Pedophile Tracking FL Mom Pleads Guilty

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — A 36-year-old Jacksonville Beach woman faces up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to four counts of child neglect.

Authorities say Dalina Nicholas repeatedly allowed her 6-year-old daughter to be sexually abused in exchange for drugs and money. The Florida Times-Union ( http://bit.ly/Wh8sdH) reports Nicholas agreed to testify against four other people charged in the case. She won’t be sentenced until those trials conclude.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

In March 2012 a homeless man flagged down a police officer and told him a child was being molested in a nearby home. The man said he’d been to the home before to use drugs and had seen several men having sex with the child.

Nicholas’ attorney says his client doesn’t understand the girl was being abused because of drug and mental health issues.

Pedophile Tracking Philadelphia Priest and Lay Teacher Convicted

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The verdict is guilty for a 66-year-old priest and a 49-year-old former Catholic school lay teacher in the sexual molestation of a then 10-year-old altar boy at St. Jerome’s Parish back in 1998 and 1999.

Both men were led from the courtroom at the Criminal Justice Center and taken into custody. They will be sentenced March 18th, 2013.

The trial of Father Charles Engelhardt, an oblate of St. Francis DeSales, and Bernard Shero culminated a two year legal process that began with a 2011 grand jury report detailing abuse of children at the hands of priests and a cover-up by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

This case turned on the story of one victim, now 24 years of age, who testified that in 2009, he reported being abused as a child to the Archdiocese. The victim, known as “Billy Doe,” said he was passed from one priest to another and then to a lay teacher in what District Attorney Seth Williams called “heinous crimes.”

“The victim in this case has shown exceptional courage,” said District Attorney Seth Williams. “Not only did he have the strength to report his abuse, he had the tenacity to look his abusers in the eye and testify in front of complete strangers about the horrific details of his attacks. I hope this verdict will help him to continue with the long journey of healing that comes after such trauma. This is an important day for all institutional abuse victims. It is not an easy thing to overcome decades of cover-up and a culture of silence. This verdict will help put an end to the blind eye and the deaf ear with which so many victims of abuse have been received.”

A jury of eight men and four women found Shero guilty of Rape, Attempted Rape, Involuntary Deviant Sexual Intercourse, Indecent Sexual Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child (EWOC), and Corruption of a Minor charges for the sexual assault of the student.

Engelhardt was convicted of Indecent Assault, EWOC, Corruption of a Minor and Conspiracy charges for the sexual assault of the same student. The jury was deadlocked on a five charge of Involuntary Deviant Sexual Intercourse. Engelhardt had been a priest at the parish when the boy was assaulted.

Shero, who was a parochial teacher at the parish’s school, assaulted the same boy in 2000.

The now de-frocked priest Edward Avery, who was a priest at the parish, pleaded guilty last year to assaulting the same boy between 1998 and 1999. Avery is currently serving a 2 ½ to 5 year prison sentence for his crimes.

Shero’s defense attorney, Burton Rose, described his client as “very distraught.”

Once the guilty verdict was announced, you could hear the sobs, rising up from Shero’s family.

“I was very disappointed,” said Rose. “I thought the evidence of my client was extremely strong and there was a lot of reasonable doubt. [Bernard Shero] is a soft and mild mannered man. He has a lot of integrity that didn’t indicate in any way that he could ever be the kind of person described by the complainant. Far from it.”

Rose intends to appeal the conviction to the Superior Court after sentencing in March.

Engelhardt’s attorney, Michael McGovern, was not available for comment.

The guilty verdicts open the door wider to civil action against the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. One of victim’s civil attorneys intends to look more closely at the hierarchy of the Archdiocese at the time of the assaults. Paul Lauricella intends to investigate the role of two high ranking bishops now assigned outside the Archdiocese, who may have known that children were being put in harm’s way by predator priests.

In the landmark, three month trial of Monsignor William Lynn , the former secretary of the clergy whose job it was to investigate allegations of abuse by priests and then, to manage the status of their ministry, was convicted in June of endangering children and putting them in harm’s way by keeping predator priests in parishes.

Lynn reported to those bishops, who in turn reported to the late Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua. None of those clerics was indicted. Lynn now is serving three to six years in prison.

Engelhardt faces a maximum sentence of 37 years in prison, and Shero faces a maximum of 57 years.

Missing Person Sarah Majoras of Lambertville, NJ

The search continues for Sarah Majoras, the Lambertville woman, who vanished into thin air while returning home after a night out with friends four days ago.

Many residents of Lambertville say they are shocked this kind of thing could happen where they live.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“It is very unusual,” said one resident. “It’s a safe little town and it’s very much a community, and everybody pulls together. It’s just been a nightmare, it’s been horrible…We pull together as a community, everybody does everything with each other – between sports to skate night at the church – everybody pretty much knows everybody, and it’s just horrible to think that …people leave their doors unlocked, people all trust each other and there’s no crime that goes on that much here.”

Another woman said, “It’s a little weird – it’s a little weird that we haven’t found anything – that’s the weirdest part – that there’s no clues, there’s no nothing…Everybody knows her, she’s friendly, she’s a well known face and it’s really bizarre that she kind of just up and vanished.”

