Identity Theft Providence, RI Man Sentenced to 2 Years for Scheme

A citizen of the Dominican Republic living in Providence has been sentenced to two years in federal prison in a scheme to steal and sell the identities of Puerto Rican U.S. citizens.

The U.S. Attorney’s office said Rafael Lara-Mejia (LAAH’-ruh Muh-HEE’-uh) was sentenced in U.S. District Court on Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in December to one count each of conspiracy to commit identification fraud and conspiracy to encourage an alien to live in the United States for financial gain. He was among those named in a 2011 federal indictment in Puerto Rico.

It alleges that conspirators in Puerto Rico illegally obtained Puerto Rican identities and documents. Conspirators throughout the U.S. then found customers and “identity brokers” like Lara-Mejia who sold Social Security cards and birth certificates for between $700 and $2,500 a set.

Pedophile Tracking Kilgore Pastor Arrested

A Kilgore pastor was being held late Monday in the Rusk County Jail, accused by police of sexually assaulting a child over a period of years.

Glenn Douglas Barton, 62, was arrested about 3:30 p.m. Monday at a residence on the grounds of the Calvary Way Church and charged with an outstanding Rusk County warrant of arrest for aggravated sexual assault of a child, a felony grade offense.

He was being held under a $50,000 bond after being arraigned Monday evening in Kilgore Municipal Court.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

The arrest and warrant stem from a continuing investigation being conducted by the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Kilgore Police Department, according to a statement issued by the department after the arrest.

“This investigation was initiated after Kilgore police investigators received a report two weeks ago alleging Mr. Barton sexually assaulted a child,” police said. “The alleged sexual abuse occurred between 2009 and 2013.”

The statement said the investigation had revealed no other victims to date, but that it was continuing.

Calvary Way Church is located at 106 Woodlawn St. in Kilgore. According to the church’s website, Rev. Glenn D. Barton is the senior pastor and has been with the church since 1999.

The church operates a daycare and Calvary Way Academy, an accredited, pre-K through 12th grade school.

Reached by telephone late Monday, a spokeswoman at the church declined to comment on Barton’s arrest.

Private Investigator Iranian and US Citizen Sentenced in Plot to Export

LOUISVILLE, KY—David J. Hale, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky; Lisa Monaco, Assistant Attorney General for National Security; and Perrye Turner, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Louisville Division, announced the sentencings today of two men to charges related to unlawful export of aircraft and aircraft parts from the United States to Iran. One of the defendants, Hamid Asefi, age 67, is a citizen and resident of the Republic of Iran. The other, Behzad Karimian, also known as “Tony” Karimian, age 52, is a United States citizen living in Louisville, Kentucky, who holds a valid Iranian passport and is employed as a Mesaba Airlines Pilot. Asefi was sentenced to 23 months in prison, and Karimian was sentenced to 46 months in prison by Chief Judge Joseph H. McKinley, Jr. in United States District Court. The defendants pleaded guilty in Louisville before Magistrate Judge James D. Moyer on December 3, 2012. The two-count indictment was returned by a federal grand jury meeting in Louisville on August 2, 2012, and unsealed prior to their change of pleas hearings.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

Hamid Asefi and Behzad Karimian were both charged with conspiracy to violate and violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act for exporting, selling, or causing the export or sale of aircraft and aircraft parts without first having obtained the required license from the U.S. Department of Treasury. Asefi made his initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 1, 2012. Karimian was arrested and made his initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 6, 2012.

Asefi is the principal officer of Aster Corp Ltd., an Iranian company with offices in both Iran and the United Kingdom. The indictment charges that, beginning as early as August 2007 and continuing through April 2011, Asefi used the United Kingdom office of Aster to serve as a transshipment point to facilitate shipment of goods from the United States to Iran; Asefi used Aster to facilitate the shipment of goods from the United States to Iran through third party countries; Asefi sent requests on behalf of Iranian entities to Karimian for purchases of aircraft and aircraft parts located in the United States or owned by United States persons; and Karimian knowingly and willfully made inquiries, placed orders, and attempted to facilitate the purchase of aircraft and aircraft parts located in the United States and owned by United States persons on behalf of defendant Asefi and persons in Iran.

Asefi and Karimian pleaded guilty to count one of the indictment and admitted in court that they acted with knowledge and intent to violate the Iran embargo when on September 27, 2007, Asefi and Karimian sent e-mails to establish a “profitable business collaboration” for the purpose of procuring aircraft and aircraft components for end-users in Iran. They further admitted that on or about October 1, 2009, Asefi sent an e-mail to Karimian which outlined the terms of delivery and payment on future transactions with Iran Air and stated “…remember that, only U.S. Embargo has brought this chance and benefit to us, to get involved in these deals….”

