Accident Reconstruction Father and 2 Sons Taken to UK Hospital

An SUV collided with two tractor trailers Sunday morning on I-64. Four people were hospitalized, including a father and his two sons.

Jeffrey Branch of Louisville is recovering at UK Hospital Sunday evening, police say, he and his family are lucky to be alive.

A Ford Edge collided with two trailer trailers just after midnight. “The family in the Ford Edge was a father and two sons they were coming back from a state wrestling tournament on their way back to Louisville when this collision happened,” says Sheriff Pat Melton.

Jeffrey Branch was behind the wheel, according to the Sheriff. For some reason, he accidentally drove into the back of the truck. “After hitting that tractor trailer, it cut across the median, and caused a second collision with another tractor trailer that hit virtually head-on,” says Sheriff Melton.

Branch had to be cut from his SUV and flown to UK Hospital. His two sons, Jared and Derek, were not as badly injured and were taken to the Frankfort Regional Medical Center. As was the driver of the second tractor-trailer struck. The sheriff credits that driver, from Pennsylvania, for keeping the semi upright. “He said all of the sudden the vehicle was coming with no headlights and come across and hit him and looks like he just jerked to the right. He’s real lucky he didn’t turn it over he did a really good job,” says Sheriff Melton.

About 75 yards of debris littered the interstate after all of this. The Franklin County County Sheriff’s office and Frankfort Police shut down the interstate while they reconstructed the crash.

At last check, Branch’s condition at UK Hospital was listed as serious.

Identity Theft Colorado Statewide Identity Theft Probe

Parker police are investigating an identity theft case that began with the Thelma & Louise-style pursuit of two female suspects.

The incident began around 6 a.m., Jan. 18, with an alert to be on the lookout for a Dodge truck stolen out of Castle Rock, said Parker Detective Penny VanDenBerg. Within minutes of the BOLO alert, officers spotted the Dodge being tailed by a Ford Expedition and launched a chase near Crowfoot Valley and Stroh roads.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Officers called off the pursuit when the Ford crashed into an unattended parked car near Main Street and Dransfeldt. The driver of the Ford, Amber Garcia, 22, of Denver, attempted to escape on foot and was apprehended by police. Investigators later found the Ford was reported stolen out of Commerce City.

The unidentified woman who was driving the Dodge eluded capture, VanDenBerg said. Aurora police found the Dodge about two-and-a-half hours later, abandoned in Aurora.

A search warrant for the Ford disclosed thousands of pieces of mail and financial documents, credit card information and prescription medications strewn on the floorboards, backseat and in backpacks.

Investigators also found vehicle registrations and documents that indicated the suspects broke into cars throughout the metro area, VanDenBerg said.

Personal information recovered points to victims from Castle Rock, Denver, Westminster, Aurora, Evans, Alamosa, Greeley, Colorado Springs and Villa Grove, VanDenBerg said.

Police also found handwritten notes with credit card information for individuals from Kansas, Illinois and Iowa, she said. The alleged identity theft ring could continue to grow as investigators sift through thousands of documents, VanDenBerg said.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” she said. “Unfortunately we deal with identity theft more frequently than not. But something that starts out with stolen vehicles and turns out to be this, there’s definitely more out there that we need to investigate.”

VanDenBerg contacted individuals whose prescription medications were recovered and those who appear to be missing a substantial amount of mail. The investigation indicates the prescription medications were sent by mail, VanDenBerg said.

The mail from Castle Rock was for residences on Wolfensberger Road and in The Meadows on Soaring Eagle Lane, Kellwood Drive, Faver Drive, Foothills Drive, Scarlet Oak Court and Broadview Place, VanDenBerg said.

In Denver, mail was recovered for residences on Zuni, Halifax Court, Flamingo Way and King Street, she said.

Garcia is in custody facing charges of felony charges of aggravated motor vehicle theft, theft by receiving, vehicular eluding and conspiracy. Misdemeanor charges include reckless endangerment, reckless driving, obstructing a peace officer, striking an unattended vehicle and failure to report an accident. As of Feb. 1 she remained in custody in the Douglas County detention facility on $11,500 bond, said Cocha Heyden, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

Authorities continue to search for the second suspect, VanDenBerg said.

“We probably have to get in touch with at least 50 potential victims,” she said. “We are just in the beginning stages of the investigation, there could definitely be more. The next step will be meeting with the U.S. postal inspector. The (alleged) mail theft makes this case a federal offense.”

Anyone with information that could assist in the investigation can call VanDenBerg at 303-805-6560 or email her at pvandenberg@parkeronline.org.

Identity Theft 6 Face Charges of Tax Fraud

Six Jackson residents schemed to steal Social Security numbers and birth dates of current and former inmates at the state prison in Rankin County to file false tax returns and pocket thousands of dollars in refunds, federal prosecutors say.

Charged in a 42-count indictment with conspiracy to commit identity theft and tax fraud over a four-year period are Ladonna Cooper, 30; Marietta Harris, 37; Tony Jones, 30; Nikki Thomas, 37; S’Ade Tyler, 27; and Shekeila Jones, 26.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

All but Jones were arrested following their indictment filed Jan 24 at U.S. District Court in Jackson and are free on $10,000 bond each, said Sheila Wilbanks, secretary to U.S. Attorney Gregory Davis. Those five were arraigned Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Ball. They are set for trial April 8 before U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate.

Jones was arrested Thursday, Wilbanks said.

According to the indictment, the defendants “were involved in a conspiracy to illegally obtain the names and Social Security numbers of others which they then used to file fraudulent federal tax returns for the purpose of obtaining fraudulent refunds,” the U.S. attorney’s office said in a news release.

“Identity theft is a serious crime that victimizes honest taxpayers and causes immense hardship,” Damon Rowe, acting special agent in charge of the Internal Revenue Service criminal investigation, said in the release.

The investigation “should serve as a warning that we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners and the U.S. attorney’s office to hold accountable those individuals who undermine our income tax system by filing false claims for refunds,” Rowe said in the release.

According to the indictment, Cooper was working at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in January 2009 and had access to its computer system. That prison houses mostly female inmates.

The computer system contained not just Social Security numbers and dates of birth for current and former prisoners there, but the same information for current and former visitors, the indictment said.

The six used that information, plus similar information gleaned from medical records, to file fictitious federal income tax returns so they could receive fraudulent tax refunds, the indictment alleges. The six agreed the funds would be electronically deposited in accounts at local banks, including BankPlus, Wachovia, Bank of America and Regions, prosecutors say.

The amounts varied, but some were extremely similar. For example, three deposits on the same day in July 2010 at BankPlus were for $1,495, $1,496 and $1,497, the indictment says. The highest amount deposited appeared to be $1,539, in February 2011 at Bank of America, according to the indictment.

The total amount of deposited tax return money listed in the indictment is about $32,000, but that number could grow because the investigation is ongoing, federal officials say.

Federal officials say they can’t divulge how they became aware of the fraud or whether the victims know their identities were stolen. They said they can’t divulge if Cooper was the only one of those indicted who worked at the prison or if Cooper is still employed there.

Federal officials also say they can’t divulge whether the fraudulently obtained tax refunds were electronically deposited into the defendants’ existing accounts or if the defendants created new accounts just for that money.

In the indictment, prosecutors ask for the forfeiture and seizure of any property derived from proceeds traced to the fraudulently obtained tax refunds.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigations with assistance from the Mississippi attorney general’s office, the Mississippi Department of Corrections and the Mississippi Department of Revenue.
