Fraud Investigation Scam Beggar in KY

He’s in a wheelchair, and gets his money by making you feel sorry for him.

Gary Thompson, says he rakes in 60,000 to 100,000 dollars a year begging. But his sob story is a sham, and he admitted it to LEX 18.

Since our story first aired about Thompson, complaints have poured into our newsroom.

“It’s offensive;” “It’s disturbing;” “It’s just plain sad;” those are some of the comments viewers have shared who say they believed Thompson, and gave him money.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

He is in a wheelchair, because he has difficulty walking, but his speech isn’t slurred and his arms are fully functioning. Thompson is not the man he makes himself out to be.

“I appreciate you guys busting me,” Thompson says as he laughs. “Yeah, I’m really good at it, really good. I clear about 100,000 dollars a year doing this.” Thompson goes on to tell us, “I am normal, it just helps to be mentally handicapped.”

“Helps” with his business. Thompson is banking on the fact you’ll feel sorry for him, enough to give him your hard-earned money.

“He got me!” Judy McKinney says.

She tells LEX 18 Thompson wheeled out in front of her stopped car on Shelby Street

“I don’t make that much money, but I reached into my pocket, and gave him everything I had. Six dollars at the time,” McKinney says.

She says he gave her the same spiel he gave us

“I actually thought he was a handicapped person and I actually thought I was doing a good deed.”

Dozens of you have come forward, telling us about Thompson, that he “approached you,” and that you “gave him money.”

Thompson has now been exposed, but he doesn’t seem worried, or remorseful. We caught him on camera trying his act again, after we busted him, right outside police headquarters. It doesn’t look like he’s going to stop this anytime soon:

“Hey I love y’all!” Thompson says, looking right into the camera. “Keep paying me! I’ll see you on the street!”

On another note, Thompson used to be a millionaire. His mother sued Honda in 1993 after he was injured in a motorcycle accident. He got 2.4 million dollars, money he says he blew.

Thompson has pleaded guilty to charges twice this year. Penalties are a 50 to 100 dollar fine and a maximum of ten days in jail. Police say to arrest him, an officer has to catch him in the act.

Private Detective Braken County Man Indicted on Abusing Disabled Sister

A Bracken County caregiver has been indicted on charges he beat and starved his mentally handicapped sister for several years.

Anthony Cottey is accused of abusing, neglecting, and stealing from his sister, Paula Cottey during a period from April 2010 until October 2012, while he lived with her at her home on Perkins Ridge Road.

“Her mother passed away and it was her mother’s wish that this brother be her guardian,” said Chief Deputy Bob Scott with the Bracken County Sheriff’s Department. “It was determined that her brother at times had been rough with her. Hit her or kicked her.”

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

According to an indictment handed down against Cottey late last week, the man had allegedly been violent, abusing his sister and “depriving her of food and (necessary) services,” like medical and dental care. He’s also accused of using her money to buy himself “a motorcycle valued in excess of $3,000.”

“There was a specific amount of money that was taken from her savings account and 2 or 3 days later that same amount of money was used to buy him a motorcycle,” said Chief Deputy Scott.

Cottey spent about a week in the Mason County Detention Center earlier this month, before bonding out on $5,000 cash. He was apparently living in a home just down the road from his sister. LEX 18 knocked on the home’s front door but no one answered.

Sheriff’s deputies said Anthony Cottey has been ordered to have no contact with his sister. Paula Cottey is said to be doing fine now.

Private Detective Child Removed from Madison County Home, Meth Lab Found

Police in Madison County said that a child was removed from a home before a meth lab was reported.

The meth lab was found at a home on Catalpa Loop Road near Lake Reba Monday afternoon. Kentucky State Police say Child Services removed a child from the home Tuesday before police say an active one-step “shake and bake” meth lab was discovered in the basement of the home Monday.

