Wrongful Death 911 Dispatcher Killed; Man Charged With Murder

State police say 25-year-old Dustin Sparks was at house party on Fairgrounds Road in Owsley County Friday night, when he fatally stabbed 28-year-old Benjamin Brewer of Beattyville shortly before 10:30.

“It just been a shock. It’s a total shock to the whole community. Ben was a well respected, well mannered young man. He grew up with my kids playing basketball,” said friend Charlotte Gabbard.

According to arrest papers, nothing was unusual about the evening until Brewer and Sparks got into an argument. That’s when witnesses say Brewer threw a punch at Sparks and Sparks allegedly then swung a knife back at Brewer, cutting his neck. Brewer was pronounced dead on scene.

“I said, ‘why…why he get stabbed?’ They said it could have been over a woman or something,” said Gabbard.

Arrest papers indicate Sparks says he stabbed Brewer because he feared for his life, but Sparks had no visible injuries and witnesses say Sparks had absolutely no reason to fear for his life.

“Never would I dream that Ben Brewer would have had any kind of altercation with someone like that,” said Gabbard.

Dustin Sparks has been charged with 1st degree murder.

People who knew Ben Brewer say he graduated from Owsley County High School and worked for Madison County 911 Dispatch.

“I know his mother well and my heart and prayers just go out to her because I cant imagine what she’s feeling today. Who would have thought that something like this happen to Ben,” said Gabbard.
