In one instance, the state even revoked the licenses of a man in December following an investigation that revealed he failed to submit a client’s annual annuity application and investment to the insurer. Instead, he deposited the client’s $30,000 check into his own personal bank account.

Taylor says that the Dept. of Insurance is working to increase awareness about the consequences of insurance fraud, while at the same time fighting the crime.

Identity Theft Alexandria, VA Man Charged

A former Lower Southampton man has been charged by federal officials with four counts of Social Security fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.

Ronnie Lee Durham, 50, of Alexandria, Va., used the Social Security number and date of birth of an individual residing in another state to open bank accounts, obtain a debit card and obtain employment, according to a press release from the United States Attorney’s office.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Durham, who also went by the names Ronnie Lee Johnson and R.P.J., obtained client information while working for a business based in Langhorne in March 2011, officials said. According to the United States Attorney’s office the Sterner Mill Road resident had access to private client files.

The identity of one victim, who lived in Mississippi and rented an apartment in Feasterville, was used to open bank and credit card accounts. Durham also used the person’s information to get a job with a Edison, New Jersey data management company, according to a federal indictment.

Authorities said Durham illegally used stolen social security information to open both checking and saving accounts at the First Federal of Bucks County bank in Langhorne Borough.

In 2012, Lower Southampton police were tipped off about alleged fraud by Durham’s 22-year-old son. The 50-year-old was arrested and charged by Bucks County officials with seven felonies.

Investigators found a slew of evidence during their late spring investigation, a previous Patch story states.

Washington Post reporter Tom Jackson wrote a detailed story on the case and talked to Durham’s ex-wife in July 2012. According to the story, Durham used Tom Jackson’s name and wrote fake news stories about his ex-wife’s lawyer, Robert Zaniel.

The case was investigated by Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, the Diplomatic Security Service and the Lower Southampton Police Department.

Special Assistant United States Attorney Amanda R. Reinitz is prosecuting the case.

Identity Theft Former CA State Assemblyman Faked Theft

A former California state assemblyman has pleaded guilty to making fake identity theft claims to avoid paying his debts.

City News Service reports 47-year-old Carl Washington entered his plea to bank fraud charges on Monday. He’s scheduled to be sentenced June 3.

At least three financial institutions lost nearly $200,000 as a result of the scheme prosecutors say Washington ran from February 2007 to August 2011.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Washington applied for credit cards and loans, racking up thousands of dollars in charges, and then falsely reported he’d been a victim of identity theft while working in Los Angeles County’s probation office.

The Democrat represented the 52nd district in South Los Angeles from 1996 to 2002.

He is on unpaid leave from his job as the probation department’s director for intergovernmental relations.

Pedophile Tracking Mom of Victim is Angry Offender ID is Hidden

A Level 2 sex offender charged with taking pornographic snapshots of a 6-year-old girl and sharing them online never told the child’s mother about his criminal history, according to the federal investigators — and the mom had no quick and easy way of finding out.

George Shipps, 31, of Chelsea is one of about 6,000 moderate-risk sex criminals who enjoy a state-sanctioned layer of identity protection. Unlike high-risk Level 3 offenders, whose names and addresses are available instantly online, Level 2 offenders’ whereabouts are available only through a formal written request to the state Sex Offenders Registry Board or the local police station where the cons register.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

The girl’s mother “was unaware of his status as a sex offender,” said FBI Special Agent Christopher Hughes, who investigated the case and testified yesterday at a hearing to show authorities had probable cause when they arrested Shipps last week.

“He indicated to her he had some minor brushes with the law,” such as driving with bad license plates, Hughes said.

What Shipps didn’t reveal, according to the feds, was his prior Middlesex County conviction for child-porn possession and enticing a minor. Shipps was on probation when FBI agents searched his home Feb. 19 and charged him with production of child pornography, prosecutors said in court yesterday.

The girl’s mother declined to comment yesterday. The Herald is withholding her relationship to Shipps to protect her daughter’s identity.

In a heartbreaking exchange recounted in court, Hughes said the little girl, while speaking to investigators, identified herself in the pictures and “asked the question if her mother would know” they’d been taken. She failed to identify Shipps as the person who took the photographs, he said, and when investigators asked her how he got them, she replied: “He must have made them up.” Such denial is common among young victims, he said.

