Wrongful Death Couple Sentenced on Reckless Homicide Charges

A Wayne County couple walked free out of a Pulaski County courtroom Friday.

Jarred Futrell and Kayla Lord were found guilty of reckless homicide in the 2011 death of Lord’s 18-month-old son Staten Stephenson.

Doctors say that Stephenson had no brain activity. They found injuries to his head, chest, arms and legs. After 10 days in the ICU at UK Hospital, he died.

Police and prosecutors both said that there is no way the injuries could be accidental.

The couple was originally found guilty of wanton murder but got that conviction overturned following an appeal case. The jury claimed they didn’t know they could convict the couple on lesser charges.

On Friday, Futrell was sentenced to three years behind bars and Lord was sentenced to two, but both had previously served enough time already to meet that sentence.

Futrell and Lord refused to comment on the case.

Their attorneys maintain that the young toddler died after choking on a piece of gum.
