Electronic Surveillance Contractor Catches Thieves Stealing Equipment

A local contractor said a self-installed surveillance camera caught a team of thieves stealing $11,000 in equipment.

The owner of a Butler County construction company said anytime he does home renovations, he installs cameras as a security precaution.

Carl Leicher said he recently installed a camera at a home on Dutchtown Road in Penn Township, which later caught a man and woman taking brand-new windows and expensive equipment from the site.

“Quite frankly, at this point, I just want justice. My pound of flesh or whatever you want to call it. I just want to know that they’re not going to do it to anybody else,” Leicher said.

Leicher said the couple started loading stolen items at 2 a.m. and came back twice to reload more items into their vehicle.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Private Investigator Man in Jail After Firing Shot at a Lexington Officer

A fight between a man and his son led to a shot fired at a Lexington police officer. It happened just before 11:00 am on Woodside Circle.

On a freezing cold Tuesday in January, police officers responded to a domestic dispute at a brick house in a quiet cul-de-sac. It quickly escalated into something terrifying for those officers and the people outside.

“I heard the gun go off, and I was ready to jump out of the truck to make sure I didn’t get shot,” says David Prewitt.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

Prewitt was on the job this morning, picking up garbage on his route, when he saw the events that led to a man shooting at a police officer.

“I seen a guy get a rifle out of the back of his truck, and went up through the house and he was talking to a guy on the porch. I just thought they were talking, and then next thing I know the police pulled in,” recalls Prewitt.

Lexington Police say their officers were responding to a domestic violence complaint from the house, involving a fight between the man who lives there and his son, Phillip Preston Resmondo, 24, who LEX18 is told goes by Preston. When the first officer arrived, Resmondo allegedly lashed out.

“The suspect did discharge the firearm in the direction of officers as they did arrive,” says Commander Ken Armstrong with Lexington Police.

“The father grabbed his son and threw the rifle out in the yard and wrestled him down, and that’s when the officer came over and got on top of him,” says Prewitt.

As the father tackled his son to get the gun away, police deployed a taser on Resmondo, and he didn’t resist anymore.

“It’s a bad situation, but it turned out as well as it could considering the circumstances,” says Commander Armstrong.

Resmondo faces serious charges including Attempted Murder, two counts of Wanton Endangerment, two counts of Assault 3rd degree, and one count of resisting arrest. He is lodged at the Fayette County Detention Center.

Insurance Fraud Florida Leads in Fraud

Jan. 22 (Bloomberg) — Florida leads the U.S. in insurance fraud fueled by scam artists in Miami and Tampa who smash and crash cars to generate claims, an industry group said.

Florida, the fourth most-populous state, reported 3,530 questionable claims from Jan. 1, 2008, through June 30, 2012, the National Insurance Crime Bureau said today in a statement. The bureau reported on cases tied to organized groups, or crime rings, that repeatedly generate fake claims.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Criminals who intentionally damage property and then file claims collect millions of dollars each year through insurance fraud, according to the report. Claims tied to personal automobile policies accounted for more than 10,000 of the 13,014 questionable claims nationwide.

“Most often, it’s either real accidents with phony injuries sustained by a number of people who are part of the scam, or it’s completely phony, paper accidents, where everything is a scam,” said Frank Scafidi, a spokesman at the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

California followed Florida with 2,679 claims, and Michigan came in third with 1,080. Los Angeles and New York topped the list of U.S. cities with the most attempts at insurance fraud, followed by Miami, Detroit and Tampa.

“It is easier for people involved in scams like this if there is a huge immigrant population” because newcomers to the U.S. may not understand the insurance process and are easier to exploit, Scafidi said. “We find that in Florida, we find that in New York, we find that in Los Angeles.

Total questionable claim referrals in the U.S. grew 47 percent, according to the report. The number of fraudulent claims filed may continue to grow, the report projects.
