Missing Person Bo Hedberg of Georgetown

GEORGETOWN — More than a dozen local, state and environmental police were among those searching the Crane Pond Wildlife Management Area yesterday morning and afternoon for a 65-year-old man reported missing last Thursday.

Bo Hedberg of 103 Thurlow St. was reported missing by his wife, Gail Hedberg. Police Chief James Mulligan said police received the call around 6:30 p.m. saying he had left their house and had not returned. Police were able to track his last known location to the 2,100-acre area after accessing his cellphone.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“We’re looking for a missing person right now, that’s all we know. The only reason we’re going out there is that ping,” Mulligan said earlier.

After coordinating with other departments Sunday night, Georgetown police and others began their search around 10 a.m. yesterday. Rescue personnel were transported to the reservation area via a state police snow-track vehicle. The state police also dispatched two K-9 units to aid in the search.

Mulligan said search conditions were difficult, thanks to nearly 2 feet of snow that fell over the weekend and a biting rain that began pelting the region yesterday morning. Police suspended their search around 3 p.m. and went back to the station for a debriefing. The search will continue periodically, he said, until emergency units have exhausted all options.

“We’ve marked that area and will go back to that area as the weather improves. It’s very difficult, as you can image. Hopefully he’s someplace safe,” Mulligan said.

The Crane Pond area, which has a handful of nature trails meandering through a densely wooded terrain, is located in a remote corner of Georgetown straddling the Byfield/West Newbury border. It is one of the largest undeveloped tracts of land in the region. Much of it has been flooded in recent years by a steady return of beavers, and many parts of it are inaccessible due to wetlands.

About a dozen law enforcement vehicles were seen parked alongside Thurlow Street, a narrow secluded road that intersects North Street and connects with Byfield Road. Traffic has been reduced to one lane during the search.

The family has put together a Facebook page asking others to help them in the search at facebook.com/FindBoHedberg. Those with any information should call Georgetown police at 978-352-5700.

Private Investigator Lexington Man Indicted for Bank Robbery

LEXINGTON, KY—A Lexington man was indicted for allegedly robbing a bank in Fayette County in November of last year.

Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Perrye Turner, Special Agent in Charge, FBI; and Ronnie J. Bastin, Chief of Police for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, jointly made the announcement today.

A federal grand jury in Lexington returned the indictment February 7 charging 38-year-old William Abshear with one count of bank robbery.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

According to the indictment, Abshear used intimidation to take $1,500 from the Chase Bank on Winchester Road on November 26 of last year.

Court documents allege that Abshear passed a note to the teller demanding that she put money on the counter. After getting the money, Abshear allegedly fled the bank on foot. Lexington Police used surveillance photographs to identify Abshear as a suspect. He was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 20.

The investigation was conducted by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elisabeth Brown is prosecuting the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

A date for Abshear to appear in federal court in Lexington has not yet been set. If convicted, Abshear faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. However, any sentence following a conviction would be imposed after the Court considers the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statutes governing the imposition of sentences.

Pedophile Tracking Winston-Salem, NC Man Sentenced to 114 Years

A Winston-Salem man was sentenced to at least 114 years in prison after a Forsyth County jury convicted him of 11 counts of raping and sexually abusing a young girl.

Corey Lamont McClamb, 42, was convicted on two counts of statutory rape, three counts of felony child abuse by a sexual act, three counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor and three counts of statutory sex offense.

The jury was deadlocked on a third count of statutory rape, and Judge Christophe Bragg of Forsyth Superior Court declared a mistrial on that charge.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Bragg sentenced McClamb to 456 months to 557 months each on one count of statutory rape and two counts of statutory sex offense, and consolidated the remaining charges, giving McClamb a total sentence of 114 years to 139 years and three months.

The girl, now 17, testified during the trial that she and McClamb knew each other when they lived in a different state. She testified that the sexual abuse started when she was 8 and continued when they moved to Winston-Salem.

The alleged incidents that took place in Winston-Salem occurred from June 2009 until September 2010, when –– at age 15 –– she told a guidance counselor at her high school.