Further, defendants Asefi and Karimian pleaded guilty to count two of the indictment and admitted that beginning in September 2009 and continuing through April 2010, they violated the embargo against Iran by exporting and causing the export of services related to the sale of a G.E. Aircraft Engine Model CF6-50C2, as well as attempting the procurement of helicopters manufactured by Bell Helicopter, from the United States to Iran, without first having obtained the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of Treasury. All of the aircraft and aircraft parts involved in this case were intended for civilian use.

“The investigation and prosecution of national security cases is the top priority of the Department of Justice and my Office,” stated David J. Hale, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky. “We view the circumvention of Iranian export control laws as a very serious matter. The FBI should be commended for its excellent work in disrupting this international scheme and bringing these men to justice.”

The International Emergency Economic Powers Act authorizes the President of the United States to impose economic sanctions on a foreign country when the president declares a national emergency with respect to a national security threat. On March 15, 1995, the president issued an executive order declaring the actions and policies of the government of Iran constituted a national emergency. On May 6, 1995, the president issued an executive order imposing the Iran Trade Embargo. On June 23, 2011, the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Iran Air after designating it as a proliferator of weapons of mass destruction for providing material support and services to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bryan Calhoun of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky and Trial Attorney Casey Arrowood of the Counterespionage Section of the Justice Department’s National Security Division. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Louisville Division.

Wrongful Death Philadelphia Parents Say Bulling Led to Son’s Death

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) — Bailey O’Neill’s parents just wanted him to see his 12th birthday. The next day, they took him off life support.

The injuries that led to Bailey’s death Sunday were the tragic consequences of bullying at school, his parents say.

Rob O’Neill said his son was punched during a bullying incident during recess at Darby Township School in January. He said Bailey suffered a fractured nose, a concussion and seizures from the attack and was in a medically induced coma.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“We’re all overwhelmed and saddened,” he said. “I don’t ever want another kid to end up like Bailey. It’s such a shame.”

But Philadelphia-area detectives are still investigating whether the incident was, in fact, bullying or an altercation on the playground.

“This is an ongoing, active criminal investigation,” said Emily Harris, spokeswoman for the Delaware County district attorney’s office. “We are reviewing all aspects of the school incident.”

Surveillance footage shows three students in the schoolyard, including Bailey. There was one “striker,” Harris said.

Investigators are waiting for autopsy results that will become part of the investigation.

The Southeast Delco School District issued a statement Monday offering its condolences to Bailey’s family and friends.

“Our school community is deeply saddened by this loss,” Superintendent Stephen D. Butz wrote.

“Additional counselors have been made available to assist our students and staff with the emotions around the death of Bailey. The school district continues to work with local authorities in their investigation into the cause of Bailey’s death.”

Funeral arrangements for Bailey are pending, with services expected later this week.

Pedophile Tracking Maine Rape Suspect’s Girlfriend Charged

The live-in girlfriend of a Harpswell man who was charged last week with repeatedly raping a young girl has been charged in connection with the case.

Holly Colfer, 33, was arrested Friday and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. The alleged abuse occurred over a period of nearly two years.

Amos Johnson, 38, was arrested by Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies on Feb. 26 and charged with 32 counts of gross sexual assault, after an investigation into reports that he abused a girl who is a relative of Colfer’s and is now 13.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Johnson appeared in court the next day. His bail was set at $100,000 property or $50,000 cash. He was still in jail Monday. He faces as much as 25 years in prison on each count.

Colfer was charged not because she participated in the abuse but because she knew about it and failed to report it, said Lt. Donald Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

She was arrested and taken to the Cumberland County Jail on Friday, and posted $1,000 bail shortly thereafter, Foss said. Endangering the welfare of a child is punishable by as much as one year in prison.

The girl is not being identified because of her age and the nature of the alleged crime.

An affidavit by Detective Trevor Cote in support of Johnson’s arrest said the girl reported the abuse to police on Feb. 26. She said Johnson had told her that he wanted to have sex with her and she was worried about what he might do if he said no. The girl said the encounters began when she was 11 and continued past her 13th birthday.

Police interviewed Johnson, who initially denied the allegations but then admitted to the sexual encounters, according to the affidavit.

The girl also told police that Johnson asked to have sex with both her and Colfer, which never happened.

Colfer told police that she knew about some of the abuse and confirmed that Johnson asked about a threesome involving her and the girl, according to the affidavit.

The girl is now in the custody of the state Department of Health and Human Services.