“Sarah Had No Enemies” Resident Says

A man standing nearby pointed out, “You have little car break-ins or this and that, but nothing like this – nothing like this at all, and we’ve all known Sarah for years. You’re not going to find a better person – everybody loves Sarah, I mean Sarah had no enemies, I’ve known Sarah for 20 years and I couldn’t find one person who could say something bad about her. She’s just a great person, I hope we find her.”

Another person said, “The only thing that really happens in that case is accidents on the river, if someone’s on a boat or something like that, for someone to go missing is totally unusual…it’s unsettling and shocking.”

“Disturbing, I guess, would be a good word,” said another resident. “It’s kind of eerie that something like that could happen in a town like this…People don’t lock their doors and generally friendly around here, but it’s just very shocking that something like that could happen around here.”

Identity Theft Roanoke, VA Husband and WIfe Sentenced

ROANOKE, VA —

A local husband and wife who admitted to committing fraud and stealing the identities of others were sentenced today in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke.

Michelle A. Ferguson and William J. Ferguson Jr., both of Roanoke, Va., each previously pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit fraud. In addition, Michelle Ferguson pled guilty to one count of aggravated identity theft. Today in District Court, Michelle Ferguson was sentenced to a total of 29 months in Federal prison. William Ferguson was sentenced to a total of 14 months in Federal prison.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

“Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson lied to their clients and used the stolen the identities of innocent people for their own financial gain.,” United States Attorney Timothy J. Heaphy said today. “They abused their positions as tax preparers for their own selfish greed.”

“Return preparer fraud and identity theft is a blight against our nation’s communities and threatens the veracity of our tax system,” said Sheila Olander, Acting Special Agent in Charge, IRS Criminal Investigation, Washington DC Field Office. “The Ferguson’s had a duty to their clients to protect their personal identifying information and to comply with the tax law. Today’s sentence serves as a reminder that all tax professionals have to respect the law and safe guard the financial interests of their clients’ and the taxpaying public.”

According to evidence presented at various hearing by Assistant United States Attorney C. Patrick Hogeboom III, the Fergusons operated a tax return preparation business out of their Roanoke home and committed fraud in two specific manners.

When meeting with clients face-to-face to prepare their taxes, the Fergusons would have their clients sign the return without reviewing its contents. The returns were set-up to have any refunds deposited directly into an account controlled by the defendants. To maximum refunds, Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson, without the knowledge of their clients, would include phony Schedule C’s, Profit and Loss from Business to the returns. The Schedule C’s would overstate income and deductions in order to maximize the amount of the false claim for refund. Once the tax refund was received by the defendants, they would write a check to each client for a fraction of the total refund received.

In addition, the defendants filed false tax returns using Social Security Numbers which had been stolen. Again, to maximize refunds, the defendants included phony Schedule C Businesses on the returns. However, the individuals who had their identity stolen did not receive any portion of the criminal proceeds obtained through the false claim for refund.

The investigation of the case was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney C. Patrick Hogeboom prosecuted the case for the United States.

Identity Theft 32 Yr Old Atlanta Woman Arrested in Scheme

A 32-year-old Atlanta woman arrested Monday in Oconee County is the subject of a widening investigation into a massive identity theft probe that authorities said involves three states and likely will grow.

“We’ve got 12 identity theft-related charges, but it will be bigger than that,” Oconee County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Lee Weems said Tuesday. “We’re still contacting victims and there will be multiple states.”

Angela Davida Miller of Madison Drive, Atlanta, remains in the county jail without bond.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

The case already extends outside Georgia to Alabama and Tennessee, Weems said, adding that other agencies are being made aware of the investigation.

The arrest of Miller occurred about 11:30 a.m. Monday on Georgia Highway 316 when sheriff’s Cpl. Clark Sparrow and Deputy Kendall White were testing a tag reader system, in which a camera set up with a scanner system photographs tags of passing cars and runs the numbers through a database to find such violations as suspended registration and uninsured vehicles, according to Weems.

The system is one of several being tested in anticipation of equipping patrol units with the devices, Weems said.

The deputies received an alert on the vehicle driven by Miller, and after having the information verified through dispatch, a traffic stop was made near Virgil Langford Road, Weems said.

“The woman was exceedingly nervous … beyond the level of what someone normally is on a traffic stop,” he said. “She gave some conflicting answers to things they asked. She told them she was in the Army, but when they asked her some military questions she didn’t know the answers.”

Miller was arrested on charges of having a suspended license and suspended vehicle. The vehicle was later searched and officers located numerous financial documents, a printer, voided checks, computer equipment, and mail that contained information on other people, according to the sheriff’s report.

Some of the documents were found in a hidden compartment in the vehicle, Weems said.

After the case was turned over to an investigator, 12 warrants charging her with identity fraud were obtained. Weems said he had no information on whether these victims had a financial loss as a result of the suspect possessing their personal information, but this is being investigated.

The 12 charges “are just a drop in the bucket,” he said.

While Miller was expected to have a bond hearing late Tuesday, Weems said he considered Miller a flight risk.

“I’m wondering if she might have some fraudulent identification for herself stashed somewhere,” he said.
