Wrongful Death Men Plead Not Guilty in Death of Pregnant Woman

Three men charged in the killing of a Lexington woman and her unborn baby made a court appearance Wednesday.

Maryiah Coleman was shot and killed while walking her dog in the Winburn neighborhood last September.

The three men accused in the case were already in jail, charged in a home invasion police say happened a month after Maryiah was killed.

Police say that Demetrioun Boaz, Joseph “Jodie” Fain, and Saquan Freeman were robbing an acquaintance of guns and other items when the man tried to escape. Shots were fired, one hitting Coleman who was only one month away from delivering her son, Jakobe.

Six weeks later, police say Boaz, Fain, and Freeman tried to rob a home on Red Mile Road. Freeman was shot five times and was hospitalized, Boaz turned himself in a few days later, and Fain was arrested in Mason County a month later.

“I’m very happy that they have the people responsible for Maryiah and Jakobe’s death, but at the same time, it just hurts to know that she’s not here,” said Maryiah’s mother Tamara Coleman.

All three men pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder and fetal homicide.
