appreciate any donations for the cost of the funeral.

The crash is still under investigation.