The Winston-Salem Journal does not typically identify the victims of sexual abuse or their families.

Assistant District Attorney Kia Chavious said that McClamb’s DNA was found on the girl’s comforter in her bedroom, where many of the alleged incidents took place, and that an examination at the hospital found evidence consistent with sexual abuse.

Chris Beechler, McClamb’s attorney, argued during the trial that the forensic evidence in the case was inconclusive.

McClamb has maintained his innocence. He testified that he did not rape the girl.

The verdicts in the case came after a trial that ended Thursday. The jury began deliberating at 4 p.m. Thursday and had requested transcripts from three of the witnesses on Friday. Bragg adjourned court Friday afternoon to allow the court reporter to prepare the transcripts for Monday morning.

By noon Monday, the jury was deadlocked 10 to 2 on three of the 12 counts. By 3:30 p.m., the jury had reached unanimous verdicts on 11 counts but remained hopelessly deadlocked on the remaining count. That’s when Bragg declared a mistrial on the one count of statutory rape.

Chavious said during sentencing that McClamb’s actions devastated the girl. She said the girl couldn’t even talk about the allegations when Chavious started working on the case two years ago. Chavious said McClamb used fear and intimidation to keep the girl from talking about the sexual abuse.

“These offenses are horrible,” Chavious said. “They were heinous.”

Pedophile Tracking Clarence, NY Man Pleads Guilty

A state traffic engineer from Clarence, once lauded as a community pillar, pleaded guilty today to several felony sex crimes against an underage girl that will lead to a 23-year prison sentence.

Craig E. Walek, 49, of Milton Road, admitted to two counts of use of a child in a sexual performance, second-degree criminal sexual act, and two counts of second-degree rape.

“These are all registrable sex offenses,” said prosecutor Lynette M. Reda of the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Walek had faced 45 charges after his arrest in December, including nine counts of use of a child in a sexual performance.

Walek was arrested just a month after the Public Employees Federation profiled him in its union publication as someone “who gives back to the community.”

“He is a single dad, raising a son … and working another job to keep quality in his home life,” according to the November story in the PEF’s Communicator magazine. “He is the opposite of how the press portrays state workers, and is the real deal. Craig is just one example among the thousands of PEF members who are responsible and hardworking.”

Walek has been held in lieu of $1 million bail since his arrest by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

At the time of his arrest, Sheriff Timothy Howard said Walek was engaged in “ongoing repeated sexual abuse” of the victim.

The crimes to which Walek pleaded guilty happened between August 2006 and October 2007, when the girl was as young as 14 years old.

The victim, by law, was unable to consent to sexual intercourse because of her young age, Reda said in court.

The charges included Walek’s use of a video recorder involving the victim, under 17 at the time, engaged in a sexual performance.

Walek’s sentencing is scheduled for April 29.

State Supreme Court Justice Penny M. Wolfgang cited an agreement between defense lawyer John R. Nuchereno and the prosecution, reached during plea negotiations, for a 23-year prison sentence.

“The court intends to sentence the defendant exactly as the district attorney and the defense attorney have stated,” Wolfgang said.

Walek, a senior engineering technician in the Western New York region of the state Department of Transportation, was a local leader in the union representing professional state transportation workers.

Wolfgang said his bail amount will continue to be $1 million, and he remains in custody.

“We remain shocked and saddened by the news of the charges brought against Craig Walek,” PEF spokeswoman Jane Briggs recently told the Albany Times Union. “The health and safety of our children is always of the utmost importance to us.”

The union publication noted that Walek had served as president of St. John’s Buffalo Federal Credit Union and was on the board of directors of the Matthew Foster Foundation, an organization that assists families who have children with cancer.

The article described Walek as a single father of a middle school-age son.

When he was working, he and other three other DOT employees oversaw the traffic operations center in Buffalo, monitoring rush-hour traffic in the mornings and evenings. Walek also investigated intersections to see which ones need a traffic signal and responded to requests from residents or local legislators.
