Arson Investigation Chico, CA Church

According to the Chico Fire Department, just after 1:00am Thursday morning, a woman in a nearby home heard a loud boom, then a few minutes later smelled smoke. She saw smoke and flames coming from the Church of the Esplanade, located at 1119 Esplanade. When firefighters arrived, flames had ripped through a building connected to the church. They knocked them down quickly, and cut a hole in the roof for ventilation. Fire investigators are hoping someone in the area saw something, or someone suspicious. This is the second time there’s been a fire at the church. Three months ago, a mattress that had been in a nearby dumpster was set on fire. No damage was reported. The damage is estimated between $10,000 to $15,000.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office says 37-year-old John Michael Hoover was arrested Tuesday.

Identity Theft 2 Miami Officers Face Charges

Two Miami police officers were arrested Thursday on federal charges related to identity theft and tax-refund fraud.

Malinsky Bazile, 28, and Vital Frederick, 26, are among 11 Miami police officers relieved of duty in recent months who face potential criminal charges or the loss of their jobs in connection with the corruption investigation of the department, according to the The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/XW0YvR ). The investigation was a joint effort between the department and the FBI.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

“Lawmen have a great responsibility and therefore must be held to a higher standard,” said Acting SAC William J. Maddalena for FBI Miami. “The FBI’s Miami Area Corruption Task Force was assembled and designed to ensure that these high standards of integrity are met and maintained.”

Bazile and Frederick stole people’s identities from Miami police databases and used the information to file fraudulent tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service, court records showed. Investigators found Bazile alone ran searches on more than 1,000 people on the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles database, and that he provided some of that personal information to his step-brother, Jean-Baptiste Charles, to file fraudulent tax-refund claims, a criminal complaint reported.

A state corrections officer, Bernard Beliard, 27, was also arrested Thursday in connection with Bazile and Frederick. Both officers had been relieved of duty before their arrests.

The joint corruption investigation was launched a year ago when a Liberty City sports gambling ring was broken up. Last month, Miami police officer Nathaniel Dauphin, 41, pleaded guilty to an extortion charge for providing protection for the illegal betting business. But he’s expected to receive a substantial sentence reduction after wearing a wire for the FBI last year to root out corruption in his own department.

Dauphin’s cooperation led to the arrest of fellow officer Harold James, 29, court records showed. James resigned in November and pleaded guilty last month to two extortion charges.

Cold Case 39 Yr Old Missing Person Case in Sioux Falls

Imagine checking in on a loved one at home, only to find the house in disarray.

A partially eaten pizza, flour scattered on the floor, and a car still in the driveway.

That was what a Sioux Falls man saw back in 1974.

The man then reported his estranged wife missing, but that’s not the whole story…

Since they were estranged, it was actually her co-workers who first alerted the husband.

Police say it’s a unique case for Sioux Falls.

http://liarcatchers.com/cold_cases.html

Of course they have other missing person cases and unsolved homicides but this case started as a missing person case with a lot of unusual circumstances.

Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens explained, at 39 years and counting, it maybe rare to solve a missing person case this old but not impossible.

“You have 50-year-old murders that all of a sudden get solved with one new piece of evidence and really, that’s all we’re looking for,” Officer Clemens said.

Ella Beth Lodermeier’s estranged husband called police because his wife’s co-workers believed she was missing. her husband and police went to the house to find it looked like someone left in a hurry.

“The only thing that they could find was missing from inside the house was her purse and her coat. But the cars was still there, she hadn’t notified any family or friends or anything so there were a lot of different things that really from the beginning made officers suspicious,” Officer Clemens said.

After ten years, police exhausted all leads in the case until something unexpected turned up in 1992, her purse and wallet. The evidence was found in this area east of Sioux falls on the banks of the Big Sioux, nearly 20 years later after Ella Beth went missing

“The work the officers and detectives did once that information came to light, once they found that stuff, they went through a lot, checking out that area and looking at different places where she may have been buried,” Officer Clemens said.

As with many cases, police considered Ella Beth’s estranged husband a suspect at one time.

“There have been talk about different other people but really nothing came to fruition from any of those things. so there’s still some direction that the case is going. it’s not a closed case by any means,” Officer Clemens said.

Police believe it’s never too late to solve this case.

“If there’s some new information, a tip, somebody heard something or saw something… at this point in time, it might be a grandma who said something to a grandson,” Officer Clemens said.

One piece of evidence which would obviously give police a clue in this case is her body.

But Ella Beth’s body has never been found.

A reward was offered at the time of her disappearance in 1974 in the amount of $1200.

Police reports state people were asked within a 200-mile radius to look for any evidence of a possible grave site where a body may have been buried.
