Identity Theft Suspect Says He’s Too Smart to be Caught

The search is on for a man stealing people’s identities in Jefferson County, who deputies say told them he’s too smart to be caught.

Tony Canterberry is facing four counts of identity theft. He’s been arrested before – we were provided a mugshot from an unrelated case.

Investigators accuse Canterberry of stealing the identity of an employee working for a tax software company. Deputies say he then posed as that employee in order to take advantage of the customers.

One customer told deputies that he originally called the company to resolve a tax issue. The customer says the employee answering the phone was rude, and even sent him emails threatening to destroy his identity.

Detectives say they connected Canterberry to the emails. They contacted him and asked him to come in and talk to them.

“You know he’s telling our investigators that he’s got superior intelligence and that’s why we won’t catch him,” said Chief Deputy Randy Christian. “So for that reason alone, I like our chances of getting to lock him up and we’re gonna look forward to that.”

Deputies say when they find Canterberry, he will face a $340,000 bond. If you know where he is, call Crime Stoppers at 254-7777.
