Wrongful Death Driver Charged After Allegedly Hitting and Killing 2 Girls

A Louisville man has been charged with two counts of murder after hitting and killing two young girls while allegedly driving intoxicated.

The accident occurred in Louisville’s Jefferstown community on Tuesday night. WAVE 3 News reports that Juan Carlos Ortega-Santos was driving with a blood-alcohol level of .200, more than twice the legal limit, when he struck two young girls in the bicycle lane of Taylorsville Road.

A 10-year-old girl was pronounced dead on scene. A 16-year-old girl was transported to Kosair Children’s Hospital. Police say a third girl in the group suffered non life-threatening injuries.

EMTs treating Ortega-Santos for non-life-threatening injuries smelled alcohol on him. He was taken to Baptist Health Louisville where his blood-alcohol level was tested. Ortega-Santos told police he drank two or three Modelo beers between 7 and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Ortega-Santos is charged with two counts of murder, first-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving without a license and failure to maintain insurance.