It all started when a Kentucky State trooper went to the home Monday to serve a warrant on previous drug trafficking charges. He got consent to search the house and said he found the meth lab, which police say was made earlier in the day. An investigator in a protective suit cleaned it up.

Three women who were in the home, including Carmela Gibson, were arrested Monday afternoon.

Fraud Investigation Phone Scams in Whitley County

The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department has received numerous complaints of phone calls determined to be scams.

In each case, a person received a phone call indicating he/she owed money for an outstanding speeding ticket. Other times, the scammer claims the person owes money on a loan that you may or may not have applied for. The scammer often threatens that if payment for the outstanding traffic citation or is not paid off, an arrest warrant for the person will be obtained.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Fines for traffic citations are not collected by a third party. In Kentucky, fines must be paid to the district / city clerk of the county or city where you received the citation.
If you owe money on a loan, the company through which you obtained the loan would file a civil action against you, after which you would be served with a civil summons.

If you receive any type of call that is questionable, ask for a callback number and do NOT give out any type of personal information, especially your Social Security Number or credit/debit card and bank account numbers.

The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department stresses that you should not give out any personal information by phone, especially if the call is unsolicited.

Arson Investigation Clark County Fire is Suspicious

Firefighters call a fire that destroyed a vacant Clark County home Sunday night suspicious.

A neighbor reported a blast from a home off White Turley Road, north of Winchester, around 9 p.m. When firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed and flames had spread into the yard. Firefighters cut off a line to a propane tank, but could do little else but contain the fire. The house burned to the ground.

Clark County Fire Department Battalion Chief William Puckett said neighbors told firefighters they saw the owner nearby before the explosion.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

“The property owner had left about 45 minutes prior to this, and he had been up here doing some stuff. He advised that he might have been burning a brush pile or something. It’s still under investigation at this time,” he said.

A fire investigator is expected to comb through the scene Monday.

Pedophile Tracking Ft. Campbell Soldier Sentenced

A former Fort Campbell, Kentucky soldier was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, by Senior Judge Thomas B. Russell today, for knowingly possessing, mailing, transporting, and shipping child pornography while residing within the Fort Campbell Military Reservation and during active duty in Iraq, announced David J. Hale, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.

Timothy Lee Hansen, age 25, pleaded guilty to a four-count federal indictment brought by a federal grand jury on August 17, 2011. Prior to his indictment, Hansen had been charged in a criminal complaint on July 19, 2011.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

According to court records, between February 2010 and February 15, 2011, Hansen, also known as “Hydes420,” used a “peer-to-peer” Internet file sharing software to download, store, and trade digital images of child pornography. A subpoena issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), tracked the IP address of the computer used to distribute child pornography to a computer belonging to Hansen and located in a soldier’s barracks at Fort Campbell. The information was turned over to the United States Army, Criminal Investigation Division (CID) at Fort Campbell on February 14, 2011.

Hansen was identified as an active-duty soldier assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group. According to the complaint, Hansen told investigators that he possessed approximately 100 megabytes of child pornography on his personal computers at Fort Campbell.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jo E. Lawless and was investigated by the FBI and United States Army CID.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and to identify and rescue victims. Arson Investigation 11 Yr Old Fort Myers Girl Arrested

NORTH FORT MYERS, FL –

An 11-year-old girl was arrested Saturday after allegedly setting fire to a house.

It happened at a home off Eloise Circle in North Fort Myers.

Marie Watson, the owner of the home where the fire allegedly started, says her neighbor alerted her.

That neighbor put out the fire on her doorstep.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

When she stepped outside she said she noticed burning newspaper around the area.

She says 11-year-old Aaliyah Foster started the fire.

“I was very scared since it was the second time in 2 months… less than 2 months, and it’s the same child both times. She was mad at me because I wouldn’t let my granddaughter play with her,” Watson said.

Foster was taken to the Lee County Juvenile Detention Center and later released.

We tried to talk to Foster’s family but they declined to go on camera.
