A TARNEIT man has warned fellow pet owners to be vigilant following the brazen theft of two purebred pups from his backyard.
Dog owner Phillip Perry went to the desperate measure of hiring a private investigator after the theft of the twin five-month-old Labradors on August 3, a move which paid off when the dogs were found dumped by the side of a road.
“We don’t have any kids, so in a way these are our kids, they are part of our family,” Mr Perry said.
“We thought well you either just put up a few signs on some posts like everyone else, or you get out there and do everything in your power to find them.”
The pups were found after the private investigator asked questions at a number of work sites in the area.
“It seems as though there is a black market [for purebred pets] definitely out there,” Mr Perry said.
In a similar incident, a female blue English Staffordshire terrier was stolen from an address in Baden Drive, Hoppers Crossing on August 2. RSPCA spokesman Tim Pilgrim said pet owners should keep animals as secure as possible when they weren’t home.
Wyndham police spokeswoman Fiona Reid said there hadn’t been a noticeable increase in pet thefts in recent times.