Investigators say they came across Shipps while probing an international trail of child-porn trading on the Internet.

Private Investigation Mail Thefts on the Rise in Lexington

Get your mail today? If you aren’t getting your mail deliveries, it may have nothing to do with the Post Office. Authorities have been investigating a disturbing trend in Lexington involving thefts from your doorstep.

Who doesn’t look forward to coming home to a delivery on the front porch? But lately, some packages have been disappearing after they’re delivered.

“People ordered things, and they never turned up, and in some cases these items would turn up in pawn shops,” explains Sherelle Roberts, Lexington Police Department spokesperson.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

In our busy lives, thinking about our mail getting stolen may not cross our minds,

“I haven’t worried about it before. I thought about it,” says William Gates, who lives near Liberty Road, an area where many mail thefts have been reported.

But Lexington Police want you to be aware. On February 12th, Police arrested 24-year-old Allan Whitaker, 31-year-old Brian Ryder, and 25-year-old Eden Bishop for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of stolen packages in the Hartland neighborhood and neighborhoods near Hamburg.

“We saw a mix of parcels of all kinds being stolen,” says Roberts.

Even after the arrests, area post offices continue to get complaints that mail has been stolen.

“Just because we arrest one group of people responsible for doing something doesn’t mean there aren’t others out there doing it,” says Roberts.

So here are some tips: have a neighbor keep the delivery at their place, leave a note for the delivery person to put the mail in a secure place, or have the delivery made to your workplace if you will not be home to receive it.

“I’ve thought about having stuff sent [to work], because there the mailman delivers it right to us instead of here, where I may not be here,” says Gates.

Stealing mail is a federal offense, and postal inspectors can prosecute.

Wrongful Death Murder Suicide in Takoma Park, MD

The man who shot and killed a friend before shooting himself in Takoma Park early Sunday morning may have been suffering from severe trauma after serving in the Marines, police say.

Takoma Park Police investigators are still looking into exactly why David Draa, 30, shot and killed his friend, 30-year-old Steven “Kyle” Hickman, on Sunday, but officials believe that it may be connected to the trauma and other possible difficulties in his personal life.

Draa shot and killed Hickman in the driveway of a home in the 7300 block of Flower Avenue just before 1:45 a.m. Sunday. Police say Draa shot Hickman from behind, then knelt over his body and turned the gun on himself.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Police describe Draa and Hickman as good friends and colleagues at the school they worked. Hickman was often a “sounding board” for Draa as he helped him work through some personal issues, according to family members.

The shooting happened several hours after Hickman and Draa spent the day biking, during which Hickman got a flat tire. He then originally chose to stay over at Draa’s apartment, but at some point during the night, he changed his mind and decided to fix the tire and cycle home. Police believe Draa shot Hickman while he was working on the bike and that there was no physical or verbal altercation.

Detectives believe that one or both of the men drank alcohol that night, but they won’t be certain until toxicology reports come back on both men. Those results could take several weeks.

Pedophile Tracking Woman Sentenced to 15 Years in Utah

FARMINGTON — A judge on Monday blasted a woman who admitted to sexually abusing two children, calling her “a danger to society”

“I was so horrified by what one person would do to a child,” Judge Michael G. Allphin said at the sentencing hearing of Stanna Page Marlene Sulimowicz, 29.

Allphin sentenced Sulimowicz to serve up to 15 years in Utah State Prison.

Sulimowicz entered the guilty plea to one count of second-degree felony sexual abuse of a child in November. She was originally charged in May 2012 with two counts of object rape of a child and one count of sodomy upon a child.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

“What you did to those children sickened me,” Allphin said. “Tears came to my eyes when I read the report. How could anyone do this to any child, I don’t understand.”

Allphin said Sulimowicz’s actions were “depraved.”

According to the arrest warrant, Sulimowicz was living in a Kaysville home with “multiple children” and “engaged in sexual contact with the children.”

Prosecutors said two children, both younger than 8 years old, were victimized.

The children told investigators that Sulimowicz used vibrators or sex toys on them, according to the arrest warrant.

The abuse happened from September 2011 to October 2011.
